The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, American College of Poultry Veterinarians, the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, and the American College of Zoological Medicine are all able to certify veterinarians. However, certification is not required, unlike licensing. Licensing, including the D.V.M., can be obtained from the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), which is organized by the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Every state varies in their ruling towards a person applying to take the NAVLE. Many states have additional requirements for veterinarian licensing whether it is for an exotic or companion veterinarian.
A career working with exotic animals can be extremely rewarding with a range of avenues that can be considered. These avenues can vary from positions working at wildlife rehabilitation centers to working at the zoo. Individuals that select this career path should have physical stamina, a philanthropic attitude toward animals, and be able to respect the goals of their employed animal organization.
Exotic animal veterinarians stereotypically provide the same level of care as a regular veterinarian, but have focused teachings to handle wild or exotic animals. These veterinarians may include household pets within their

These veterinarians may work alone or as part of a team operating in a larger clinic or hospital. A private practitioner may offer numerous services such as health exams, surgery, vaccinations, treatment of sick animals, and emergency care. Private practitioners tend to focus on either small animals such as dogs and cats or large animals such as horses or ruminants. Some practitioners may operate a mixed practice working with both small and large animals. Clinical practitioners can narrow their veterinarian interests further and focus on avian, equine, or feline
I chose the career of a Vet Technician. This job is often confused with the veterinarian or veterinary technologist. These two fields are totally different than a vet technician. Veterinarian required eight years of schooling, where the Veterinary technologist requires a bachelor degree in applied science. The job of an veterinary technician is to provide nursing care and assist surgeries for animals. Think of it as a human nurse, and a doctor, the vet tech assist the veterinarian in diagnosing illness and injuries. Some other jobs a veterinary technician might have would be preparing an animal for a surgery like a scrub with germicidal soap, sterilizing the surgical utensils, setting up a room
Owning exotic animals is both cruel to the animal its self and dangerous to those who care for the animals. Keeping exotic animals as pets is cruel. In the article Do You Really Want a Baby Tiger? by Mia Lewis the author states “The end result is that far too many of these exotic animals spend almost their entire lives in the ‘prison’ of a small cage.” Obviously, exotic animals are meant to be in environments that promote their natural behavior; forcing these animals to be locked up in a small pen
There are options beyond private practice. I want to help animals on a daily basis. I want to see dogs and cats happy.
There are two levels of education for entry into this occupation. A 4-year program for veterinary technologist, and a 2-year program for veterinary technician. Both need to pass a credentialing exam to be licensed, certified, or registered depending on the state. Also it is recommended that in highschool you take biology, math, and science classes. Both veterinary technologists and technician typically work in private clinics and hospitals. Sometimes in laboratories, humane societies and universities. There is a higher rate of illnesses than the national rate, this being because workers could could get bitten, scratched, or kicked. This happens because of dealing with aggressive or scared animals. Many clinics are open 24 hours so with that being said some will have to work holidays or weekends. The clinic that I am interning at they are not open 24 hours, they are open from 8-5 Monday through Friday.
the professions and the tasks and responsibilities in the veterinary field are not as easy as they sound. Being a veterinary has its responsibilities and they have to be followed by everyone in the clinic or workplace to make things simple and keep it a good organized place to work . It is way more difficult and not as simple, everyone just thinks that being a vet is just about taking care of animals and that's it, but it's really more than that. Also being a veterinary technician is similar to a veterinarian but they have different duties. One of the duties of being a tech is evaluat animals assist veterinarian, collect samples and administer medication, clean and wrap wounds and many more duties.
There are many kinds of veterinarians. There are vets that specialize in common house pets like, cats and dogs, vets that take care of exotic creatures like, lizards and snakes, and vets that treat large animals like, horses and cows. For my future career I chose a large animal veterinarian. A large animal veterinarian can treat animals from the zoo to the farm. They mainly work with horses and cattle but they know how to treat other animals. A large animal vet needs to know several types of math and how to use each type in their daily work.
As a registered veterinary technologist, I would expect my daily routine to be complied of various, and sometimes strenuous, tasks and responsibilities, such as evaluating an animals condition, checking vital statistics, cleaning and wrapping wounds, restraining animals, preparing and stocking surgery rooms with necessary supplies, and some dental care. As a registered veterinary technician, I expect that good people skills are necessary as well, due to the fact that I would more than likely be in considerable communication with our patients owners while the animals are under our
There is a lot of hard work put into this job, maintaining the health of all the animal patients. The overall job description of a veterinarian is a doctor who, “care[s] for the health of animals and work[s] to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals” (Veterinarian). Vets also provide emergency care for injured animals as well as provide euthanization for animals unable to be treated effectively. There are several different kinds of vets, each with different daily tasks and patients to work on. The type of vet everyone usually first thinks of is a Clinical Vet, also known as a Companion animal Veterinarian. They treat regular household pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, etc. This type of vet’s work environment usually includes being in private clinics and animal hospitals most of the time but can travel to farms and homes if needed. This is the most common field veterinarian students pursue. Another type is Equine Veterinarian. This type of vet focuses just on treating and caring for horses. They spend most of their times on ranches, and also at places like horse racing tracks and shows. Large Animal Veterinarians treat large farm animals such as horses, cows, sheep and pigs. A branch of this type of veterinarian is a Food Animal Veterinarian, who work towards improving public health by treating animals that
In a nutshell, exotic animals are a poison to society due to the expense we have to waste on them and their changeable habits. Keep in mind that the next time one might buy an exotic pet, they must be cautious of how these pets may affect a person’s
To start off with, exotic animals are dangerous for owners. The text “Wild Animals aren’t Pets” states, “In 2009, a 2-year-old Florida girl was strangled by a 12 foot long Burmese python, a family pet that had gotten out of its aquarium.” This tells us that wild animals can easily hurt us with one little slip up.
Owning exotic animals could be good for the animals because you could breed them and keep their species alive. For humans you could open up a learning center and teach the kids about the animals or even adults. This could teach people to take more care of the animals. “Exotic pets are so different from cats and dogs that owning one can be an incredible learning experience.” says Dr Laurie Hess. The ways you can learn from owning these animals is amazing. Owning exotic pets wouldn’t be so bad after all.
For your pet’s needs a Veterinarian can prescribe and administer medications, perform surgeries and set fractures, treat wounds and euthanize the terminally ill animals. Vet’s can work with a variety of animals from small to as large as equine. Large animal Veterinarians spend a lot of time on the road traveling from farm to farm in a truck customized with necessary medical equipment.
Every child has asked their parents for a pet animal. The thing is though, is what type of animal they asked for. Such as a dog or cat and even the occasional hippopotamus for Christmas, right? Lots of people buy exotic animals not knowing how much work it really takes to take care of them. For example, many people have bought pythons and when they get to a size where they can’t keep care of them they let them go into the wild. Exotic animals are very costly and time consuming, they grow up and get bigger and all in all they are very dangerous.
How would you feel if you were taken away from your parents and your home and was put in a cage? This happens to many exotic animals all over the world. Whether the animal was already born in captivity or was plucked from the wild. Owning an exotic animal as a pet can be dangerous, time consuming, and cruel. People all around the U.S. own exotic animals when they shouldn’t.
Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases of animals. Treating pets is one of the most profitable fields in veterinary medicine. The proper vaccination of animals and the diagnosis of diseases are part of a veterinarian’s duties.
