Overview
LSDG, the new research and development group, need to upgrade their current client operating system desktops and laptops. They currently have 280 desktops and laptops that are running Windows 7 and 220 desktops and laptops that are running Windows XP. LSDG need a system that will run a Linux operating system and that will access and share resources with the Linx, LLC’s Microsoft Active Directory domain. The domain consists of several Windows Servers 2012 R2 servers that run various services as DNS, DHCP, web services, Microsoft Active Directory, printing and file sharing.
I believe the best operating system to migrate over to would be the Redhat/CentOS Linux Operating System. This system has features that sets them apart from all the other Linux distributions. It has advanced technology, simple installation, GUI administration tools, software packaging, and two desktop environments.The advanced Linux 3.10 kernel technology has updated security, easy installation, easy to manage the Global File Systems on Fedora. The packaging Redhat software created RPM package management method for Linux. When you are in the process of installing Linux you can choose what disk to partition and set your desktop to be GUI ready. The shell scripts also are contained in subdirectories or the /etc directory and will provide messages to you when services have started correctly or have failed to execute. Installing and configuring key services on Windows Server 2012 was a breeze thanks to its intuitive GUI. My favorite part of this lab was the feeling of control over the network from a single machine. Instead of switching to a different VM, I was able to simply switch to a different window. Windows Server 2012 made it easy to push changes across the network, allowing me to set up the same network configuration in far less time. Even working with only 7 VMs, I can clearly see why tools like Active Directory are all but necessary in a large enterprise network. Using a centralized controller like Windows Server 2012 would save hundreds of man-hours over time, increasing efficiency and profitability for the company. The church required that the workstations be replaced as they are no longer supported by the hardware manufacturer. The workstations operating Windows XP can no longer receive a software patch and are no longer supported by Microsoft. These workstation are extremely vulnerable to attack. Wireless connectivity through the church campus was a requirement as the church was to be able to access information from multiple locations. Setting up hardware to maintain and secure all data and information. The sponsor liked our team’s suggestion to migrate them from a peer to peer network environment to a server domain environment. With all of these upgrades and updates, network security needed to be addressed so the installation and setup of a firewall became a requirement. The
Twenty systems will initially be imaged for Linux and configured to run on the existing network environment. A testing group will be compiled from departments across the organization to determine how the operating system meets user needs in various departments. After a ten day testing period, any problems identified can be resolved as required to support a seamless transition. The phased migration can then be completed 50 systems at a time, cycling the Linux systems in and the XP systems out. As the XP systems are collected, Linux will be installed on them to continue with the phased concept. Diagram B displays how the systems will be tested, configured and distributed. The first OS we are going to look at is Linux, it can be a hard system to use and understand, if you have not used it before, you must have a good knowledge of computers in order to deal with Linux. Commands have to be typed in on the command line, and most people do not know or understand command line text. Linux does not have a great number of vendor selling their computer or software, so there is not a good support system for it.
During my research of Linux vendors, I have narrowed my options to three distinct vendors. I have found Red Hat, Novell, and Ubuntu were three of the best companies worldwide. Each vendor has their advantages and disadvantages. I will address the positive and negative points of each vendor. The main differences between the three vendors that I will discuss are cost, training & support, performance & reliability, and lastly availability.
Linux as of lately has widely improved in the management however since it mostly open source you need to know what codes and a form of programming to remotely use this so it is much more difficult than windows.

My teammates and I have been working on completing an upgrade of our software system since February of this year. The system in question is vital to our business, so we have planned accordingly to ensure that the process will be tested thoroughly and delivered as fast as possible. For the last five months we have operated without a target release date. The process has been difficult and we have encountered numerous issues along the way that have elongated the project. A couple of weeks ago, our team met to discuss the status of the project and work out a projected release window. We considered vacation time, the end of the fiscal quarter and our current status. Based on these factors we had one date that was deemed a stretch-goal and another date, a few weeks later, that was more comfortable and accounted for resolving any unknown issues.
