My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most infamous and influential artists of all time. When I saw that Van Gogh’s painting “Olive Trees With Yellow Sky and Sun” was on display at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, I knew I had to choose it for this paper. Before doing the research for this assignment, I didn’t know much about Vincent Van Gogh, but the fact that pretty much everyone knows his name and recognizes him as a huge part of art history, it made me naturally really curious about him.
Vincent Van Gogh did not become famous until after his death at the age of 37 in July of 1890. He was born in March of 1853. Van Gogh would be known as a troublesome boy who kept to himself and went on long walks through the country side. His mother Anna Cornelia Carbentus and Father Theodorus (Dorus) Van Gogh struggled to understand their eldest son, this constant struggle would shape their relationship and Van Gogh’s life for years to come.
Vincent Van Gogh, the Dutch artist who painted Starry Night, was disrespected and unappreciated for his works during his life. However, today he is considered one of the greatest Dutch painters. Today, his work is known for its detail, beauty, and emotion. One might claim that Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night depicts his supposed insanity. However, his painting Starry Night depicts his feelings of isolation, his feelings of alienation, and the appreciation he thought he would soon achieve during his lifetime, though each of which do not necessarily depict insanity.
It’s hard to come up with one overarching definition of genius as there are many different types of geniuses and intelligences. There can be intellectual geniuses, such as Neil deGresse Tyson, musical geniuses, such as Mozart, or even kinesthetic geniuses, such as Michael Phelps. To be a genius one must excel and be influential in their particular type of intelligence. A genius should also be remembered for their work. Many people could fit my definition of intelligence but one person that really exemplifies this definition is Vincent van Gogh.
A great artist once wrote, “If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced”. This artist was Vincent van Gogh, soon to be an appraised artist known all around the world for his works, such as Starry Night. He is one of the very first artists of the post-impressionist style than is now adored in every continent. However, there is much more to the man than one painting. Creating a full timeline that stretches beyond Gogh’s life, this paper will discuss the life of Vincent van Gogh and the impression he made on the world.
In 1874, Exhibition of members of the Private Company of Artists: Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Morisot, Degas and Sisley perplexed the society with the dematerialization of the reality in their paintings and signified the birth of the Impressionism as a new movement. However, a decade later, the concept of capturing of the immediate illusion exhausted itself, and crisis of Impressionism appeared with changes in painterly manner of Renoir, Degas interest in three-dimensionality, and Monet’s involvement with subjectivity of the perception. The new tendencies emerged: Cezanne experimented with perspective, color and visual mass, Seurat and Signac worked on color theory in its application to divisionism. These developments in painting remained innovative
The 1889 painting, Starry Night, conceptualized and composed by Vincent van Gogh has long been a favorite art piece of mine. I had learned about Vincent van Gogh at a young age however it was not until I was told to illustrate an image using van Gogh’s abstract style with oil pastels in a high school art class, that I had subconsciously gained more respect towards art. At first, I struggled; I often tend to be more of a realist than idealist. However, connecting with and reviewing his Starry Night painting seemed to hold a deeper meaning within the color scheme of blue and yellow and strategically placed curvatures. The illustration held life, passion, and spoke to the viewer without words that some days you need to let go of any rigid stress,
The Starry Night (1889) painted by Vincent van Gogh is one of his famous painting in the world. Van Gogh was known as an Impressionist artist and many people heard that he was “crazy” and suffered with mental health issues throughout his life; he even cut his ear after his fight with his friend during winter in 1888, a year before his painting Starry Night, and not long after he died in 1890. (Shabi, K.) Thinking that Vincent van Gogh was insane affected his work in a bad way. Even the other artist and critics did not appreciated and saw Van Gogh’s Starry Night as a sloppy art with the evidence of him being crazy. (Shabi, K.) He used many composition such as: contrast, proportion, movement, and balance.
When I was a little girl, I dreamed of becoming an artist like Vincent Van Gogh. I enjoyed being creative and portraying my emotions onto the canvas. I interpret the world using observations and imaginations and then transcribing those visions onto paper. As I grew older, my dream to become an artist never fades, but my gained interests in science sparks a new idea. In high school, I took an anatomy class that ignite my love for the human body. My teacher would constantly draw diagrams on the board to help us understand the physiology of the human body. These diagrams were extremely helpful for me, and I enjoyed redrawing her sketches in my notes. Flipping through my textbook in that class, I was astonished at the incredible drawings and how
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter that belonged to the post-impressionism movement. As years of mental illness and anxiety progressively became worse, his unfortunate death at 37 years old came to be via a gunshot wound to the head, which many assume and accept to be self-inflicted. This compelling emotion is definitely illustrated in his work because often it is honest and bold. In Van Gogh's, The Night Cafe, the artist's technique is exactly that: bold, and honest- capturing the essence of human desolation. The complementary colors red and green of the walls call for the eyes of the viewer, and not only that, but the earthy color palette fights for the audience's
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most recognized artists in the world. Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. Van Gogh was born into a family of six children in which his father was a pastor and his mother was an artist. He was named after his stillborn brother who died exactly one year before he was born.
My group selected the painting The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh painted The Starry Night in 1889 while he was a patient in a sanitorium in St.- Remy, France. Van Gogh was “an epileptic who suffered from erratic bouts of depression, came to this former abbey-turned-sanatorium in a futile attempt to ward off the disquieting shadows that haunted him in both his sleeping and waking hours and which eventually caused him to take his own life” (Billy 44-45). Van Gogh painted The Starry Night by using his memory and the view outside of his sanatorium window. I will be describing line and texture for my elements and pattern and repetition for my principles. I also will be describing iconography as my additional method.
When we look at an artwork in the Museum or gallery, what kind characteristics are we looking for? The artist, the historical story or the symbolic of this artwork? We always say that a hundred people will have a hundred Hamlets so that we have different judgment criterions. As a fine arts student, colors of the artwork attract me frequently which can affect my emotions and feelings mostly, and I might feel artist’s expression. In psychology territory, there is the color therapy that the psychology of color is based on the mental and emotional effects colors have on sighted people in all facets of life(Color Psychology). Cold colors and warm colors both affect human’s emotions dissimilarly.Due to my personal method during this week, I picked the favourite piece in Moma, which draws my attention so much-"The Starry Night."
