Genocide, Refugee Camps, and Suicide Bombers in Unwind Social and racial differences have all caused genocide, refugee camps, and suicide bombers to exist. And even though some rules are made to please two parties, some consequence can arise. This is what happened in the book written by Neal Shusterman named Unwind. The book takes place in the future were there is a civil war over abortion. To end the war, the Bill of Life is proposed and it requires for all babies to be born, but when the child grows up, the parents can choose to have him aborted for a greater purpose. Unwind may take place in the future, but the events are not too different from the past and present, where genocide,

Many Christians were displaced when Islamic forces invaded large Christian cities in Iraq. People from different social and religious backgrounds are at the camps. One thing the people all have in common is the loss of their homes. A priest, Father Douglas Bazi, stated that, “During the first week, the only thing I could hear was crying” (qtd. In “Inside The Refugee Camps Of Northern Iraq”). The refugees were devastated that their homes, and that even some peoples lives were taken away. The refugees do get medical attention for psychological conditions they may have. Experiencing the trauma they had experienced having their home taken away can cause psychological problems. The refugee camps in Iraq house people who have had their homes taken from them. Three characters from Shusterman's book come from refugee camps and then turn into clappers also known as suicide bombers. Levi lived his live as a lie, Blaine wanted to be like his brother, and Mai suffered the loss of her boyfriend. These characters all experience traumatizing lives and want the world to suffer too. They plan to bomb one of the unwinding facilities. They want to punish the people for the cruelty or unwinding. To become clappers, they inject triglyceride into their bloodstream. Once they are ready to detonate, they …show more content…
In Nigeria, a student detonated himself during a school assembly. Many students were killed and many more were injured. The student was part of a group called Boko Haram. The group has been recruiting young people. The suicide by the student was part of the violent campaign to get more people recruited for Boko Haram which does not like the Nigeria's school system. The group wants Islam to be prominent in peoples lives. The social issues between Nigerian schools and Boko Haram led to the suicide bomber detonating during
People were mistreated during WWII and were tortured in POW camps. Louie Zamperini, a character and a real person from the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, was in the army during WWII and had to go through the torture of being a prisoner at a camp in Japan. In the book Unbroken, Louie was going to be a famous Olympic runner until the Olympics were cut short when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and caused World War II to start. Louie drafted in the air force and crashed on a mission; he had to live on a raft for 47 days without any food or water. He was washed ashore on a Japanese island and became a prisoner of war. He then had to go through many painful experiences until the war ended September 2nd, 1945. Internees also had to go through harsh times during the war. Both POWs
What would you have done if you were stranded on a raft with two other men for 44 days with provisions to last less than 3 days? This is one of the easiest things Louie Zamperini had to endure in “Unbroken”, by Laura Hillenbrand. The most important thing to be learned from the life of Louis Zamperini is to never crack under pressure, because of his survival on a raft, how he withstood the cruelty of the bird, and how he survived through the torture of Japanese POW camps.
War is a state of armed conflict between different nations, states or groups (War). No one can think of a time when the United States has not been in a war because this nation is constantly fighting. The element of war is seen throughout the novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, it is seen throughout the movie as well. In Unbroken whenever planes went missing there were search planes to look for those them. In some unfortunate cases, “Search planes appear to have been more likely to go down themselves than find the men they were looking for” (Hillenbrand 91). During this time of war in the novel, if some of the
In the book, Unwind, by Neal Shusterman, the argument between Pro-life and Pro-choice reaches a point that leads America to a second civil war. This war was known as the “Heartland War” and it did not end with a clear winner. Instead, both sides agreed to a new law called “The Bill of Life” to make peace and end the war. The Bill of Life was a compromise between the pro-life and pro-choice factions that prevent abortion but also stated that human life will be preserved from the moment of pregnancy until the child reaches the age of thirteen. After age 13 and before age 18, the parent can choose to “Unwind” their children which means the child is sent to a “harvest camp” until their organs are harvested and given to people who need organ
Robert H. Schuller once stated, “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” In the novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie struggles with fitting in anywhere and staying out of trouble. He was constantly doing things to cause trouble and making mistakes. Pete, Louie’s brother pushes him to run to escape his troubles. Throughout Zamperini’s life, he gains perseverance which gave him the ability to survive through life.
Nowadays, phones have been glued to our hands. But how many people would be attracted to their phones if they know they are being tracked? Over the recent years as technology began to grow phones has been a big success. People are making calls, sending text messages, accessing the Internet , and sharing personal data.It doesn't matter whether your phone is a smartphone or whether you use it to make calls; as long as your phone is turned on, it registers its location with cell phone networks several times a minute, and all U.S. cell phone companies hold on to that data, some of them for years.
Redlining is the practice of denying services, either directly or through selectively raising prices, to residents of certain areas based on the racial or ethnic makeups of those areas (Wikipedia). Redlining refers to the actual act of drawing red lines on maps to denote where banks were not going to invest in because they are a liability to the bank. This leads into the term being used to describe the discrimination against other people normally due to race or sex. Redlining is a disgusting idea that reminds us of the old days of inequality and it is saddening that people discriminate against others because they have a different skin tone.
("Persecution of Christians in the contemporary world.") Young children are being kidnapped from Christian families in the Middle Eastern countries to be raised as Muslims. Children that have well enough memories to still believe their faith are put with their families and most likely killed. ( "Persecution of Christians in the contemporary world.") A recent story tells of two dozen Iraqi Christian refugees who escaped from the Middle East and across the U.S. borders. After coming into the U.S., they were refused any shelter or food; debates are being held if the refugees should be removed or not. The debate is held for the reason that there is not enough room for twenty-four people, but there is for ten-thousand Syrian
This breaks down to 15.2 million refugees, 26.4 million internally displaced persons and 895,000 asylum seekers. Countries that experience internal conflict and civil unrest produce the largest numbers of refugees. Afghanistan is the leading country of origin for refugees, followed by Iraq and Syria. All three countries are experiencing protracted violence. 80 percent of refugees flee to developing nations. The Salvation Army is committed to providing care for asylum seekers in Nauru and Manus Island regardless of politics or popularity. As an organisation they have provided care and support for the world’s vulnerable and suffering since 1865. Asylum seekers in the RPCs are facing uncertainty; they are isolated and incredibly vulnerable. As a Christian organisation, the Salvation Army are motivated by the love of Christ and passionate about helping vulnerable people. In Matthew 25:35-40 Jesus tells his disciples: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ In The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) Jesus tells the story of a man who is beaten and left for dead on the side of the road. A religious leader passes by and ignores him. The man is then found by a complete stranger – who also happens to be from a different religious group – who stops and helps tend to his injuries. The mandate of this parable is clear; that we are to care for the suffering, the vulnerable and hurting, regardless of who they might be. We are to be a neighbour to all.
This article was about the Nigerian school girls that were kidnapped by Boko Haram about two years ago. The author wrote about how the search for the girls isn’t over as well as how the girls rescues are being planned, but the military and government officials from America are afraid that if they attempt to rescue one group of the girls the other will suffer because of it. African officials are afraid that Boko Haram is making the school girls become suicide bombers or giving them the option to become suicide bombers to escape the lives they are facing. They believe that the girls are choosing to be suicide bombers to escape the lives of being trapped, used for childbearing and abused that they have been forced into.
In the novel Unwind, Neal Shusterman offers a unique perspective on the possible outcome of our society’s conflicts on ethical issues, especially directed towards the debate on abortion. The author shows the outcome of second civil war, in which the system of unwinding is born, a word hiding the harsh truth of dismembering children. This form of abortion proved to be the only way that would bring back peace to the country, however wrong in many ways and means of drastic measures it seemed to both the authorities and the public. The process of unwinding portrayed in the novel in biased and is not a realistic solution to the problems in today's society, only serving further issues and tensions in the nation. The author on purposefully
In 1981, a large suicide bombing occurred in Lebanon during a civil war between Christians and Muslims, which was known to be the world’s first largest suicide bombing to occur in mankind. Indeed, ever since that tragic experience the world has seen a rise of such tactics over the following decades. With the bombings that have occurred over time, researchers came up with the conclusion that most of these bombings are caused by adolescents. For instance, Patrick Markey asserts in a 2016 article that “Teenagers are easier to recruit for suicide missions (Markey, "Child Suicide-Bombings Increasingly Used in Militant Attacks", 2016)…” Due to this revelation many pose the question "What propels these youngsters to damage themselves as well as other people?" Well one would contend that the main thrust behind youthful suicide bombers would be the inspiration
Suicide bombing is an act in which an individual personally delivers explosives and detonates them to inflict the greatest possible damage, killing himself or herself in the process. Suicide bombings are really particularly shocking on account of indiscriminate nature, clearly intending to kill anyone within range of the explosion, the people being mostly unsuspecting civilians, all suicide bombings are linked to political causes and grievances. Many motives are cited for suicide bombings, from religious sanctification to revenge for Western foreign policy to hatred of
“dozens of massacres of civilians and the abduction of more than 500 women and girls in its five-year insurgency in Nigeria. When a suicide bomber dressed as a student infiltrated a high school in northern Nigeria on Monday and detonated explosives in a backpack,
Many individuals fail to understand the sheer magnitude of bloodshed, tribulation, and despair legalized abortion has initiated into the human experience – both in the United States and worldwide. Far more human lives have been violently ended by this immoral decision than any other war or genocide in history. It is one of the most controversial issues in today’s society. Abortion is the intentional decision to murder a human fetus by chemical, medical or surgical procedures. Those who support the rights of abortion argue that women should be able to decide what can be done to their bodies, yet the unborn baby inside a woman is a living being, and terminating that pregnancy is the equivalent of murder. These innocent children should not be held responsible for your mistakes. Don’t terminate pregnancy now, because you may not have children in the future at all.
