Unethical Influence Tactics To be an effective leader, one must have specific influence tactics while influencing others positively. This means having the ability to change the attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and values of others (Community Tool Box, 2015). Unfortunately, unethical influence tactics can hurt organizations and others. These tactics are deliberate, intimidating, threatening, manipulative, and dishonest. Therefore, individuals that use this type of leadership style will have serious consequences professionally and it poses a significant risk to the organization. Rod Blagojevich will forever be known for his attempt to sell the Senate seat, which was vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. Rod Blagojevich was born in Chicago …show more content…
Manipulation also uses fear to influence others. Leaders that manipulate others are misleading in their actions and intent, usually having hidden agendas. They use others like a puppet and benefit from their actions. Rod Blagojevich used Tony Rezko to use his power to extort money from businesses. Rod Blagojevich used other unethical tactics such as, intimidation and dishonesty during this time as governor. Therefore, this lead to an investigation and indictment of criminal corruption charges for abuse of power, where he was sentenced to 14 years in prison. As a leader, I would have used ethical tactics instead. The first approach would be to treat individuals with dignity and respect instead of threatening individuals to achieve personal goals. An ethical leader respects their follower’s feelings, decisions, and values, by listening to their opinions and viewpoints (MSG, 2013). In a political position, the individual is elected to serve others and to represent the people that elected them into that position. Instead of taking bribes, this position is about serving the people and working hard to improve the well-being of others and the community. Being fair and just and treating all followers as equals where there is no personal bias. Honesty is also essential in this role. As a governor, citizens depend on honesty at all times regardless of the situation or circumstance (MSG,
In William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth", manipulation is a very effective device. The main character Macbeth is a puppet controlled by the words coming from the three witches and Lady Macbeth. The four troublemakers provide Macbeth with the motivation and confidence he needs to kill Duncan and perform other dark actions. Macbeth is very ambitious; there’s no doubt about this. However, there is no sign of him changing from a loyal man to a power hungry man. That is until outside influences begin to interfere with his life. The people with the greatest impact on Macbeth are his wife, Lady Macbeth and the witches. However, he then learns to manipulate others himself. In the end, all the treachery is revealed and he realizes
Rod Blagojevich was at the height of his political career in 2008, he was seating in his second gubernatorial term as the Governor of Illinois. Before his was the Governor he was elected to the Illinois House of Representative in 1992 and then won the US House Seat for Illinois in 1996. All of this was nice for the ascetic view of his political resume, but behind the veil he was a “devious, cynical, crass and corrupt politician”. He wouldn’t for anything to get what he wanted and the people that he wanted in the seats around him. This view began all the way back in 1992 and it only picked up speed from there.
He participated in criminal acts of graft and voting fraud, but he also did lots of good for the city he governed. A quote from a print published by him says, “I served the organization and made more big improvements for New York City than any other livin’ man” (Plunkitt). Even though the graft was illegal and could cause harm, Plunkitt only committed an honest graft for the improvement of New York City. As a result, he improved New York City more than any other person did. He did not graft for power or money.
The contingency theory (Browning, 2007, p. 190) suggests that leader’s effectiveness depends on how well the leader’s style fits the context. This means effective leaders in this era have the ability to distill their complex messages into accessible ones. In other words, an effective leader is aware of his/ her client’s informational needs and values and thus, creates information to suit their needs. Therefore, leaders tend to regulate and control expressive activity in and around the workplace from legal, managerial, and ethical perspectives (Barry B, 2007). This trend tends to work for organizations that try to cover massive change by creating as little impact on their employees as possible without doing anything ethically wrong in their business.
Since Huey Long was an intimated man, he jeopardy his way to become a great governor as he could have been. Jeansonne argues that Long always put his own interests first (xii). Indeed, he states, Huey Long who did not play by the rules (6). By him placing himself first, one could state that Long has crude manners and domineering personality which creates a bad message. For instance, Huey would snatch food from friends and strangers and devour them (61). A man like Long abuses his power to achieve what he desires to get elected as governor.

Leadership is critical and it refers to the process of influencing followers towards achieving the groups’ goals. Toxic leadership refers to the leadership offered by leaders who abuse power and leave the group they lead in a poorer condition after they are left. Toxic leadership is associated with incompetence, insularity, evil, intemperance (lack of self control), callousness, rigidity and corruption among other bad leadership characters. The leaders involved in toxic leadership are not concerned about uplifting the people they lead (followers). Instead, they make sure they satisfy their self interests. They fight and control instead of caring for their followers. In most cases, the leaders with this leadership style are leaders who bully, abuse, and discriminate the subordinates. In addition, they create a hostile climate, self serving and arrogant, threaten and even yell at their followers among other fierce characters. They do not lead based on their qualifications. However, they apply force to be in leadership positions thus making the lives of their followers a misery . They are selfish in that they work to promote themselves without regard to the welfare of their followers. In most cases, do this by not minding about the future of their group and its members. This paper explores the effects of toxic leadership in the United States.
Manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the behavior or perception of others through abusive, deceptive, or underhanded tactics in other words brainwashed. I society can be brainwashed by simple rules and media things like that. The book “1984” can be compared to the short story Harrison Bergeron by manipulation of society. The societies are manipulated in multiple ways through the use of technology, propaganda, and manipulated into believing that they live in the perfect world. In George Orwell’s novel the theme can be compared through the dystopian society and contrasted through the use of technology and propaganda by manipulation of society to Kurt Vonnegut’s short story Harrison Bergeron.
Manipulation can serve as a very impressive social tool in order to bend someone's will to fulfill your agenda and trick them into carrying out a specific action. To manipulate is to manage or influence skillfully, especially in an unfair manner. This is prevalent in the tragic play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth, an ambitious general, is manipulated by both his wife and three witches to commit heinous crimes. The witches manipulate Macbeth by using his faith in the supernatural to force him to carry out certain actions. As well, they present him with deceiving prophecies to give him false confidence. Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth by questioning his manhood
There’s has been people who either have been manipulated and then there’s people that have manipulated people. Being experienced with situation can make it easy for one to manipulate anyone. For example in “The Crucible” it demonstrates how one young child can manipulate everyone from children to an adult into believing her vengeance story. With the right situation experience one can manipulate with ease, but it shouldn’t be easy for one to manipulate half of the people in the town.
Manipulation is a very puissant term. It is usually viewed in a negative sense by its definition of skillfully handling or controlling someone or something. Manipulation is a scheme used by people everyday to achieve their goals. It is an attempt to cunningly outwit another to gain personal advantage. In order to outwit the other person, people tend to exploit the person's weakness, which generates more situations favouring them. In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible and Shakespeare's Othello, the villains, or in other terms, manipulators, Abigail Williams and Iago illustrate the essence of manipulation. Both characters take advantage of their state or situation and skillfully turn others into puppets which later goes on to having a huge impact on the fate other characters.
The power of manipulation is a very powerful tool and can easily be misused to benefit
In the past, the term “authentic leadership” is used to define ethical leadership. Researches examine authentic leadership as an attempt to discover more about ethical leadership. Researchers argue that authentic leadership is concerned with self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective, and balanced processing (Gardner et al., 2005; Walumbwa et al., 2008). Although Authenticity is an important aspect of ethical leadership and the above definition creates a good list of behaviors, it doesn’t solely define all aspects of ethical leadership. It has also been argued that Influence processes used by leaders are driven by the underlying ethical values (Groves et al., 2011). Therefore, another approach to inspect ethical intent would be to examine the influence process used by leaders. Since leader’s influence processes are very much linked to her leadership styles, it’s appropriate to look at some leadership styles and the compatible influence processes.
Manipulation is getting what you want by ignoring or harming the desires of others. Manipulators use charm, persuasion, coaxing, trickery, and misdirection. The underlying idea is "I have to fool people to make them give me what I want." We can catch ourselves falling into this behavior when you aren 't listening to other people, when you ignore what they want and when you pretend that your desires cost nobody else a price. There are also
The coercive style can be summed up in three words: "Just do it!" While this approach has its uses, research has repeatedly shown that the coercive style is best used as part of a balanced blend of at least five other leadership styles: "visionary" or "authoritative," "affiliative," "democratic," "pacesetting" and
