Understanding Social Perception & Managing Diversity
Perception can and is influenced by a number of different things whether from the things that is read, seen on television, or simply from what we retain from family and friends. The way that perception is interpreted determines how we perceive people or our surrounding. Steve Harvey film and book Act like a Lady Think like a Man elaborates on how the perception between genders, as well as the diversity that distinguishes the communication barriers between men and women and helps to break down that barrier. In the text Organizational Dynamics and Human Behavior (second edition) major component of social perception and the Kelley’s Model of Attribution are reflected in Act like a

Performance appraisal determines good versus poor performance through motivation and commitment and loyalty. Act like a Lady Think like a Man, Kristin realized that her boyfriend the non committer of nine years wasn’t willing to go to the next phase of their lives because she didn’t require anything from him so he displayed no willingness to want more. Leadership is when you lead by example. Kristin then began to make changes by encouraging him to want to apply for a better job and by just simply change the environment of their home through redecorating.
Act like a Lady Think like a Man indicated that a woman can find all kinds of deficiencies in themselves-"I didn't do this right," "I wasn't good enough," "I didn't love him the way I should," "she came in here and outperformed me” (Harvey). Women need to reframe from placing the blame of the man's actions on themselves. By holding on to that weight can be hindering for future encounters. Steve Harvey said, “You simply cannot drive forward if you're focused on what's happening in the rearview mirror.” Causal attributions is constantly formulating cause and affect explanations for our own and others behavior (kinicki, 2009, pg.68).
Kelley’s Model of Attributions proposes that behavior can be attributed either to internal factors within a person or external factors within the environment (kinicki, 2009, pg.69). Consensus involves a caparison of an individual’s behavior with that of his or her peers.
I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.
The Fundamental Attribution Error occurs when a person’s personality is determined based on how they act in a certain situation, but not including the situation and outside influences when making that determination. The individual could be acting a certain way based on the particular situation or social circumstances, but in all actuality be completely different in another situation. Studies show that in most cases socially we want to fit in with a group, don’t want to be different, don’t want to be wrong, and in many instances act different than what our typical personality and values are based on influencing social factors. One of the main factors that often contributes to how we act in certain situations is to obey those in authority positions. The studies provided below are examples of the show how behaviors can change based on social factors.
Grand Canyon University is a Christian college that has been operating for over 65 years. Since their founding in 1949, they have maintained their biblical mission to promote Baptist values. Today, they are an interdenominational university that welcomes all students. Although they identity as a Christian university and maintain their foundational convictions, they focus on establishing an accepting missional community. That is, they cultivate people who are united in carrying out strategic missions and projects for the good of the community. Christine doctrines are essential, so they are committed to the foundational Baptist beliefs that distinguish it from other worldviews.
Combining the concepts of the Fundamental Attribution Error and the Actor-Observer Bias, when we predict others' behavior, we are likely to overestimate the role of dispositional causes. When we predict our own behaviors, we are likely to see our behaviors are caused by situational factors.
error this says that people make more dispositional attributions for others behaviour when we see
“I am the Joker,” muttered James Eagan Holmes. The last words the victims heard the night Holmes committed mass murder in the Century 16 movie theatre still haunt the living victims and countless other citizens of Aurora, Colorado. It is compelling how someone attempted to rationalize his actions with such an elementary phrase, which once had no meaning at all. The claim seems nonsensical and slightly amusing solely because he is implying he committed the crime on the basis that he is the arch nemesis of famous comic hero, Batman. Statements like these alone do not make an intriguing court trial. The men and women sitting on the jury for weeks on end need entertainment just to stay conscience enough to finish the trial.
After retirement a good percentage of retirees still need to work or would like to work (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). An awareness of the older worker’s developmental and social challenges are important for understanding post career decisions (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Usually older workers are in Erikson’s developmental stages of generativity versus stagnation or integrity versus despair (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Older workers, after retirement, may find it difficult to maintain involvement in things such as social contact with co-workers which may loose appeal over time (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Other concepts with this group include mental and physical capabilities and social attitudes about the aging worker (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Maintaining
Societies today are highly affected by the way people are believed to act. Gender roles are created by society, and they are a way to define how a gender should or shouldn't act. In “Answers” by George Singleton, there is a husband and wife thinking about getting divorced, and they begin answering questions in a book, and realize that the other turned out to be less manly or trustworthy, than they believed to be. In “Public Relations” by George Singleton, a man and his wife are out eating with his boss and his wife. While eating he gets fired for talking about how women should act, and how they will amount to nothing without an education. In both of these stories, men and women act differently than the stereotypes put on them by their
Businesses have explored different avenues regarding three expansive ways to deal with advancing diversity. A few projects are intended to build up hierarchical duty regarding diversity, others to direct administrative predisposition through training and criticism, and still others to diminish the social confinement of ladies and minority specialists. These methodologies discover bolster in scholarly hypotheses of how associations accomplish objectives, how stereotyping shapes contracting what's more, promotion, and how arranges impact professions. This is the primary methodical examination of their viability. The investigations depend on government information portraying the workforces of 708 private area foundations from 1971 to 2002, combined
Cecilia Ridgway, in “Framed by Gender: How Gender Inequality Persists in the Modern World,” holds that gender exists as an organizing social force. We value certain stereotypes of how people of a certain gender should act and incorporate these expectations into our social relations. Men, Ridgeway explains, are typically viewed as having more “competence, assertiveness, confidence, independence, forcefulness, and dominance” (Ridgeway, 2011) in social relations. Women, on the other hand, are viewed as valuing “emotional expressiveness, nurturance, interpersonal sensitivity, kindness, and responsiveness” (Ridgeway, 2011). According to Ridgeway, these gender stereotypes are
The diversity I have experienced during my childhood has best prepared me for life in the real world. I have attended an expensive private school with the children of senators, CEOs, and millionaires. I have lived in a two-bedroom condo with my single mother, two siblings and dog. I have worked jobs for as long as I was legally able to. I currently attend a public high school with people from all walks of life and different socioeconomic levels. I was raised to believe that your background does not define you – your character does.
As companies become more diverse in the work field employees are getting harder to manage and understand. One issue in the global market today is workplace diversity. Workplace diversity is defined as all characteristics and experiences that defined each employee as individuals, but it can also be misunderstood as discrimination against employees. Diversity can include race, ethnicity, sex, religion, disability and sexual orientation discrimination. One reason why workplace diversity is important is because when you respect your employees productivity rate rises and many companies do not know that. A diverse workplace targets to create an inclusive culture that values and uses the talents of all employees.
Furthermore, the power of context is the things in the environment can change people’s behaviors. This will let them know what kinds of actions are properly doing at what time. Lofferda proposes that some higher level people in the society always do not have good behaviors and take advantages of gays, she states that “the Supreme Court upheld a Cincinnati ordinance that denied gays and lesbians legal protection from discrimination in housing, employment, and other public accommodations” (249). This quote shows that even in higher government, the gays cannot get the same treatment like the housing and employees as the other residents. The surroundings around them are really terrible. They cannot get really benefits and advantages from the society or the government.
I think it’s pretty common for people to picture a Caucasian male with a suit and briefcase when picturing someone with some high end cooperate job. We used to be able to blame this on the fact that many different races weren’t getting the same level of education. In these days, with everyone getting equal opportunities in education and more diversity in higher educational institutes, there should be no reason that races aren’t represented more equally when it comes to white collar jobs. Many studies have shown that more diverse economies make for much stronger ones. When businesses can accept the nation’s ever changing demographics, they obtain a more diverse and inclusive workforce which benefits them economically.
Water purification is the process of removing undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases from contaminated water. The goal is to produce water fit for a specific purpose. Most water is purified for human consumption (drinking water), but water purification may also be designed for a variety of other purposes, including meeting the requirements of medical, pharmacological, chemical and industrial applications. In general the methods used include physical processes such as filtration, sedimentation, and distillation, biological processes such as slow sand filters or biologically active carbon, chemical processes such asflocculation and chlorination and the use of electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet
