The Versatility of Marijuana As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Meah, 2016, quote 4). Change is happening all around the world at any given time, even if people do not know about it. Instead of demeaning people for not knowing all pieces of information that is possible to know about a subject they should instead be taught about it. Educating the population on new and growing issues in the community will help individuals to have an actual opinion on the situation that they can support on their own instead of mindlessly following another person’s lead. An example of this is that the majority of people do not know the versatility of a marijuana plant. Society thinks that …show more content…
Illnesses that are considered for treatment using marijuana in Ohio, for example, are different from ones in Alaska, but many of them overlap. The most common are cancer, epilepsy or other seizure disorders, MS, ALS, crohn’s disease, any type of chronic pain, HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, and nausea. Almost all of the illnesses that are considered for treatment using medical marijuana relate to either some type of chronic pain or involuntary muscle spasms. Once again, the list varies from state to state, but many common illnesses that involve one of these two types of problems are on each state’s requirements. Many of these illnesses have also had studies conducted about them in regards to using medical marijuana as a treatment even though not all of them were conducted on humans. Even so, the results showed that these diseases could have the potential for treatment by using medical …show more content…
Common side effects of smoking and ingesting marijuana are dizziness, red eyes, dilated pupils, dry mouth, increased appetite, slow reaction time, paranoia, poor memory, and rapid heartbeat. These side effects are examples of what could happen if marijuana is not used in moderation. Recreational use most commonly involves smoking and inhalation, which can lead to lung damage. A user’s heart rate has the ability to increase up to twice the normal rate shortly after smoking and can stay like that until about 3 to 4 hours later which puts the person at a larger risk for a heart
Some physical side effects are loss of reflexes and coordination, red eyes, increase in appetite (especially sweets), and nausea due to dizziness (Fact Sheet, 2). Marijuana can cause serious consequences like lack of interest in school, goals, and active interest
When the THC present in marijuana enter the bloodstream stream and reach the brain it binds to the cannabinoid receptors. Cannabis also includes many subjective and highly tangible results, such as food tasting better and more appreciation of aromas. Some short term physical effects include , increased heart rate, dry mouth, and reddening of eyes among other physical effects. A few long term effects include , being associated with diseases with the liver, lungs, heart, and vasculature. More testing is needed to determine if cannabis can truly be fatal. You can develop an addiction that could last a while. Cannabis use disorder is quite common with excessive weed smokers.

Marijuana is a mixture of the dried parts of the cannabis sativa hemp plant. Excessive marijuana use can lead to an addiction. The main chemical in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which moves quickly through the bloodstream and to the brain, causing mild hallucinogenic effects. THC binds with cannabdnob receptors and activates neurons, which causes adverse effects on the mind and body. THC can mimic or block actions of neurotransmitters and interfere with normal functions. Marijuana use can lead to disturbed thoughts and can worsen psychotic symptoms. The short-term effects of marijuana include impaired coordination; skewed sensory and time perception; difficulty with thinking; shortened attention span and distractibility; impaired learning and memory. Long term users of marijuana often experience lowered motivation and some can experience anxiety, panic attacks, respiratory illness, and increased heart rate and risk of heart attack.
Although marijuana is a hallucinogen it does not have a highly addictive characteristic like other hallucinogens. In 2004 the National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that its short term effects include, but are not limited to: blood shot eyes, dry mouth and increased heart rate. Its long term effects include, but are not limited to: lower testosterone levels in men, and higher testosterone levels in women. When you compare this to other drug’s side affects you see that they are not so bad.
Cannabis has copious amounts of effects on your body and brain. The effects range from bad all the way to good. Negative effects of cannabis may include anxiety, paranoia, and lowered reaction time, increased heart rate, distorted sense of time, and in some cases, psychosis. Cannabis does have positive effects for people with illnesses including cancer, multiple sclerosis, and many more. For teens, however, there is an increase of cannabis’ negative effects on the brain. This may include decreased brain activity, decreased neurons, trouble thinking and focusing, and a higher rate of dropping out of high school. Chronic users of cannabis may become dependent on it. It can also increase your rate of respiratory problems,
Medical marijuana, also known as cannabis, is a controversial topic because many find it beneficial as others find the usage to be recreational. Throughout the years, medical marijuana has gone through periods of times in which it was legal and illegal. Over the years laws have been developed in order to try and regulate the usage of the drug. Studies have shown many the benefits of treating diseases and symptoms. Today it is used in treatment with many different diseases and disorders such as cancer, post-traumatic stress disorder, and multiple sclerosis. As medical marijuana has different species and uses of the product, it is important to depict where the drug can be used for treatment. The usage of this drug enables patients to have a more positive and livable outcome with treatments.
Studies have proven that marijuana is no more harmful to a person’s health than alcohol or tobacco. Every year, tobacco kills roughly 390,000 people, alcohol contributes to 80,000 deaths in America and marijuana contributed to 0; no deaths from marijuana have ever been recorded in US history (Abovetheinfluence.org). When smoking tobacco, the user inhales tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide, and 200 other known poisons into the lungs (Abovetheinfluence.org). All forms of tobacco, including cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, and chewing tobacco, contain the addictive drug nicotine, and can also cause cancer. Alcohol alters a person's perceptions, emotions, movement, vision, and hearing. Alcohol plays a role in at least 50 percent of traffic deaths, about half of murders, and about 25 percent of suicides (Abovetheinfluence.org). Marijuana side effects include delusions, impaired memory, hallucinations and disorientation, which are no different from the side effects of alcohol alone.
More states are passing laws that allow people to use medical marijuana. What does it treat, and who can and should use it? Pain is one of the main reasons individuals ask for a prescribed medication, from chronic headaches, disease like cancer, or a long-term condition, like glaucoma or nerve pain medications are usually prescribed to insure relief. If you live in a state where medical marijuana is legal and your doctor thinks medical marijuana would help, you’ll get a “marijuana card.” You will also be put on a list that allows you to buy marijuana from an authorized seller, called a dispensary. Your local doctor may also prescribe medical marijuana to treat the following: Muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, Nausea from cancer chemotherapy,
The signs of addiction are thinking problems, physical health problems, and mental health problems. When teenagers use marijuana, it affects the way their brains develop, reducing the way they think, learn, and solve problems. In the long term, marijuana use also correlates to lower intelligence. Smoking marijuana can lead to many lung related issues including chronic respiratory illness and cough. Furthermore, it can result in higher heart rates for up to 3 hours after use, potentially increasing the likelihood of a heart attack or other cardiac issues. In terms of mental health, marijuana can cause paranoia, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking, along with higher incidences of depression and anxiety, especially in
Starting with the physical effects of marijuana abuse, the first and arguably most serious effect of the drug is the damage it causes to the cardiovascular system. After inhaling marijuana, the user is five times more likely to suffer a heart attack. Almost immediately after ingestion, cannabis causes a severe spike in blood pressure and pulse. This change directly increases the
Possibility of addiction is only one of the disadvantages on Marijuana. There are short-term and long-term effects from the use of the drug. The most common short-term effects include paranoia, difficulty with concentration, anxiety, fatigue, and hallucinations. “If you’re not around good people, you will end up having a bad experience and be very paranoid and anxious.” (Daily User One, 2017) This person said that the people you are around and your surroundings in general can also alter how you react to the THC in your system. Other short-term effects that are more dangerous include increased heart rate (which is particularly dangerous to people with heart disease), decreased blood pressure, and damaged blood vessels caused by the smoke. The long-term effects include memory loss, IQ level (due to blood cell lose from smoking), decreased motivation, and ability
Respiratory problems may arise from continued use as well as the usual coughing and wheezing associated with smoking marijuana. Other common side effects of marijuana are decreased motor skills, light headedness, and redness of the eyes.
People usually do not think this will ever happen to them, because it is very rare that you hear of this occurring. What people do not realize though is that this is usually not ever found, they just suffer from the effects. Another bad side effect marijuana has is that it increases heart rates, causes anxiety and panic attacks (65). These effects can lead to serious trauma that could cause death. This is so serious because people do not think they ever have to go to the hospital, so it is never detected in their brains. Due to smoking marijuana, one’s brain and body are at an extremely high risk of these bad side effects.
Along with "getting high" from smoking marijuana, there are many problems that can occur both physically and mentally. Immediate effects hold a wide range of symptoms. Users suffer many symptoms from increased heart rates, nausea, and headaches, to agitation, dizziness, confusion, and paranoia. Respiratory problems are more likely to occur, such as asthma and lung cancer. Smokers might experience panic attacks, difficulty with short term memory, feeling clumsy, and being uncoordinated. Other kinds of effects are seen in being withdrawn from society and peer groups. Lack of enthusiasm in life can become a problem for the user in quitting. Severe mental disorders and psychosis may also be seen later in life. The one symptom that
