Urban Design
Urban Design means many things to different people, consequently the term is often misunderstood, and greatly misused. Urban design may loose some of it’s ambivalence if considered as a process to accomodate a changing environment. This process which emphasizes design possibilities rather than design finalities develops from consideration of long range needs and goals and the city’s character. The ends (the built enviroment) develop from the means, the cities decision making process. The city regulates and approves development, suggests development scenerioes, and various guidelines. By going through this process the character of the city is identified.
This report addresses many urban design issues effecting Grand City: this

Urban Form Urban form refers to the fiscal shape of the city as determined by landforms, by the concentration of construction, and the spaces surrounding the developed areas. Although the natural forms of the city can be altered very little we can do a great deal to affect their man made elements, such as leveling buildings, widening roads, etc.
Grand City MI has a distinctive urban form created by a concentrated business core. Five major East-West thoroughfares cross the inner city and two interstate highways intersects on the north side of town. Several national chains, that are Fortune 500 companies, have their national headquarters in Grand City. They are Montezuma Gold Inc., with assets of 1.5 million Rutgers Food Products, assets totalling two million Moss Services, over a billion in assets, and Jo Inc. with two and a half million in
The book Concepts of Urban Design by David Gosling and Barry Maitland has stated that, “History provides a large number of traditional urban forms which have survived the passage of time and which work to a greater or lesser degree. (Gosling & Maitland, 1984).” This statement provides some evidence to show that even professionals in the planning world recognise and base some urban designs on ‘traditional urban forms’. Examples of this range from
Economic factors are fundamental in determining urban structure. Cities can be seen as a form
Sustainability, a common vocab being used in design industry nowadays. It is mean to design something with a well consideration of improve environment, people and economic, which has become the fundamental aspect when comes to initiate the design thinking. According to Oxford Institute for sustainable development, the tools to measure and construct sustainable urban development are prejudicial focus on environmental and economic aspects. Most of the time, ecological and economical sustainability are well concerned but Social sustainable, which merely shown or mentioned on any press or architect’s forum. This essay will talk about the social sustainability in design, by defining the social sustainability in design, the key elements of the
The city was becoming an inhumane place to live and today present different view. We are experiencing the emergence of a new urbanism that, unlike traditional planning does not seek the satisfaction only, of the maximum economic efficiency of a city, where the flow of capital, selling cars, real estate speculation and manufacturing productivity are above the minimum human needs. The "New Urbanism" offers a balanced city, where economic, social and environmental are in the same plane of importance, where humans and their physiological and psychological needs are the starting point of urban planning. The New Urbanism simply proposes a human city; we might well call, planning of the city for the Humans.
The streets of ancient cities and today’s modern metropolis have changed the way people interact and live within the city. Although streets go unnoticed and their functions are taken for granted, they significantly impact our way of living in many modes that leave a lasting impression on the city’s urban plan.
Rowe in Collage City wrote a very condensed summary of the ideas developed within the Urban Design studio he taught at Cornell. He wrote about an autonomous apparatus containing formal strategies of typology,
“[unprecedented] urbanization has transformed the planet from 10 percent urban in 1990 to 50 percent urban in just two decades.” This emphasis on the dramatic development of urban areas further justifies the necessity of enhancements in the logic for mitigation efforts and developments. Resilient design measures shouldn’t be gaged as suggestions, rather requirements to ensure the safety of its inhabitants and to redevelop the crumbling environmental fabric that still
What is the one thing you can do to make a design of a city a place rich in architectural conditions? To answer this shortly, it is not just one thing, but a combination of architectural elements that make a design successful. To make a city rich in urban conditions, various elements have to be shown throughout the city. In my opinion, a well organized city, is a city well structured with a successful design. To form such successful design elements such as urban pattern and hierarchy need to be taken into considerations, in that way every single aspect of architecture included in the design of a city brings will bring it closer to a spatially rich urban condition. Following, I have listed the main key elements, including Hierarchy of objects, Urban Pattern, and Public Space, and the reasons why they are necessary for an urban conditions to accomplish it’s purpose of enriching a designed city.
Architecture is a way of expressing one’s vision to improve their daily lives. Correspondingly, the urban plan effect how society go about their lives and interact with each other. The manner in which the town is planned gives an idea the motivation and values of the town.
The modern urban space brought to the forefront the physical-functional aspects of cities and buildings.
What I have learned from this course was very interesting and important. The word urban means the relationship or characteristic of a city or town. My course has talked about a lot of things about urban cities, planning of the city, race, ethnicity, housing, education, crime and global development and much more. Urban planning is a technical method that use the land, safety of the residents, and use of the environment. The urban environment includes air, water, and transportation. Urban planning is important and crucial to any urban city because it is the guide that establish urbanization.
There is a movement among architects, city planners, designers and real estate developers that desire to return to a simpler way of living. A way of designing communities that at its essence captures the design traditions of years past while also avoiding some of the pitfalls of modern city development. A desire exists to avoid the prefabricated homes and endless urban sprawl of strip malls that have arisen all over the modern American landscape. Some see this as a return to classical traditions of city design that incorporates the rich architectural planning of traditional, small southern towns. For these people, the
Parametric urbanism is based on parametric design systems, in which the parameters of a particular object are declared, and not its geometry. The focus of interest is not the form itself, but the parameters which have generated them (Canuto, R. and Amorim, L., 2012). In this context, geometries with parameters are created to be related with all other design components, where any specific variation will lead to an adaptation response in the geometries forming the model. This will create a very dynamic and interactive urban planning solution, interconnected and related to all variables of the urban system, where each active variable changes through the system variations, and the current model generates changes in the urban proposal, without losing the consistency and integrity of the previous model (Pinto, G. et al., 2013).
It is of great importance to carry out researches in order to understand how kinetic architecture will affect urban planning. Kinetic design will provide planners with creative means for problem solving using technological advancements that facilitate decision making and collaboration between different interest groups during the process. Whether it is the continuing influence of Internet or new ways of using clean energy, a wide range of technological innovations will help shape cities of the future. If urban planners will consider events, activities and changes rather than buildings and structures, they can provide greater comfort and safety for all
