The Longman Communication 3000 is a list of the 3000 most frequent words in both spoken and written English, based on statistical analysis of the 390 million words contained in the Longman Corpus Network – a group of corpuses or databases of authentic English language. The Longman Communication 3000 represents the core of the English language and shows students of English which words are the most important for them to learn and study in order to communicate effectively in both speech and writing. The Fry Sight-Word Inventory is an informal, criterion-referenced screener which measures high-frequency word achievement. Fry 's Instant Words have been determined as the most common words used in English ranked in order of frequency. Specifically, Fry found that twenty-five words make up approximately a third of all items published, one-hundred words comprise almost half of all of the words found in publications, and three-hundred words make up approximately sixty-five percent of all written material. The first three-hundred words on Fry’s list should be mastered by the end of corresponding grade levels, and lists four through ten should be mastered between fourth and fifth grades. Each hundred words are broken down even further into twenty-five words per list, according to difficulty and frequency, and should be assessed sequentially. The goal of progress monitoring high-frequency word mastery is to increase fluency on high-frequency words in order to further automaticity within our students’ reading, which ultimately impacts overall comprehension.

Fredrick Douglass, an author who escaped slavery and spoke upon his hardships, clearly presents strong rhetorical devices within the feelings he has. Allowing him to express the feelings to the readers as a real world experience. Kendrick Douglass skillfully used syntax and figure of speech to convey the struggles and hardships of his journey. Douglass tells his story of how he felt lonely and how he felt like a prey. He uses syntax to create meaning to the words he is trying to convey.
Two men, one goal, survival. Life and death situations. No one has ever thought that they would be put in this situation, but these two men were. Yes the stories are fictional, but they feel too surreal. These two men, Will Kane and Sanger Rainsford are very similar, but put into two totally different situations. Life can change you, and these stories truly resemble that. High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game are very similar, yet at the same time dramatically different.
While hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy and Empire are both extremely popular, they differ greatly in the language used. In order to complete this project, I took linguistic concepts I had learned about in the text such as grammar, context, and communicative competence and applied them to the language usage in these TV series.
In regard to their language proficiency, as a whole, this wave demonstrated solid communicative skills with only minor mistakes in grammar and vocabulary usage, as well as a generally accurate sound production. In the article, Big Words Are Fading, But Many People Still Love Them, the syntax and diction indicate a bias in favor of big words. Bernstein shows a bias towards big word users through her depictions of people who don't like large vocabularies, through Mr. Bonneman’s girlfriend, and his interview.
I would like to attend Panther Camp because I am a transfer student who is looking forward to making lasting friendships with my fellow peers. The transfer process has been a long and tough journey for me and I would like a chance to connect with other students who are going through the same thing. The virtual orientation has made me excited to attend Panther Camp because of how the campers talk about the amazing experiences they had while on their retreat. I would like to have those awesome memories as well!
First of all, most people can no longer able to hold a conversation without looking at their phone every few minutes. Our ability to conversant is dwindling due to text lingo. As Nicholas Carr, said 1“Just as there’s a tendency to glorify technological progress, there’s a countertendency to expect the worst of every new tool or machine”. As I was walking through the mall one day I overheard a group of teen girls talking and every few words was either “omg”, “like” or “seriously”. Nowadays, when writing to friends common words are often shortened to save time, but what most people do not realize, is that people develop habits and after so many uses of text lingo the actual way to spell the word goes away.
The result verified that there is evidence of a decline in grammar scores based on the number of abbreviations in their sent and received text messages (Swayne and Messer). In other words, the word abbreviations and punctuation short-cuts that famously used in text messaging can alter individuals’ ability to recognize and apply proper spelling, grammar and punctuation techniques in writing and daily life communication. If the uses of abbreviations are not controlled from the beginning, both sender and receiver of text messaging will be associated with how poorly they will perform on the test based on the level of standard literacy they have.
Increasing the number of words isn’t enough because the speech recognition system is unable to differentiate words like ‘to’ and ‘two’ or ‘right’ and ‘write’ (6 ,p.98).

Texting is a fairly new form of communication that has taken the world by storm. It became popular around 2001, and originally had its limitations, such as the 160-character limit. But now that technology has advanced, texting has followed along and is now a convenient, casual, and a more immediate way of communicating. So naturally, texting has evolved also in terms of the language used within it. We see this mostly in the form of abbreviations and short hand spelled words. Some people argue that texting has ruined the English language. Studies and observations have shown that the benefits of texting and cyber speak are much more broad then expected. Textisms have been shown to increase phonology skills, brain activity, creativity and provide a relatable outlet for students in education.
