From Chicago’s 77 neighborhood areas, North Lawndale occupies 3rd for violent crime reports, in the past 30 days, being robbery the most frequent one, it ranks 20th for property crime, with thefts as the most common offense, and 4th for quality of life, with criminal damage being the highest one. As big plants and other factories moved out of the neighborhood, several liquor stores replaced the empty spaces and crime became the norm. The historic Sixth Street is in Austin, Texas' entertainment district part of the city's downtown section. This street provides the background for what has made Austin known to residents and visitors worldwide as the "Live Music Capital of the World." Most of the nightlife takes place in the area known as the "West Sixth" which is the stretch running west from Congress Street. Appreciate the Victorian style buildings in this registered historic part of town. The eastern part of Sixth Street between Congress and I-35, affectionately known as the "Dirty Sixth," is where you want to head for all the good bars, clubs, and music venues. The Dirty Sixth is also where many music and film festivals can be found. If you are looking for a non-stop good
North Lawndale is one of the 77 community areas in Chicago, located in the western area of the city between South Lawndale, Garfield Park, the Near West Side and Cicero (Steans Family Foundation, 2014).
Two neighborhoods in Chicago Such as Hyde Park and the West side of Chicago are very different but have a variety of similarities as well. The differences and similarities lies in the areas, the houses, the schools, political views, the food and basically the towns their self. Neither of the two neighborhoods is the best to live in but sure is not the worse. In the west side of Chicago, you see plenty of people standing around on the corners, theirs a lot of liquor stores and fast food restaurants. The crime rate in the West side is higher than Hyde parks that including the car thefts and burglaries. Don´t get me wrong both neighborhoods crime rate is high but i think the better of the two would be Hyde Park. Hyde Park is located on the shore of Lake Michigan seven miles of the south loop in the south side of Chicago. Hyde Park is also where the University of Chicago, The Museum of Science and Industry is.They also have a nice Art Center. Its a very diverse community while the West side is predominantly African American (Black). Both Neighborhoods are democratic areas. The houses in the West side are more closer together and they barely have any driveways mostly just allies and gang ways. The houses nice sizes with affordable rent. You can find plenty of cheap homes and rental properties there with ok living areas. They also have restaurants and convenient stores in the areas so if you don´t have a car or transportation its okay because im pretty sure you find something
To begin, the authors claim that the “the suburbs had not played a central or often even an explicit role in the historical analysis of southern politics and society since World War II”(p.692) Then, they claim that “The suburbs of the postwar South, however, were home to many of the most dynamic and cutting-edge forces anywhere in the region.”(p.693) Both authors also claim that the “insights of urban and suburban history provide a national frame work for interpreting the "long civil rights movement”(p.696), and that “The rapid growth of the suburban South has opened up many new possibilities for research” (p.701 third paragraph) Although this is not the final paragraph
The gentrification process can be seen through the demographic and physical changes of the South Parkdale neighborhood. Gentrification is “the invasion of working-class areas by the upper- and middle-classes, who upgrade shabby, modest housing into elegant residences, resulting in the displacement of all, or most of the original working-class occupiers”. (Lyons, 1996) South Parkdale is a neighborhood in downtown Toronto that faces problems of gentrification. This problem has been ongoing since the nineteen fifty’s’.
People that don't make the most such as middle class citizens are constantly pushed and involuntary forced out of their city because of gentrification. Gentrification is the process of renovating and the economic redevelopment from one culture to another using a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste. In Downtown Eastside gentrification has been occurring for the past years. In Vancouver DTES gentrification would be doing more harm than good. The effects gentrification would leave in Vancouver DTES are unimaginable. Leaving many homeless, in poverty, culture clashing and with struggles for the low income the middle class people earn. Vancouver is already known as “poorest postal code in Canada. How will the people survive this new modification being done to their beloved DTES?
Chicago is home to tons of historic wrestling moments. They hosted WrestleMania 2, 13, and 22. Washington Heights is a unique and ever changing neighborhood at the mezzo-level, but affects the macro and micro. It located in upper Manhattan that is north of Harlem and south of Inwood. Begins on 115th street, it is typically thought to end around Hillside Avenue. This neighborhood has the Hudson River on the west and the Harlem River to the east. New York City’s Community Planning has designated Washington Heights and Inwood as Manhattan Community District 12. These two communities are similar in their ethnic populations, make up the tip of the borough of Manhattan, and are often assessed by the government as one district. The 2003 New York City Community Health Profile reported that 270,677 people living in District 12 and “one in two
Uptown, Oklahoma City and its surrounding districts are becoming a very popular place to live but the city infrastructure is not keeping up with the constant increase in population. Uptown, Oklahoma City has varying cultural populations as well as
The neighborhood that I have picked for the fieldwork project is Uptown. It is north of Chicago; 6 miles away from the Loop, according to Encyclopedia of Chicago. Based on the map, Uptown’s boundaries are Foster Avenue (north), Lake Michigan (east), Montrose and Irving Park (south), and Ravenswood and Clark (west). The cross streets for the south side of Uptown are from Ravenswood to Clark, then Clark St. to Lake Michigan; from the west side, Foster to Montrose, then Montrose to Irving Park. North of Uptown is Edgewater, to the west of it is Lincoln Square, then to the south is Lake View (City of Chicago). As of 2010, Uptown’s total population is 56,362 (2010 United States Census).
Founded around the same time as Shippensburg itself, Orange Street has a local, but distinctive history. A diverse group of people, including African Americans, sites, and stories fills the street’s history. Along Orange Street, one of the three black neighborhoods is located between Fayette Street and Morris Street, known as Branch Creek. African Americans moved in the Locust Street Neighborhood at the same time when Shippensburg’s black population increased after the Civil War. Among the African Americans who moved into Shippensburg during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was Reverend Joseph Robinson, who later became a prominent member within the black community. Thirty years after Robinson moved into Shippensburg,
People always wonder why the City of Angels is different from other cities. This paper will answer this question and explain the uniqueness that makes L.A., “L.A.” Los Angeles, since its birth as an embryonic city, has become one of the most diverse metropolises, offering to the public what no other city can. This paper will emphasize the relationship between the federal government and the western United States. It will also illustrate how capitalism has flourished because of the prevalent 19th century Laissez Faire ideology. It will describe how the free market prevailed and expanded Los Angeles outward, while cultivating new public institutions and private enterprises.
Chicago in the 1920s was a turning point for the development of ethnic neighborhoods. After the opening of the first rail connection from New York to Chicago in the 1840s, immigration sky rocketed from that point on. Majority of the immigrants to Chicago were Europeans. The Irish, Italians, eastern European Jews, Germans, and Mexicans were among the most common ethnicities to reside in Chicago. These groups made up the greater part of Chicago. The sudden increase in immigration to Chicago in the 1920s soon led to an even further distinguished separation of ethnicities in neighborhoods. The overall development of these neighborhoods deeply impacted how Chicago is sectioned off nowadays. Without these ethnicities immigrating to Chicago
