Approaching an unknown frontier, I was suddenly surrounded by sprawling foliage and vast forestry. In the midst of towering trees, I walked down a dirt path longing to find my individuality. The rustling of leaves warned predators of my oncoming approach. I reached the swampland, filled with new layers of fresh algae and marsh. The surface does not budge like a Venus flytrap, mouth open waiting for its next victim. However, the most interesting thought is the peace and quietness that is so long forgotten in today's urban sprawl of the twenty first century. With the constant rushing of one place to another, one forgets the elegance that comes with the solitude of being in one's own company. The buzzing of dragonflies and mosquitoes awoke me …show more content…
I scan the timber and bog for new signs of life like a curious birdwatcher wading through the depths of the Amazon. My curiosity is suddenly sparked by a cluster of dragonflies. They are just a speck in the universe, yet so important. Following the ideologies of Thoreau, one must look at an object indirectly or through one’s peripheral vision to fully understand and contextualize the presence of its being. The dragonflies glide through the air like a flying squirrel prancing from tree to tree. With an unmistakable arrogance, they strive to fulfil their symbiotic role in nature and play their part in an unforgiving environment. Like many of us who are constantly striving to find ourself in today’s world, the dragonfly plays an important role. With eyesight as good as as a ravaging eagle hunting for its prey, a dragonfly’s carnivorous appetite rids the environment of mosquitoes as well as aphids, a type of tiny insect that destroys crops. This insect, which may seem negligible to some, greatly impacts our daily lives in more ways than some can even envision. This relationship sets off a complex domino effect and you never know which side you will end up on. Nor will you realize that the individual impact you will have on others depends on the decisions you make throughout your
Great green and yellow grasshoppers are everywhere in the tall grass, popping up like corn to sting the flesh, and tortoises crawl about on the red earth, going nowhere in plenty of time. Loneliness is an aspect of the land. All things in the plain are isolated; there is no confusion of objects in the eye, but one hill or one tree or one man. To look upon that landscape in the early morning, with
Across America a battle of morals rages over the death penalty. Like many other controversial issues that consume our society, the issue of the death penalty is not easily defined. Some people feel that one should reap what they sow. However, the issue is more complex than the eye for an eye standard. With the death penalty in place, our country is stumbling down a twisted path with numerous complications nationwide.
In this essay, “A literature of place”, Barry Lopez discusses the topic of how nature gives us reason and logic for everyday tasks. He claims that nature gives us new life lessons that most people don’t realize. Using his own views and research he describes how nature is a way of life and how it will change people's lives. Lopez talks about past experiences he had as a kid and uses them to persuade readers to go outside and explore the earth. Barry says that when people have an emotional connection with a placer that they will always remember that place. The place that they remember also remembers them spiritually forever. Which is a good thing for most people when they feel alone they can go to their place that they remember to feel close
Due to the popular advantages of living in suburban areas, the appropriate acknowledgement of the environmental issues correlated to urban sprawl are often neglected. Although urban sprawl accommodates many economic and financial benefits, the decrease in air quality caused by the increasing development of urban sprawl in Georgia said to be some of the most widespread in the nation. Located just 15 minutes outside the thriving city of Atlanta, Kennesaw Georgia is the fastest growing city in Cobb County. Home to Kennesaw State University, there are obvious concerns regarding the medical effects air pollution has on the student athletes of Kennesaw State who regularly practice outdoors. The colleges main sports stadium, the Fifth Third Bank Stadium,
I confess, I all too well know that living in the digital age, I have hindered my opportunities to immerse myself in nature like Henry David Thoreau. There is rarely a day that passes by that I do not use my cell phone or computer. Too often I forget that the outside world is more enigmatic and dynamic than anything that can be found on the computer or in the concrete jungle I enter when I go back home. I crave the mesmerizing and reflective space that nature has always provided since the dawn of time. Nature allows me to feel alone, but also become a part of something at the very same time. Thoreau beautifully claims, “We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all
Nature in its tranquility provides a calming sensation away from the buzzing city life. The ability
Haupt’s book, The Urban Bestiary, is a collection of creatures’ habits, tracks, identifying characteristics, and their histories. Overlaying each creature, whether treasured or considered a pest, is the reminder that we have to share our world with these animals. If we can live in harmony with them and learn to appreciate the value they bring to the earth, then we are better for it. Haupt says, “a new bestiary…helps us locate ourselves in nature, and suggests a response to this knowledge that will benefit both ourselves and the more-than-human world” (8). She does exactly what she set out to do, reminding us, “we can seek (sparrows’ and starlings’) eradication or reduction and still, on a daily basis appreciate their birdness, their feathers,
Since the Industrialization, cities attracted large amounts of labor force from rural to urban to engage in industries, which changed the structure of cities by increasing huge population. In addition, changing the structure of cities produces lots of problems, such as traffic congestion causes more serious air pollution, and insufficient housing problem; therefore, central cities began to extend the boundaries to desire better living environment to react the problems. However, urban sprawl is not the only one answer to solve the problems, and sprawling cities worse the problems. Thus, some ideas and critiques came out to analysis and solve sprawl, such as emerging smart growth and sustainable development to achieve a better living environment. Urban sprawl is not only affect the living style, such as commuting longer distance and time between workplace and home, but also influence our economic and government decision, for example, the costs of infrastructure in suburban is higher than the maintenance fee of existing infrastructure in city core. As a result, I want to know the history about sprawling, how sprawl affect cities, and how planners and people react to sprawl.
I ran out of the cabin for some fresh air after finishing my work. I love nature so I love my lonely cabin deep within the forest. Besides the dancing trees, annoying squirrels, and a babbling brook, I had privacy. I think the squirrels are out to kill me because they always throw acorns at me when I’m near them. In the deep wood that I called home, I’d spend hours daydreaming the day away. Hearing the wind singing would cure me from a contagious disease called life problems. Somedays, I would sit on a tree branch and play Flappy Bird. Up high is where you get the best Wifi connection. Whenever I was tired, I’d sit in the trees and take a quick catnap. The tree branches were my ladder to my peaceful solitude up high and the leaves were my pillow
In the novel “The Sun Also Rises”, Ernest Hemingway shows the effects of World War One on the “Lost Generation”, a generation of war veterans who live in a cyclical pattern of drinking, partying, and wandering, as well as a destroyed set of ideals from the war. Without their ideals of society, they live aimlessly and meaninglessly, mostly using alcohol to distract themselves from their problems. This constant sense of meaningless existence causes many of the characters to act irrationally, mostly due to their insecurities. Many of these veterans seem clueless, with the exception of Jake Barnes. Jake seems aware of hollowness of their lives, as well as the cruel actions that they take part in.
The trees fly by with red, yellow and orange leaves. I feel the brisk wind swirling my hair from right to left. I feel the rocks and pavement underneath my feet. I feel the strength in my thighs. As I run through the woods, I am alone with my thoughts, and I discover peace.
Coming back from school, I quickly gathered my homework given by the teachers of Dulles High School and sprinted out into nature – where the true source of life lies. After spreading out a blanket, I lied on my back squinting at the glaring sphere in the sky. A sense of tranquility exhumes from all the stress left in my body and soul. However, my sanctuary of final relaxation was interrupted by a swarm of mosquitoes hungry for my blood as I flew back indoors to safety.
Urban sprawl and its effects on local finances are a trending topic of investigation nowadays mainly because urban sprawl has been associated with negative consequences to the cost of providing public services. Carruthers and Ulfarsson (2003) affirm that urban sprawl is associated with higher providing cost of public goods because of the considerable levels of investment required to expand basic infrastructure and other public services over greater distances so as to reach relatively smaller number of residents.
The change in landscapes has been studied across a variety of scales in recent years due to the rapid population growth and urbanization process worldwide. Since 1950s, urban growth becomes prevalent in U.S., especially prominent in suburban and rural areas where the land use is featured by dispersed developments, single-functional, low density and auto-driven transportation (Ramalho, Hobbs, 2012). The expansion of impervious land generates a variety of urban sprawl patterns and raise many environmental concerns including air pollution, biodiversity degradation, coastal erosion, regional sea level rise and et al (Foley et al., 2005; Seto and Shepherd, 2009; Warner et al., 2010). Urban growth, which has been recognized as the indicator of economic
As I left behind the somber forest, I now recognized an appreciation for nature that I did not realize I had. I now knew there was more to nature than just trees and animals, but also I found the
