Most people would rank the importance of vision checks near the top of the health check lists because sight is one sense that cannot be replaced once it is lost. Checking the health of the eye on a regular basis will keep many people from becoming blind. People have gotten into the habit of taking precautions to protect the eye from injuries caused by falling objects or flying debris but many will forget to have their eyes examined once a year to discover any differences in vision acuity. Exposure to chemicals, toxins, bright lights and minute particles can reduce visual perception and the importance of vision checks comes through when an optometrist removes a piece of foreign matter that found it way into the eye pocket and has been there for weeks. With these discoveries during regular eye exams, people realize the importance of wearing goggles in an industrial environment. Children know the importance of vision checks because total vision care is learned at school. Adults learn about vision care health checks when children have annual physicals and since these checks only take a few minutes, parents will usually schedule vision checks for every member of the family. The Department of Transportation takes vision checks very seriously. Vision checks are made every time a person renews their driver's license. Children's vision is checked regularly to ensure that they can see the blackboard at school. An optometrist could order a comprehensive eye exam for a later date if the vision checks produce results that indicate there is a problem with the way adults or children see the world. Parents should consider the importance of vision checks because any vision problems left untreated could become a tragedy, which could have been avoided if action was taken sooner and vision checks were taken more
