Unwind is a science fiction novel that is dealing with the fallout from The Second Civil War, also known as “The Heartland War”. This book is written by Neal Shusterman and is 335 pages of what happens after The Bill of Life is passed. The Heartland War was a long and gruesome fight over one topic, abortion. To cease the war, a constitutional amendment was passed known as The Bill of Life. The Bill of Life states that from conception to the age of thirteen that human life may not be touched. However, from the age of thirteen to eighteen, a parent can “abort” their child on one circumstance that their life does not “technically” end. The process by which a child is both aborted yet still technically alive is called unwinding. The main characters are three teenagers who are unwinds, Connor, Risa, and Lev. In Unwind, Connor and Risa changed from at first running away from the juvey cops, and being scared. But after their meeting with Sonia and sending a letter to their parents, they understood that they couldn’t hold on to the past. So Connor and Risa traveled to the graveyard where they met the admiral and Roland, (a troublemaker that ended up almost killing them) where they found their purpose in helping other unwinds turn eighteen. After all the interactions with the government, and Lev blowing up Happy Jack, Connor and Risa stand up against the government to try to stop unwinding forever.
One way I decided to connect the book by was connecting it to another book first. I connected it to the book The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey because of the strive for survival and the desperation from characters. Another connection that I made was this book to was society in general. I made this connection because people are always wanting to have the best of the best and in this book people take other’s body parts so they, themselves, can function better. Finally, the last connection I have made with this book is Unwind and the real life situation of abortion. Right now, abortion is a very controversial topic. The two sides are debating whether to give soon-to-be mothers the choice or force them to have the baby. This relates to the book because the book has many factors in it such as deciding to Unwind your child and storking. These connections to the book are some of many but they are also very
In the book, Unwind, by Neal Shusterman, the argument between Pro-life and Pro-choice reaches a point that leads America to a second civil war. This war was known as the “Heartland War” and it did not end with a clear winner. Instead, both sides agreed to a new law called “The Bill of Life” to make peace and end the war. The Bill of Life was a compromise between the pro-life and pro-choice factions that prevent abortion but also stated that human life will be preserved from the moment of pregnancy until the child reaches the age of thirteen. After age 13 and before age 18, the parent can choose to “Unwind” their children which means the child is sent to a “harvest camp” until their organs are harvested and given to people who need organ

The story in Unwind by Neal Shusterman happened after the Second Civil War. During that time period, all the kids who between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, their parents can sign an unwind order for them. For those kids who unwound, their bodies are used as machines by another people. However, the kid’s life doesn't technically end. Connor, Risa and Lev are three main characters in the novel. All of them are unwound by their parents for some reasons. Connor is a sixteen-year-old boy and get kicked out by several schools. His parents signed the unwind order because they did not think that they would be able to control him anymore. Risa is a fifteen-year-old girl, and a very skilled piano player. However, she was unwound because the orphanage thought that she had already reached her full potential. Lev is thirteen-year-old boy; the youngest kid in his family. He was unwound because of the religious believe of his family. All of them believe that they might have a chance to escape and survive if they work as a team. These three characters play an important role in this novel.
Unwind is a book filled with three main characters who are escaping their “fate” of being unwound. Unwinding is a process in which every part of a child between the ages thirteen to eighteen is removed and donated to others in need of a healthy limb or organ. Connor is one of the main characters, he found out that he was going to be unwound because he found a bill his parent’s paid to go to the Bahamas, without him. “Life is precious. Life is sacred. And it ought so to be observed” (Gordon B. Hinckley). Neil Shusterman wrote a book called Unwind and it shows how life is valuable to the people in that society because many teenagers, from ages thirteen to seventeen, are getting unwound. Unwinding was an idea to get rid of unwanted children, but not actually ending their lives. The idea was created to scare both sides so they would be reasonable during the war, but they had continued with the idea and the Bill of Life was signed. The outcome was when unwinding went into-effect, and the Heartland War ended. Unwinding was an iniquitous act to begin with, but it could not be stopped. The generation of teens in that society did not deserve it because they did
The movie I am reviewing is called: Trainsplotting. This movie was based on Mark Renton and his friend abusing heroin. Heroin was a part of their everyday life for example; they called it better than having sex. Mark Renton also explained how choosing a life was harder and that doing heron was much simple. He loved the feeling it gave him and thinks it is a lot better than having an organism.
When you think of unwinding, you probably imagine yourself sun tanning and drinking a martini on the beach. You probably see all of your worries disappear and paradise is very nearly near. In the breathtaking novel Unwind by Neal Shusterman, the teens of the world feel anything but relieved when they hear the word. Instead, they envision a world in which they no longer exist. At least, not in the way they used to. Unwind is a novel set in a dystopian society in a future time period, suffering the after effects of the Hartland War. The war was between the Pro-life and Pro-choice sides of society. A compromise was reached post war; it was called unwinding. Unwinding allowed teens to be harvested for all of their body parts. This novel tells the tale of three main teens who are to be sacrificed for unwinding. Risa, Connor and Lev struggle to stay out of sight until their 18th year when they will be considered free citizens. In Unwind, the story makes one question why a society would even consider something as radical and inhumane as unwinding. From it, we can connect to times in our own history when we made less than ideal compromises and evaluate the concept of unwinding as a whole.

In the book Flipped, from Bryce's perspective, it mentions, "All I ever wanted is for Juli Baker to leave me alone "(Van Draanen 1).
