Valentina Acosta is someone I hope to continue to get to know better and hopefully keep in contact with after this summer. I met Valentina in the pre-college academic 2016 summer program at Columbia University. Despite being from different countries, I believe that we have really bonded and become good friends. Valentina comes from Madrid, Spain and although her life is very different than mine, we do have some similarities. As time went by in the program, Valentina and I bonded both outside and inside the classroom. We would help each other solve a math problem that we thought was difficult, and worked well together, sharing the work equally and challenging each other. I found that both Valentina and I have easygoing, but determined personalities, which enabled us to progress as much as we possibly could in this challenging program. After class, we would do our homework with each other, talk about our past experiences, and how life differs from New York to Madrid. Valentina says that although Madrid is a busy city, it is not nearly as chaotic as New York City is, and that the people are warm and welcoming. She finds that the people in New York are also generally very nice, but do not portray it to the same degree, and that it was an adjustment for her to learn …show more content…
She has one younger brother, about the same age as my younger sister, and lives with her mother and father. While Valentina told me how much she enjoys being in the United States, she hates to be away from her little brother, as he is one of her best friends. This really made me think about my own relationship with my little sister, Isabelle, and made me want to appreciate her more, even if she is sometimes annoying. I tried to comfort Valentina as much as I could, and tried to remind her that this is supposed to be a positive experience of learning more about what is surrounding you, and I think she was grateful for
The teachers bring their students together as they did a classroom exchange, so students can get a lot from each other and from the schools. Melanie, a smart girl who went to a Public high school, knew what she was capable of, and teachers also saw it in her that she would go off to college, but then she saw the other side which was the private school, while Jonathan also went to a Public school he did not see himself going to college and no teachers thought he would, and he ended up going to college. According to Chana Joffe-Walt, “you go through something to just get turned down there’s a waste to say would you’ve been better off not going to this experience” (“3 miles”). If Melanie would not have gone to the private school, which is the other side, she would have gone to college. As soon as she went to the private school, her way of thinking changed, and she saw herself not going to college anymore. Melanie thinks that she lost her opportunity of going to college just because she saw the other
Sweet, fun, smart, and spunky are just a few of the words that come to my mind when I think about Alyssa Tirado. Alyssa is an amazing cheerleader and has cheered since she was in 5th grade. She cheers for both the football team and basketball team. When she graduates high school, Alyssa plans on attending USF and becoming a radiologist. Alyssa likes to spend her free time at the beach, shopping, and with her boyfriend Daniel Marquina.

Louis Hémon creates a story of the rural life in a family of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, the Chapdelaine’s. He uses the climate and traditional values in a way in which the novel still has an ironic and crucial element. Also, the beginning of the novel on Ite, missa est[1] is (“the mass”) a claim on religious behaviour, a main theme in this novel. Maria Chapdelaine, a novel personifying the spirit of French Canada at its most romantic, was written by
Amy Chua is obviously very opinionated. There is a lot of controversy surrounding her memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, in which she was very harsh towards her daughters and made it clear that her parenting methods were better than those of a Western parent. There is no manual on parenting, but how do we know when we as parents cross the line between being concerned for our child’s future and being overbearing? Being a parent myself, I know firsthand that it gets frustrating and sometimes, that inner control can be lost. Amy demonstrated this challenge plenty of times. I acknowledge that Amy may have thought she was motivating her children to be strong, successful women but I don’t think she
There was a new language and new people. The first school there was to enroll there was no acceptance for a third grades with no knowledge of a six grader. The lower grades were in vacations, there was no way to get in the school as a third grader. The next school that was chosen was a temporary one; the wait for the normal one would affect studies. In the school everyone was kind even though the first day was confusing and getting lost was easy since the language was different. The office ladies knew how to speak Spanish and English. The first day in class everyone was nice, teachers were helpful even thought they didn’t know any other language other than

Music censorship is the prohibition or suppression of music that is considered politically unacceptable, obscene, or a threat to society. Music and music videos have been known to unnecessarily inappropriate. This has lead to a society that has gotten out of control. People are cursing and treating women badly because of the uncensored music. Censorship in the music industry is an easy way to make America a better place.
Getting up and moving to another city is hard, but Naomi Torres had to move to another country and learn a new language. Anyone can agree this is much harder. Naomi Torres was a young 12 year old girl when her life was flipped upside down. Her family that lived in New York at the time had to move to Puerto Rico, a beautiful island but a huge contrast of culture. The difficulty of moving from one state to another country, learning a new language, and getting to know the island are all difficulties that arose wither her move.

Gil (1985) describes the child protection system as sponsored and sanctioned by the Canadian government to protect and care for children in the event that families are unable to (Nixon et al., 2007). Hence, the role of child protection services is to investigate cases of maltreatment and provide services to ensure children’s safety and well-being. Although protection services offered by different jurisdictions of Canada are varied, the underlying key goal is child well-being (Nixon et al., 2007). A cross-country policy review in 2006 presented that although six of ten Canadian provinces and one territory included CEDV in their definition of maltreatment, they conceptualized the risk to children differently (Nixon et al., 2007). In this respect, Ontario had not defined CEDV as a form of maltreatment in its child welfare legislation (Child and Family Services Act) of 1990 (Nixon et al., 2007). However, the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (2006) incorporated CEDV as a form of emotional harm in its risk assessment tool (Nixon et al., 2007). This guides the child protection authorities in CEDV cases.
Observations for Jose took place on his science and math classrooms respectively. At the beginning of the class, the teacher asked a question to the group, Jose raised his hand to answer. He remained quiet on his desk while teacher explained the lesson in detail to the whole class. During the rest of the class, he remained seated on his desk and participated in the discussion at the proper time. The teacher showed a video to the class and asked some questions, most of the class tried to answer them, but Jose didn’t seem interested as he was with his head down on his arms. Next Day during the math period, students were working in small groups. Jose actively participated in the class discussion. He reviewed his paperwork with his peers and asked a few questions to the teacher’s assistant. Jose followed the teacher commands until the class finished. During the interview process, Jose mentioned that his favorite subjects were reading and science, conversely the subject that gives him most trouble is English because kids in the class laugh at him. Jose thinks that learning is natural for him and he can complete assigned works but doesn’t feel being as smart as the other students. When with his friends, he likes to hang out, play games and soccer. About his other classmates, he stated not getting along with them because they are always pushing or tickling him. Jose reported having no problems with the teachers or at school in general. On weekends, he usually enjoys of playing with
"At least once in your life you get the feeling that you don 't care about anyone, that life is just full of crappy people. But for some people, they begin to realize everyone 's beauty. Humans themselves are beautiful. Have you ever just looked at someone and actually paid attention to the little details about them? Every breath they take, the rise and fall of their chest, the way their eyes show every emotion they 're feeling? Well, for once in my life, I came to notice these things about people. I began to look at everything about them, learn more about them than about myself.
