Beliefs are steeped in our past histories, habits and traditions, and are thus constrained by individual experiences and not as adaptable to new situations. Alternatively, if you use values to make decisions, those decisions will align with the future you want to experience. Values transcend both contexts and experiences. Therefore, they can be used for making tough decisions in complex situations that have not yet been experienced. As a result, values provide a more flexible mode of decision-making than beliefs.

When employees not only share similar values – but also a similar vision – the performance of a company is enhanced. Shared values build trust. Trust is the foundation on which relationships are established, both with team members and customers alike. Values-based leadership is a way of making authentic decisions that build the trust and commitment of employees and customers.

Values-based leadership has a significant impact on the performance and the functioning of an organization. Boje,(2000) cites Burn’s (1978) theoretical work on transformational leadership basing his argument on Kohlberg’s moral development theory and Weber’s (1947) theory of leadership and authority. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the extent to which leaders make use of visions and values in the accomplishment of their everyday leadership. There is a plethora of material available on the subjects of leadership vision and values. Vision has a several definitions, most of which tends to infer a mental picture or direction in which the leader wants to take an organization. Values are the intrinsic drivers that motivate a leader to act in accordance to what he believes and are used to drive his or her decisions. “Values are the essence of who we are as human beings. Our values help us select the work we do, the company we keep, the relationships we build, and ultimately, the groups and organizations that we lead. Our values influence every decision and move we make, even to the point of how we choose to make our decisions.” This paper will give the reader more insight on most leaders rely more on their values, rather than a defined personal or corporate vision.
Values are those things that are important, meaningful and valued by an individual, a group of people, or an organization. Whether we are aware of them or not, every individual has his or her core set of values, which consist of many different kinds of values. Each individual’s value system is different from one another because individual’s values are built up through one’s life experience, environment, and family background. Values are important to us because they reflect our personal moral standards, shape our behavior, and guide us through long life journeys. Since we live in a highly connected society, each person’s value system does not only affect one’s own life, but also affects many other people and the
An essential component of leadership is to articulate and exemplify the organization's core values. These values must be clear, compelling, and repeated. The leader must both "walk the talk" and inspire his/her colleagues within the organization to also live these values. Values are at the core of individual, group or organizational identity. Values are relatively enduring conceptions or judgments about what is considered to be important to an organization. Agreement between personal and organizational values result in shared values which constitute the benchmarking of a successful business practice.
Business leaders have an important role within an organization related to its success, productivity, and the performance of the employees. Because values play such an important role in our lives, being able to recognize and understand one’s own values can become essential in decision making. Furthermore, having the ability to identify an employer’s corporate values will also help. However, when individuals understand the genuine and meaningful connection that exists between his or her personal values with those of the employers, a strong connection is then created. This connection forms countless opportunities and possibilities for
Business values and ethics differ with every company. They are formed by the behaviors and good ethics that is required in a professional environment.
A point that was prominent from beginning of the course, was the importance of value based management. One of the common misconceptions about business leaders is that their sole concern is for money. While for many, ensuring profit is a high priority, it is beneficial to note that other aspects come into play when decisions are made. In addition to profit, successful companies often dedicate themselves to a specific set of core values. These values highlight what a company believes, what they find important, and how they define success. Ed Freeman said, “companies should seek to align interests of all primary stakeholders.” Based on this it is clear that business decisions should not only consider only should the owners and employees, but also the customers, shareholders, and surrounding community. Furthermore, the definition of an effective business leader does not necessarily only involve positive numbers. Along with this, success for one company
A great leader begins with self leadership. It can be impossible to understand others if you don’t understand yourself. A Level Three Leader must first recognize their own VABEs (values, assumptions, beliefs, and expectations) before focusing on others. This is essential for a leader to create a high performing team. Each level of leadership has its strengths and weaknesses but as a leader, one must know the right time to implement each level. However, human behavior can play a role in determining when to use one, two, or all three levels of leadership. The four cornerstones also play a huge part in the success of a leader. The leaders morals are important in building a foundation for a team. Clawson (2011) stated “One of the most direct ways of motivating and directing employees, and therefore to develop Level Three Leadership skills, is to build one’s leadership attempts on the moral rock, consistently telling the truth, keeping promises, and
