Being courageous does not mean not feeling fear, but rather facing that feeling and choosing to act upon it with dignity. Many characters from the book Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, portray acts of courage after being put into difficult and even dangerous situations. They did what they knew was right even if that meant letting go of what was familiar. Throughout the book Bean, Valentine Wiggin and Ender Wiggin are characters who stood out when it came to being courageous and showing bravery. In the book, Bean is introduced as being almost a replica of Ender Wiggin himself; he portrays the same qualities relating to intelligence and courageousness. Beans age puts him at a slight disadvantage though; he is smaller than the other soldiers, …show more content…
In the beginning of the book, the bond between Valentine and Ender is very strong, seeming to be unbreakable. So when someone tries to hurt one of them, the other is going to step in and protect him/her. In this case it was Valentine who was protecting Ender and herself from their unruly elder brother. Peter is known to have very bitter feelings towards Ender because he is a third, whereas Valentine is the total opposite, she cares for and loves Ender unconditionally. When Peter bullies Ender, Valentine is always there to step in and help him out. She is shown to be able to get Peter to stop bringing harm to Ender, and even shows no fear to his threats. In a conversation between Valentine and Peter, she states “Ender and I aren’t stupid. We scored as well as you did on everything. Better on some things. We’re all such wonderfully bright children. You’re not the smartest, Peter, you’re just the biggest.” (13). By Valentine standing up for herself and Ender and from Peter, she is being daring, showing courage and being a hero. She is facing her fear, the dangerous Peter, and standing up for what is right by keeping those that are close to her heart,
Overall I think Ender made a very brave
One reason why this is true is because Peter and Ender are working with two different commanders. Peter is commanding with. And Ender is commanding with Graff and soon became a commander himself. And then Ender has always been nicer than Peter especially to his sister Valentine. Ender views himself as an independent commander and doesn’t need any help from anyone else.
In “Ender’s Shadow,” Bean is a character who emerges from the shadows of Rotterdam, showcasing his exceptional intellect and strategic prowess. As the story unfolds, Bean’s journey from a street urchin to a key player in Battle School’s hierarchy highlights his remarkable growth and complex nature. Bean’s intellectual brilliance is evident throughout the novel. For instance, when he first arrived at Battle School, his keen observation skills allowed him to assess the situation: “Bean’s eyes darted around the room, taking in everything, evaluating everyone.” This quote demonstrates Bean’s ability to quickly analyze his surroundings and the people around him, showcasing his exceptional intellect.
Childhood innocence contains curiosity, imagination and a frail mind that has yet to experience the real world. A young boy, Ender Wiggin, goes through many things a child his age normally wouldn’t experience. As he grows up in Battle and Command School, his humanity slowly strips away due to being isolated and pressured to be the commander that the International Fleet needs. Though everyone benefit from the end result, things they did to win the war should not be excused.
Bean is a vastly determined young boy, all the way to the very end of his quest. In the great battle, he fights bravely against the Buggers and keeps his commanders together which would be unimaginable stress for anyone. Although, this four year old who is aware that this war is very real. When Colonel Graff asks why Bean does not freeze up during battle, “I don't freeze up because it isn't my battle. I'm helping. I'm watching. But I'm free. Because it's Ender's game” (Card 267). Bean shows his courageousness by allowing Ender to take the wheel, but agrees to keep Ender in check and makes sure he is doing everything right. To be able to confront the kind of stress it would take to do that, Bean would need limitless courage. Bean also represents humankind as he is battling the Buggers, being one of the brightest minds they have. Bean explains how desperate
Ender is more advanced than his whole class, despite being a Third (a social status level that is used as a derogatory term). Speculatively, this could be due to his involvement with the government or more likely (and a mentioned character), Valentine. Also, Ender seems to put on a gruff and tough exterior. However, when left to himself, he shows his soft side where he displays his true emotions.
Bean and Ender have many similarities that set them apart from their peers in times of peril. Their intelligence made them the most promising weapon in the war against the buggers, rating highest among the smartest children in the world. This is surprising on account of the dissimilarities of their lifestyles before they went to battle school. However, before and during battle school Bean and Ender had to cope with being small. Ender and Bean were both prodigies in their time, but ironically they had completely different personalities. The similarities Bean and Ender shared took them to the top, yet their differences gave them the skills that helped them defeat the buggers and
Ender isn’t exactly an average kid. He’s smarter than most and he has so much empathy, but this only makes him a bigger target to hit. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a book of questions. Readers will consistently find themselves wondering and making many hypotheses about what is happening next. Ender grew up with a tough life, he was always referred to as a “third” which was a very hurtful comment at this particular time.
Staying out of conformity by being a unique person, even if it means someone won’t like that person lets that person be an original person. When Ender, the main character from Ender’s Game, tries to be an average kid, he never lives up to his full potential. Valentine’s original voice is more powerful then sounding like someone else. When Ender realizes that Peter, his older brother, won’t accept him even if his is average, he strives to be himself.
“Human beings are free except when humanity needs them. Maybe humanity needs you. To do something. Maybe humanity needs me—to find out what you're good for” describes that each person has a purpose in society (23). In Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game, a young boy named Ender Wiggin is chosen to fight an alien race called “the buggers” because he has the greatest traits in order to become a successful military commander. Ender Wiggin is an innocent boy, whom everyone seems to have a problem with due to the fact they are jealous of him. He feels this is unfair and soon realizes what he does is beneficial to humanity. Ender Wiggin changes his view of things when he goes to battle school, he learns that every person really is a tool in society.
In the beginning of Ender’s game, we are introduced to Ender Wiggin. Ender Wiggin was a shy kid who was unaware of all of the possibilities he had. He starts to become a stronger more mature boy and soon enough realizes all the power he posses. He has an older brother named Peter, and an older sister named Valentine. He at first is this little, weak kid, and in five years goes from that to a mature leader of an army. We see him progress to the top of what he becomes, but it does not happen easily. He has to make many hard decisions that could go any which way.
Bean spent his days in the streets of Rotterdam surviving off pathetic rations and fearing death every time he inhaled. Ender dwelled in a nice house with a nice family that cared for one another. Ender was paranoid that his brother Peter would kill him when the time was right, a theory he held even after Peter came to him late at night and whispered in his ear, “Ender. . . I’m sorry, I’m your brother, I love you.” (Ender’s Game pg 15). Bean too had a family, but not like Ender’s. He lived in a place where everyone was starving, gangs ruled and even in a gang it was a risk to care for some one else; A risk that Bean, being as smart as he was, was unwilling to take. Bean’s life was all about survival, making a decision one day so he could wake up the next. The fact that Bean was genetically altered sets him apart from Ender, not to mention every other person at battle school. Their lifestyles were completely opposite, and it’s intriguing that their similarities took them to the same place.
Ender Wiggin was a timid boy who wanted to have his brother and parents to love him. Prior to joining the Battle School, Ender did not have the belligerence that he would soon possess. He did not want to be like Peter, so
This novel is about a brilliant military strategist, Ender Wiggin, whose story takes place in the future where there is a constant threat of an invasion from aliens who have been given the slanderous nickname, Bugger. Ender’s childhood is not an easy one considering he gets teased at school for being a “third” only to come home to an abusive brother who is always harassing Ender and his sister Valentine and he has the weight of the world on his shoulders because they believe that he is the last hope for mankind to fight off the Buggers. After many years of monitoring Ender the International Fleet decides they want to recruit Ender into Battle
Beowulf is a prime example of what it means to be courageous. In his fight with Grendel, he chooses “[n]o weapons, therefore, / for either this night: unarmed he shall face me / if face me he dares” (683-84). Beowulf has never encountered Grendel before. He has only heard the stories of the beast’s evil doings, so going into a fight with no protection requires great strength and bravery. Beowulf is the only man to dive into the waters to fight Grendel’s Mother. He goes into the fight believing “life doesn’t cost him a thought” (1536). The outcome of the battle does not faze Beowulf because a warrior should
