Recently, the Junior Civitan Club held a charter ceremony to officially recognize the club as part of Junior Civitan. This was a very momentous occasion for not only members and sponsors of the club, but for the school as well.

Valley Forge was George Washington’s winter camp in the years 1777-78. It was a harsh and cold time for the Colonists troops then, and many were considering leaving the Continental Army or deserting. Many died but most of the troops survived the cold winter. They trained and drilled to become better soldiers. If I were a soldier at Valley Forge, I would choose to stay. One reason I would stay is that less than half the soldiers died or got sick in Valley Forge according to Estimates of Illness and Death. Cold winters, nasty cookery, worn out shoes, and lack of support was the definition of valley forge. My winter at valley forge was a difficult time, not just for me, but as well as my fellow soldiers due to many factors. The question “ would you have re-enlisted?” determined many soldiers futures. I did not re-enlist due to three main reasons, deaths due to illness, harsh conditions, and lack of support.

A Quinceanera is a hispanic coming of age ceremony. The preparation of the young ladies is based on the future role they would take as members of their family and community. This celebration includes music, food, and a dance performed by the Quinceanera and her court. This is a celebration in the hispanic culture that transforms young girls into young ladies, it acknowledges the ending of childhood and a new beginning but yet over time, it has lost it’s tradition, history and it’s purpose. I find myself one of George Washington’s soldiers fighting for the rebels at Valley Forge. Valley Forge is a hard place to live and especially fight, but something’s make more of an impact than other things here. One is that our hearts are constantly filled with smoke and our eyes are constantly affected by this. Another is a sickness, we have thousands of men sick here and many have already died. And one of the main things is that we are running very low on meat and quality food and we are eating low protein food. But despite those things I still have a hard decision to make soon I will have to decide to reenlist or not and go home to my family. Sequoyah was a Cherokee Indian who created the Cherokee language. He was born around 1760 to 1765 in the village of Tuskeegee, Tennessee. His mother was the daughter of a Cherokee chief, and his father was a Virginia fur-trader. Sequoyah was married to a Cherokee and was a silversmith. Because the white soldiers could read and write letters, Sequoyah became inspired to create a written and spoken language during War of 1812, and he taught it to his daughter Ayoka. Sequoyah was a very important figure in Cherokee life.

The Rio Grande Valley is a small place at the bottom of Texas, but it might be one of my favorite places. The reasons that the valley is my favorite place is because of my family, friends, and the culture.
