One strategic plan for AOTF is to increase the research workforce to questions of importance and relevance for occupational therapy (AOTF, 2017).
Within the OTPF, four words can be used interchangeably. Occupation and activity can be used interchangeably to describe participation in daily life pursuits (OTPF, 2014). Occupation refers to the things that people want such as, need, or have to do; it also refers to the way that an individual is engaged in multiple activities (OTPF, 2014). According to Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain & Process (2014) occupations reflect to, “what people value in life and also give meaning to what they do. Additionally, the term occupation, as it is used in the Framework, refers to the daily life activities in which people engage; and both occupations and activities are used as interventions by practitioners (p. S6)”.
Theory is defined as a description of a set of phenomena and the relationships among the concepts. A frame of reference are theories that is used as the foundation for developing guidelines for practice that assist therapist with clinical reasoning related to the evaluation and treatment of a specific problems (Mosey.1996). The model practice provides a framework with which a therapist is able to make clinical decisions based on a scientific theoretical foundation such as anatomy and physiology an example is the biomechanical guideline that based on anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. Guidelines for practice are not diagnosis specific, but rather are address problems that people with a variety of diagnoses may experience.
My roles of occupation in my life are being a student, daughter, sister, and an employee. As this moment, my main role is being student in occupational therapy program. I attend to every single classes with a main purpose that I will receive the knowledge that I need to know in order to get my degree in Occupational Therapy Assistance.
Within four weeks of fieldwork, occupational therapy students got to know most of the residents at Ruth’s House (dementia unit). The residents have various medical conditions that limit their physical and mental capabilities. Anita, one of the residents in the facility exhibited a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Based on direct observation, Anita demonstrated fluctuating alertness periods. With no evident trigger, Anita had multiple acute episodes of confusion, irritability, and agitation. In a several group sessions, she was restless and was very difficult to redirect. She kept standing up despite being told to take a seat so she does not fall. She was verbally disorganized. In addition, during the 2-week fieldwork,
I was surprised to see how competitive the field of occupational therapy was. The field is getting very popular so getting into the program is difficult. There is a chance that one must apply to several accredited schools numerous times to get accepted, not to mention that there are limited spots in a class (“Signs OT is Not Right For You, Johnson,” 2015). I was also surprised to learn that one participates in field work much like nursing students. I initially thought that field work is not necessary and all the training is done in the classroom. The limited number of accredited schools in California is also surprising! This revelation makes me feel a little concerned. I think there should be more schools that offer this program. Additional

My level 1 fieldwork II was assigned at Charleston Area Medical Center – Medication Rehabilitation Inpatient Services in Charleston, West Virginia. It was an Inpatient Rehabilitation which provides Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy services. My supervisor is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant for more than 3 years. My fieldwork started around 7:45am and ends at 4pm. My supervisor provides me with occupational profile of the patient, diagnosis and the treatment before interacting with the patients. They usually see 3 patients in a day for 90 mins therapy sessions.
Despite the growth of occupational therapy to a highly recognized profession within the health care field, the role of an occupational therapists are often times confused to be interchangeable with that of other professionals. Occupational therapist who specialize in hand therapy are often referred to as occupational-based (OB) hand therapists. As occupational therapists, these OB hand therapists are regularly faced with the dilemma of trying to differentiate their services from those of a physical therapist, due to the similarity of task. One of the major reasons why clients and physicians are getting confused about the two professions is due to the lack of occupation-focused treatment by the OB hand therapists. In order to avoid such confusion
Occupational therapy helps to heal a multitude of disabilities; the current high demand for therapists is somewhat due to modern issues, but some have been occurring since the beginning of mankind. Missing a limb is one problem that has occurred for millennium. There is documented evidence that humans have tried to replace a missing appendage since approximately 950 B.C. Throughout time prosthetics have mainly been produced with crude leftover supplies like wood, metal, and leather. More recently, rapid advancements in technology have helped progress the artificial limb from a beam of wood to a robotic arm controlled by the persons own thoughts. To fully understand the accomplishments of today, it is essential to understand the evolution
Occupational therapists focus their work on any person that may need assistance throughout their daily life. I have decided to focus on the role an occupational therapist can play in the life of a pediatric patient with autism. The life of someone with autism is completely different than many people imagine. I have a very close friend that has autism and my mother has been a special needs teacher for children with autism for as long as I can remember. If people with autism could be better understood, their lives would be much easier. I am going into occupational therapy school in May and I want to use my research from this paper and my tools as a Christian to be able to help those with autism find a way to build a relationship with
The ultimate purpose of fieldwork within the field of occupational therapy is to prepare each future practitioner with further observations of what they will be practicing and to provide a hands-on experience. During the fieldwork, the student should observe and apply the fundamentals of practice. By adhering to the code of ethics, each student should demonstrate working behaviors that reflect an understanding of professional standards and code of ethics appropriate to the practice environment. This also can include maintaining appropriate boundaries and being able to recognizes professional standards that are related to their facility and one’s that protect the profession as a whole. Safety is also another vital aspect during fieldwork and
A job in any type of therapeutic healthcare can be a rewarding and satisfying job. However, I believe that occupational therapy is a special and extremely rewarding field. A field in which I am over the moon passionate about and completely infatuated with. It is the thought of helping people who have been through horrible tragedies to turn everything around and live a happy healthy life that drives me the most. I feel very strongly as though this profession is where I am meant to work in and make a difference in patient’s lives. The more I research topics and studies of occupational therapy the more infatuated with the field I become because it is much more than just a job. To me, this career is a lifestyle
