Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo is still known as one of the best writers in the French Romantic category (Barrère, Jean-Bertrand 1). He was born on February 26, 1802, in Besançon, France and his real name is Victor-Marie Hugo (“Victor Hugo” 1). Victor’s father Joseph-Lèopold-Sigisbert Hugo was a major in Napoleon’s army so when he was little Victor never really got to see his father because Joseph traveled a lot with the army and his parents got alienated away from another (Barrère, Jean-Bertrand 1). Victor continuously had to move from many places when he was growing up they would move from Elba, to Naples, and even to Madrid before moving back to Paris (Barrère, Jean-Bertrand 1). By the 1840’s Hugo was one of France’s most celebrated literary figures (“Victor Hugo” 1). In 1841 he was elected into the French Academy and was also nominated for the Chamber of Peers (“Victor Hugo” 1). In 1843 he had to step back from writing for a little bit because his daughter and her husband died in an accidental drowning (“Victor Hugo” 1). In private Victor started to work on a new novel which would soon turn into the world famous book “Les Misérables” (“Victor Hugo” 1). In 1851 Hugo fled to coup in Brussels and he lived there until 1870 (“Victor Hugo” 1). Among most of the books that Hugo published at the time his best seller was the book “Les Misérables” which was published in 1862, this book became not only a best seller in Europe but it also became a huge seller in the United States (“Victor Hugo” 1). A year after Hugo returned to France he became a deputy in the National Assembly but he ended up retiring later that month (Barrère, Jean-Bertrand 1). Hugo’s life became pretty dark after that, in 1871 one of his sons died and then again in 1873 another of his sons died, his work after those moments became darker than his earlier writing (Barrère, Jean-Bertrand
