There are many valid opinions towards voting at the age of sixteen. Many believe the voting age should be decreased due to other responsibilities in which many sixteen-year-olds already have, such as being able to drive or being employed. However, some may be against this issue due to the influences a 16 year may encounter when voting, such as voting for who their parents or friends vote for or lacking maturity. The articles portray the benefits to allowing sixteen-year-olds to vote. One of the advantages of the voting age decreasing is the increase in votes which would have a huge impact on the voting system: not only will it show how more citizens are getting involved but how younger people are paying attention and are familiarising
If the government allowed sixteen-year-olds to vote, they would build in them the habit of going out in elections at a young age. Eventually, that will result in increasing the overall voter turnout as the population ages. Middle adolescents would go out and practise their right out of habit. Consequently, the country will be more democratic. Moreover, politicians will care more about middle adolescents knowing that their voices count. Therefore, better services and advanced programs as well as critical wise decisions will take place creating a better environment for them. Overall, getting sixteen-year-olds into the habit of voting will definitely turn the table.
In the article, “Takoma Park 16-year-old savors his history making moment at the polls”, by Annys Shin, it is said that Ben Miller a 16-year-old boy walked into the toll booth at Takoma Park Community Center and was planned to do something about the fact that 16-year-olds cannot vote in the election. This brings up an interesting argument of whether or not 16 and 17-year-olds should be allowed to vote. People will argue that 16 and 17-year-olds do not know what they are doing or just have a lack of interest and that is a reason why some say no to letting them vote but others say that it could mean the difference in the election.
In my position I agree to lower the age of voting to 16-17 years old because it can raise up the percentage of voting. Many people are not voting because they don't believe it can help them and their community also with the support from 16-17 years old, it can show a huge difference on how the votes are increasing little by little. Also it can gives them experience on what's the voting like. Once they get older, they will know what to do because they registered the vote in an
By allowing 16 years old to vote, it could make them more interested in politics. Before voting, they will want to investigate about each party and the policies they have. Which in turn could will make them more interested in politics. There is an urgent need for younger people to get involved in politics and by lowering the voting age this could create a new wave of politicians. By allowing 16 years old to vote, schools will have to teach politics in school and go into greater depth about politics.
Lowering the voting age would increase youth political participation for many reasons, making it the best course of action to solve our problem. First of all, when people are first able to vote, many people are moving away from home and “they do not see [voting] as a priority” (B.Gallagher, personal communication, April 15, 2016). Lowering the voting age
The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1969 during the Vietnam war, because it was only fair to those aged 18 - 20 dying for their country have a say in how the country is run. Therefore if 16 year olds are now capable of
Twenty-one year olds are mature enough to make important decisions such as voting. Most countries around the world have established a voting age. Voting is a topic of heated debate in the United States due to difference of opinions between the democrat and republican parties. In the United States the voting age has been reduced from twenty-one years old to eighteen years old. Even though the voting age was reduced, some people have been lobbying in order to reduce the voting age to sixteen. Reducing the legal age for voting is a bad idea, because the younger generation lacks the capability of having an informed decision for voting. Although some people believed that the legal voting age should be lower than eighteen, on the other hand others believe it should be returned to twenty-one. The legal voting age should be returned to twenty-one because the majority of people over twenty-one are more educated about politics than an eighteen year old. People who are over twenty-one are not easily influenced by people’s opinions and are more capable of evaluating future outcomes.
The idea that 16 year-olds should vote has been discussed and freshly taken back into consideration. It is not the initial time it has been recommended the United States should modify its guidelines concerning the age one can vote, drink alcohol or join the military. Until 1920, only white men were given the right to vote. There were decades of fighting for the right to vote to be given to African Americans and women. So clearly, the right to vote for all hasn’t always been an established human right in America. Teen drivers have historically been the most reckless drivers. If we can’t confidently trust a 16 year old to drive a vehicle, how is it a good idea to give them the right to vote on the highest political positions in the country? It
In our current generation sixteen has shown to be a reckless, careless, and very low political point of view. I personally belive for sixteen being the age to vote would be a destructive change in the economey. Me being almost eighteen is even hard to have any perspective who should run or city, state, or even country. Therefore I strongley disagree with sixteen year old citizens voting. Being eighteen is a huge diplomatic age for a young man/women. I feel its a privelage earned with time and experiance. Time and experiance to me is very important to be able to vote. To understand and have a open perspective on politics should be an expectation to vote. The age of sixteen is a stressful age. With school, driving, and sports being an everyday
In the most recent election in 2016 only 59% of Americans voted. Many people today see this as a major issue; however, a major argument has risen on how to solve this problem. One of the solutions that have been considered is lowering the voting age to 16 to get younger Americans votes. However many Americans think that this is crazy to allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote. The clear and only answer to this contentious question is that 16 and 17 year olds should not be able to vote. As stated before 16 and 17 year olds should not be allowed to vote because sixteen and seventeen year olds are not mature enough, their opinions can be easily swayed or changed based on what others think, and they are not educated enough on politics in order to vote.
In my opinion, I do not believe they should lower the voting age to 16. I feel this way, because I do not think at the age of 16 they truly understand how politics works.I am gonna be 39 and I still do not understand how it all works. Like the artical states, according to U.S. Cenus Bureau report,"only 38% of voters in the 18 - 24 age group voted in 2012". I do not believe those numbers will increase by allowing 16 year olds to vote.I also agree with the artical, "that we should not add the least engaged part of our population to the electorate".
At the age of eighteen the voter would be mature and well educated and more likely to know more information on the subject or able to relate to the situation. As a eighteen year old would relate to the subject is that it would address the voters. As in a thirteen year old would be caught up in sports, discipline, school, out of school activities, clubs. The voting age is set for many reasons. It is set to eighteen for educational, transportation, self reliance, independence purposes.
I personally feel that 18 is the correct age for voting, as there are many legal rights that government has allowed at this age, be it license to drive or minimum legal age to get married.
“If 16 year olds are old enough to attend school districts that you underfold then 16 year olds are old enough to play a part in making it better”. Rebecca tilsen said to the Minnesota congress. This is one of Many reasons it should be lowered and most of them are stated in this argument.
This is where the specific qualifications aspect plays a significant role in lowering the voting age. By assessing the teens’ knowledge of contemporary politics and the history and system of American government, we will place the most capable and insightful voters on the forefront to represent the younger age
