Colin Wilson says, “The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain.” Throughout the ages mankind always has had disastrous moments throughout history, but does that mean we accept it as a norm? In Violence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History, economic historian Douglass C. North examined that, “all societies must deal with the possibility of violence, and they do so in different ways.” It’s agreeable that violence is the inevitable and that it will happen many times in different historical periods. Although, it does seem that human life can be very repetitive and not everyone was born with a specific purpose, unless, according to …show more content…
In The Bible on Leadership, author Lorin Woolfe finds ways where leadership can be found in biblical stories, and comments that they form some of the major archetypes of our collective consciousness and can serve as universal examples of leadership at its best and worst. Through her whole book she gives examples of leadership by the main characters in each book, especially Moses in the book of Exodus. The Bible, the book of Exodus is the second book written, right after the book of Genesis, which talks about the creation of the world by God. It’s very interesting that this is the second book, because it shows why Colin Wilson’s statement is flawed. In the beginning of the book, there was the time of the beginning of civilization, and the people in Egypt would worship the Pharaoh, or king. It is said that God would protect a person named Moses, and then he would then be adopted by the Pharaoh’s daughter and be raised in royalty. Then in one of Christianity’s memorable biblical story, God calls Moses with a special revelation, through a burning bush to release His people from slavery. For many years, the people of Egypt suffered under the Pharaoh, and were treated unfairly building statues for him. Moses then would go and tell the Pharaoh the consequences if he does not let God’s people go, but the Pharaoh would not listen to Moses and then the pain came. Moses, through the power of God, would cast all sorts of plagues throughout the land, and also turning all of the water to blood, plagues of insects, boils, and hail. After the last plague, the eldest son of the Pharaoh would have died, and then the Pharaoh allowed the people to leave. One other part of the book of Exodus, was the presentation of the Ten Commandments, which is basically the universal rulebook on how to live under God. If it weren’t for Moses, he
In this TEDTalk, Steven Pinker introduced an interesting trend in societal violence. The talk began by presenting fax that showed a dramatic decrease in the amount of violent crime beginning as far back as the earliest human hunter-gatherers. In many places during that time period, the chances of dying at the hands of another human were as high is sixty percent. Although the media and people tend to believe we are living in a time of extreme violence, we are actually living during one of the most peaceful times in human history. Even though the 20th Century witnessed tragedies such as the Holocaust, Rwanda, Stalin’s mass executions, and two World Wars, the chances of a human by violent means was less than three percent.
The history of humanity is written in blood. Even as violence as a whole is decreasing, acts of extreme violence continue to be perpetrated. To be clear, this essay is not about individuals violent and cold at their core. Such people are readily understood within the image of a lone, antisocial killer set apart from humanity by their very lacking of it. This essay is about violence conducted on a scale that can only be enabled by the participation of people who, under normal circumstances, would not act violent. The puzzle of how and why genocides, apartheid, state brutality, torture, and mob killings are perpetrated by ordinary people points to psychosocial mechanisms as their cause. Ordinarily non-violent people commit extreme violence
When I think about leadership, Matthew 26:36-45 always comes to my mind. In this passage, Jesus unpacked the roles and responsibilities of a true leader. A true leader leads by sample without looking back. The scripture states, “…My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little further, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed…. Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping.
Human civilization has come a long way from the Stone Age. Yet man continues to be violent in his conduct. In fact, violence has increased today. A man cannot walk on the street without looking over his shoulder because of fear of assault. Top leaders of the nation, as well as retired military generals, are assassinated in broad daylight. The roads are spilled with human blood. Firearms, bombs, swords, are frequently flourished and used.
Christianity in the Handmaid's Tale In modern day society it is hard to pick out religion in literature and culture, In the book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, chapter 14 mentions how American literature is somehow based around Christian beliefs, Although in The Handmaid’s Tale there is no obvious Christ like figure, there are still many hidden details that suggest a connection to religious beliefs. A common and ongoing theme in this book is the relationship of women and children. The handmaid's have a strange relationship with the kids they bear, Handmaids give birth then those kids are given given to the couple that the handmaid is assigned to. Handmaid's are basically defined by their fertility because that is their job, this -although

In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” the prisoners are trapped and oblivious to the lies before them. The atrocity of acts committed by mankind throughout history demonstrates the dangerous results when society is unable to restrain the natural evil present in human beings. The words ‘humane’, and ‘civilized’, both come from roots that describe society. Their positive connotations associate humankind with an inherent morality. But it is hard to have faith in our race when throughout history; we have brutalized each other in such barbaric ways. How can independently thinking, emotionally compassionate beings take part in massacres like the killings at Columbine or in the terrorist attacks in 2001? The September 11th bombings took thousands of innocent lives, and struck fear into the hearts of millions. What shocked the observing world though, was not the number of dead. It was the senselessness of the cause, the raw savagery of the attacks, the utter lack of humanity. It begged the question: what happens when the moderating hand of society fails to restrain a group of radicals? The answer was simple. We saw the innate evil present in each one of us, in its undistilled, uncensored form. The Columbine killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, were disillusioned bullies- torn away from society’s expectations through a combination of violence tendencies and psychosis. Their horrific acts were a result of their innate evil nature breaking through the wall of societal structure. Golding’s contention was that in most cases, rules were forced
Though out history, humans have consistently committed horrific acts through war, terrorism, torture and other atrocities. Some people believe that society can prevent people from committing such horrific acts. However, contrary to the belief that brutality can disappear, the terrible acts by humans are not going to disappear because brutality is human nature. People are naturally cruel, and regardless of people 's effort or the environment, one is inclined to be brutal. In Maggie Nelson’s “Great Watch,” Nelson explains how people can be adapt to brutality. The people continually choose to be brutal when morality points to the contrary because people adapt the brutality, despite one is aware of the amoral actions. In Martha Stout’s “When
The violence prevention program followed a theory called Health Promotion Model for Childhood Violence Prevention and Exposure (Regan, 2009). The program was implemented at a charter school in Philadelphia. The program’s target population consisted of 9th and 10th graders who were enrolled in a health class. In addition, the program focused on four topics: gang violence, gun violence, dating violence, and anger and conflict management. Moreover, the program was implemented for three weeks and it consisted of presentations and interactive activities. In the first session, a 40-minute presentation was given which cover local and national statistics about gang violence and gun violence (Regan, 2009, p.30). Furthermore, there was an interactive
I feel that I witnessed structural violence by nature of where I lived as a child. I never described it to anyone using the term structural violence, but I think it's a good example. I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and spent most of my childhood living in the city's largest housing project, the Hill District. In the 1930's and 60's the Hill District once upon a time was a neighborhood that was a hotbed for jazz musicians like Stanley Turrentine and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson. It was home of once of the most frequented jazz circuits in the country and home of the only African-American owned baseball stadium in the country, which was the home of the Pittsburgh Crawfords of the Negro League. By all accounts the Hill District
Although violence is one of the unfavourable social behaviours that is surely involved with a individual. Over 70 % of violence in the United States plays a very strong role in daily lives. Today the rate of violence is increasing faster than ever; the more people realize the truth the more they are becoming aware of what is happening around them. Our best example would be Syria: not having any knowledge on what is happening and then getting involved makes it hard for me to handle the truth in how much violence humans are facing over. Violence has only one way stop and that is for our social group to understand what matters the most.

Historians say that we use the past as a platform to live for the future. History has exemplified at every occasion, the fall of civilization is accompanied by the rise of barbarism. This pattern has indisputably been true at the turn of every century due to the fact it is basic human nature. From the downfall of the Romans to the rise of the Mongols, or the fall of the Soviet Union to the rise of Al-Qaeda and ISIS, there has never been an absence the barbaric nature in our society. Nevertheless, their time on this earth has always been temporary for one principal reason. The civilized have always resisted, resented, and reformed. These three simple notions is what has ushered our collective progress. We have sought out to
Atkinson (2014) believes effective leadership displays, “No person is less divine than another, and therefore no person is less than another” (p. 145). Throughout the bible, there are many people in scripture that God placed in leadership roles. Jesus, David, Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core attributes discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader of Christ needs such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of the process, and encouragement of the heart.
Effective leadership approaches from a biblical perspective consist of God’s nature in his manifested character. Christian leaders are willing to pay the price to lead in Christ’s affliction. Paul said there is a price to pay in order to lead and Jesus reminded us, “Remember what I told you: 'A servant is not greater than his master. ' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also” (John 15:20, New International Version). Christian leaders need core attributes of God’s styles and approaches, support and linkage from scriptures, and knowledge of his leadership models of truth for effective leadership. However, these perspectives will gave me a better appreciation and insight of who God is and who I can be with his guidance.
