“We are told to remember the idea, not the man because a man can fail. He can be caught. He can be killed and forgotten. But four hundred years later an idea can still change the world” (V For Vendetta). This quote comes from the movie V For Vendetta. In the movie V (Hugo Weaving) sets out to destroy the current government: the Fascist Norsefire party (“the party”) and ruled by the chancellor (John Hurt). Almost the entire world population have been destroyed by war, and the St. Mary's virus leaving very few people alive and taken care of. In the United Kingdom the Norsefire party control their people by gaining power from fear of the citizens. However, where does the watching of citizens stop? After September eleventh terrorism became an overused word to scare people into trusting the government more. Giving the government increased dominance over citizens. The Patriot Act says it allows surveillance against more crimes of terror but what does that really include? What considers you a criminal? In the movie V For Vendetta in someone was caught listening to music, reading a book or owning a piece of art they were arrested and/or killed. The United States thankfully does not do this but it was years before someone put a stop to Hitler and his Nazi Party. And the Nazi party dictated what people said or did for a long time before people started to question Hitlers acts. Hitler imprisoned or killed anyone who disagreed. Can you imagine what Hitler would be able to do if they had the technology of the 21st century? Moreover, Lofgren states “... the Deep State is so heavily entrenched, so well protected by surveillance, firepower, money and its ability to co-opt resistance that it is almost impervious to change” (Lofgren par. 21). Deep state meaning the war on terrorism. The war on terrorism has allowed the government to adsorb the power citizens posses. For example in V For Vendetta once the Norsefire party convinced citizens they needed to be the leaders of the new world, the Norsefire party gained access to controlling the way the world operated. Once they gained all the authority there was no way to take them out of power because they could of do whatever they wanted.
