Hi, Jamie thank you for the response I appreciate your empathy. I too have experienced several hair mistakes. In the past, I went to a hairstylist that was untrained in multicultural hair. I am a woman of color with very fine hair. Assumingly the hairstylist conveyed that my hair type could adapt to a chemical relaxer and or texturizer. Unfortunately, the head hairstylist was mistaken; I experience a chemical burn on my scalp with scabs all over my head. Next, my hair turned a red shade and then fell out. Sadly to it took me over a year restore my hair. Over the years I experience several inexperience hairstylists. So it is rare to find a quality professional stylist. When this occurred, I never spoke to the hairstylist to convey my disappointment.
I wanted to start of the event with this video. I made it a few weeks ago. When I started working on this project I really thought that this was a minority only problem and I wanted to focus on Hispanics because of my Colombian decent. I wanted to honor my roots while embracing my American life style. But it was Monday night, a slow day at a beautiful restaurant overlooking the ocean city somersault bridge and I was polishing glass for my side work and chit chatting with my coworkers. I was specifically talking to a co work. American. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. About 40 years old. I was telling her about my Tuesday plan that was handing out exit surveys at a polling location. She was confused. I said yes the primaries are tomorrow (this was Monday

For a large part of the twentieth century, interracial couples on TV shows were few and far between. Given that anti-miscegenation laws (the laws against inter-breeding of people considered to be of different racial types) remained on the books of U.S. states well into the 1960s, entertainment executives deemed mixed couples too controversial for television. And even now, in current times, the majority of current films presuppose the abnormality of interracial intimacy, leaving little room for alternate stories of harmony. Many of today's films instead poke fun at interracial relationships and depict solely the difficulties faced, the awkward encounters, and the negative effects of participating in one.

African American women's health, hair politics, and physical activities. Studies show that African American women tend to pay more attention to their hair instead of their health issues. Researches came up with a theoretical argument to figure out why hair matter for some women. They discover that hair presents a barrier to exercise in that the time and economic restrictions involved in maintaining a hairstyle post exercise for physical activity as prohibitive. This study provides some perception about the relationship between hair and health for African American women and suggests that extra attention is justified to address views about beauty ideals and hairstyles as a barrier to exercise (Versey, 2014, p. 2015)

“Dude you look so black!” the words exclaimed to me by one of my good friends when I walked into class with a fresh cut. The day before an important basketball game I went to the barbershop and decided that I wanted to try something different; something I never thought I would like until I really saw it. Walking out of the shop I was feeling confident and pretty swag if I do say so myself with a burst fade, which is a hairstyle that could be deemed “black.” This raised the question in my mind later: Well then what did I look like before?

The book does well with trying to unify everyone in the book by giving them colour in their hair. Although some of the students have blonde hair and others have black one thing that everyone has in common in the book is the streaks of colour in their hair. At first glance it seems as though everyone had been painting and had gotten the paint in their hair, however when you go through the entire book you realise that is not possible. It is evident that not only do the children have the colour in their hair, but so do their teachers and their parents. When Ling Sung is telling the reader about the talents he has at home we see an illustration of his younger sister and his mother, both of whom are never pictured at the school but both have the colour in their hair as well.
Black popular culture defined in the “The Repertoire of Black Popular Culture” is an arena of daily life in any culture that actualizes, engenders, operationalizes, or signifies pleasure, enjoyment, and amusement according to the beliefs, values, experiences, and social institutions of people of African descent in particular but also other racial groups in general (Nelson). Hair in black popular culture is prominent because the media defines what is “good” hair. The defining hair based off different grades of hair makes it seem that other types of hair are not good enough, nappy, and uncontrollable. In this paper I will address how hair effects the self-esteem of African Americans. I will also address different hair style that are a part of

There has been a notable amount of conversation on the internet on the rebirth of the natural hair movement. Cherise Luter (2014) states that despite afros and the natural hair movement not being a new concept (i.e. the Black Power Movement), it has gone under what she calls a “refreshing change”. Furthermore, what used to be “I’m black and I’m proud”, has been replaced with “I’m me and I’m proud” (Luter 2016). So, what is the natural hair movement? It is defined as a movement where black women decide to not conform to the social norms of chemically altering their hair and wearing it in its natural, kinky, or curled state (Joignot 2015). The movement could also be considered as an outlet for black women to display their racial and cultural pride or to articulate their “political position (Brown 2014:297). However, simply the terminology “movement” is something that should be shocking to many. There is a great amount of historical context behind the continuous influence Eurocentric beauty ideals have had on black women for centuries. According to Nadia Brown (2014), Black natural hair throughout history has proven to be recognized as “either unintended or intended personal and political statements” (298). the beauty standard in Western society which praises European hair textures, has influenced many black women to be critical of other black women who choose to chemically straighten their hair, accusing them of being subservient to the dominant and pervasive racist

The internet and social media give everyone their opportunity at the mic. People can hide behind their fake usernames and pretend they are 10 feet tall and bulletproof. The truth is, the people that have enough time on their hands to bash others are insecure and probably extremely unhappy in their own lives. It’s sad really.
