This paper examines the impact of unemployment on graduate school enrollment. Using repeated cross-section data on graduate school enrollment from the Current Population Survey and statewide unemployment rate from Bureau of Labor Statistics, I find that female graduate school enrollment will decrease when the unemployment rate increase while the male graduate school enrollment will increase when the unemployment increase. Female students are less likely to enroll a full-time graduate program as the increase of the unemployment rate. Male students with high GPA are more likely to enroll in graduate school when the unemployment rate increases, and there is no evidence the condition of labor market response for low GPA students.
