Some might claim the YA genre has grown to be too dark for its target audience. Meghan Gurdon, a firm believer of this idea, explains why she believes this in her article, “Darkness Too Visible”. Gurdon describes the experience of a mother of three in a bookstore looking to purchase a YA novel for one of her children, when she found herself leaving the bookstore empty-handed due to the content of the teen books. While teen books decades ago contained less violent/corrupted material, times have changed along with the genre. She is concerned that these books could have an effect on these young readers’ brains as they are merely transferring from childhood to adulthood. Gurdon still has faith that YA books would sell just as well and connect with young readers today without all of the dark subject matters discussed in them these days.

Dark themes are on the rise in young adult literature, and parents can’t help but wonder if this is due to the abundance of these subjects in adult literature. Literary critic Meghan Cox Gurdon’s editorial “Darkness Too Visible” and author Sherman Alexie’s response “Why the Best Kids Books are Written in Blood” have contrasting views on this subject. However, with the superior techniques Alexie Sherman is more effective. Both authors use themes and style in their writing, but with his superior use of persuasive techniques Alexie Sherman’s article is ultimately more effective.

Although books full of words are more efficient in delivering and describing what the author feels, sometimes pictures can give a deep meaning depending on how they are organized. The Veil by Marjane Satrapi’s is a graphic novel that’s organized in a particular way, to deliver a certain message through the pictures. Marjane includes different sizes and frames that serve what she is thinking and feeling. Choosing certain sizes, frames and colours isn’t arbitrary. As each box increases in size, it means that she wants to emphasize the message behind that box, or show her relation to that particular text. Initially, the cover and title page of the book both play a key role in the layout of the story. On the cover, the artistic style of the illustration looks like a cartoon and a painting. This style is very realistic because of the situation portrayed on the cover; yet playful at the same time because of its comical vibe. The cover also looks three-dimensional and the author seems to be using a straightforward perspective of art. This idea is led be true because the child, wall, and table with the fishbowl are all facing towards the reader. The title is also as large in font as the child and fish bowl are. This shows that the cover is relatively proportional in both text and pictures.

The author shows the readers that today so-called cozy mysteries has no big difference from Golden Age style mystery writing. The story occurs mainly in a small setting, such as part of a closed group, in a manor or a small village. Christie’s works still influence the readers: They still love to read Agatha Christie’s novels today.

When I took off the top to that white box on that calm Sunday night, I was instantly transported into this astounding library, that seemed to come out of a movie scene, rows upon rows were piled up with Verne’s, Dumas’, Stevenson’s, and Melville’s. Each week I would open this box and choose a new book. It wasn’t long until weeks turned to days, and I began to greedily treasure my Stevenson’s, truly value friendship with Dumas, prepare for an adrenaline rush with Verne, but most importantly, it was my single Melville that brought me the pinnacle of happiness.

Barker creates suspense using illustrations by making you wonder and then build suspense by making you pay attention to the book. Barker makes you wonder and wait about Marr. This illustration is a person who is disappearing and melting onto the floor into nothingness when Harvey was letting Mrs.Griffin out of the wood box.

Bernard Curtis Brown II was an eleven year old ambitious science fair winner. Often said to be witty and joyful, but also studious, was unfortunately killed while on American Airlines Flight 77. He was on his way to a Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary located on the coast of California with two other science fair winners. The project was sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Brown wanted to be a basketball player. He was seen frequently waking up early in the morning to go shoot hoops, occasionally playing with the neighborhood kids, his father, mother, or sister. The eleven year old also enjoyed school. Described by his mother always waking up with boasts of energy and his teachers saying how much of an enjoyable presence Brown was.

The illustrations should help readers anticipate the unfolding of a story’s action and its climax.

Last season on Sister Wives, Meri Brown revealed that she had been catfished. Meri was talking to what she thought was a man and they were having a very intimate emotional relationship. Meri Brown later found out that it was a woman named Jackie Overton that was messaging her. Radar Online shared that Jackie has put out a book all about their relationship and things that she found out during this time. Of course, Jackie still isn't admitting to being Jackie and says that she is a man named Sam Cooper. Meri Brown has never acted like she actually met with the man, even though the book tells another confusing story.

Other authors have jumped on the bandwagon writing novels on Christian topics or treasure hunts or simply discussing The Da Vinci Code. Even the film industry has profited by using Brown’s strategies (and topics) in the successful movie National Treasure and by taking advantage of the Grail publicity in TV productions like The Blood of the (Knights) Templar. But which strategies does Brown use to make the reader enjoy reading The Da Vinci Code? In my essay, I would like to focus on his use of narrative techniques.
