Today in America, we live in a country that honors freedom, and diversity. Over the past century, there have been many conflicts throughout the world due to nations differing views about important issues such as freedom, economics, and a need for power. As a new nation, the United States had to figure out where it stood and how it fit into the larger scheme of the world. As older countries who were closer to each other geographically fought over borders and religion and conflicting ideologies, America had an opportunity to align itself with established nations whose way of life matched closest to what we wanted to be. The modern world we live in today, has been shaped socially, economically, and culturally by past conflicts and wars, most
Oliver Kemper said, “The foundation of freedom is unity.” So if we want America to stay free, the first thing we need is unity. I believe in an America where we are unified as one.
The United States has faced many conflicts from the 18th century to the mid 20th century on the road to becoming the country it is today. Wars have been part of many conflicts that have broken out between the United States and various other powers during this time. The wars have cost many lives and allowed for the United States to rise to superpower status and stay a powerful nation in today’s world. But, the United States actions caused them to become part of many wars because they increased tensions between themselves and other countries causing war to be inevitable. The United States actions led to war by increasing tensions making war inevitable in many situations from the 18th century to the mid 20th century by the idea of imperialism,
There have been many wars in the United States, many of which have involved other countries, while very few were against the country itself. In the past, the United States did not always have 50 states and did not always share common ground. Today, the United States consists of 50 states and very much of the country shares common ground. While the country has learned to agree on various matters, it still has not figured out how to come together as one. This country has been through many economic, political, cultural and religious changes that have led to wars, and successions.
The United States of America is a perfect example of cultural diversity. Starting with the Mayflower landing in Massachusetts Bay in 1620, to the Great Migration from 1915 to 1930, to the continual immigration into our country today this country has seen its culture grow and reshape itself over the years. The culture of the United States is diverse but understanding and appreciating various cultures does not always exist within today’s classroom or in today’s society. Understanding or even defining cultural diversity , identifying the challenges cultural diversity brings, or how to face cultural diversity are all issues educators face in today’s classroom.
The mass medium I have chosen to critique is a new television show called This Is Us and it airs on the NBC channel. This Is Us is a show about a family with triplets and they show how they handle all the different parts of their lives. This particular mass medium addresses many of the different current issues going on in today’s society including; race, diversity, education, religion, and politics. This Is Us addresses diversity in today’s society and portrays many different types of people within this one television show. To prove that this mass medium portrays diversity I will look into how this show illustrates race, different social stances, and different educational backgrounds both positively and negatively. Also, to better the credibility
According to Wood (2004), diversity is America's newest cultural ideal. Furthermore, the author argued that diversity sprawls across politics, law, education, business, entertainment, personal aspiration, religion, and the arts, as an encompassing claim about human identity. Under these conditions, 21st Century organizations are shifting their recruitment and hiring policy to create a diverse workforce. Likewise, universities are instituting new admissions rules to establish a diverse student body. The importance of diversity has many roles and effects. For example, diversity can improve productivity, create innovation, enhance robustness, produce collective knowledge, and perhaps most important, sustain further diversity (Page, 2011,
The United States population continues to increase in racial and ethnic diversity, therefore, it is pertinent that mental health professionals tailor their services to the needs of various cultural populations (Constantine, Kindaichi, Arorash, Donnelly, & Jung, 2002). The awareness that ethnic minorities experience negative consequences from being oppressed, resulted in the multicultural competence pedagogy and has helped counselors identify effective strategies to generate social change (Hage, 2003; Vera & Speight, 2003). Social norms that cause these injustices are identified, allowing for ethnic minorities to constitute and embrace empowerment. Moreover, this consciousness helps prevent therapists own bias’ from playing
The presence of Latinos in the United States challenges the notion of there being only one specific type of American citizen, an English-speaking person who lives only in relation to an "Anglo" heritage. Alongside other minority groups, Latinos tend to believe in the notion that the United States must be made up of one bounded territory, within which people speak a singular language and experience one culture. So, when the Anglo groups are faced with Spanish speaking people who are in touch with their Latino heritage, they feel threatened by the people who can speak both Spanish and English. The response to this sense of threat involves marginalization and the obvious exclusion of Latino groups in the United States. At the
Throughout the world social problems such as illiterate, elderly, handicapped, minority groups, and poverty have been the biggest part in our society for many years. Some of our social problems had died off, meanwhile, they’re still many problem that we are still facing as a society. One of the major social problem we face is people being illiterate. Being illiterate is meaning a person can not read nor write, and it can also mean that a person is grammatically incorrect. There is as much as 23% of the adult population that are ignorant to basic skills of the 4th grade level. In the U.S. the ethnic group that is most affected by not being able to read or write is
“Diversity is about all of us.” Diversity is what joins us all together as a whole. It is what makes up the world. It can have a positive effect on a group.
Something that I learned in this course that I saw in the video is that these people are mentally strong in the face of adversity in America. For example, although the man named Joseph, who has been laid out from work several times, his kitchen was set on fire, stabbed, and hit by a car, his response was surprisingly dull. There's also a guy who has trouble sleeping because of nightmares. However, compared to the things they've been through before going to America, things like that were probably really upsetting at most but not enough to shake them as survivors that has seen and experienced much more than that. For me as well, what stood out as significant is when Joseph videoconferencing with his mother who both thought they were dead and
The first colonists that founded our country were dominated by white folks. In today’s America , there are too many cultures to name. Diversity is essential to our nation’s society. Diversity is essential for our country being what it is known for today. While some people believe that uniformity and conformity are encouraged more, it can be argued that diversity and individuality are encouraged because people resist assimilation and people are encouraged for their differences.
Diversity is an important element of the United States of America, but also has been a topic debated over for many years. The arrival of immigrants in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century created many problems with how to deal with new cultures and naturalization of citizens of different races. These immigrants faced much adversity in the process of gaining citizenship due to racial qualifications for naturalization and fitting into separate race categories. Since white was the superior race in the United States, immigrants fought to prove their qualifications to fit into the “white” category in many ways. Throughout these struggles, the idea of race was socially constructed by the Court during important naturalization
United States is the most diverse country I know and the future looks like diversity is
The information that I have learned about diversity in the United States of America has helped me better understand and relate to others in many ways. The world is full of different people and ethnicity, race, creative individuals. Each race has issues to deal with rather it be prejudice and racism. Also during my time in this course I have learned a great deal about myself and I learned how to show more respect to other cultures, I already understood some of the cultures and races we studied this course but to get a better understanding and having to additional research really gave me an open mind and point of view what everyone deals with.
