Understanding Diversity In America

Television still doesn’t completely represent the diversity in America. Roughly three-quarters of film actors were white in 2014. There was only 12.5% African American, 5.3% Asian, and 4.9% Hispanic actors while there was 73.1% white actors. Studies also show the majority of actors are male. According to the annual 100 top grossing films 2007-2014 only 30.2% of speaking or named characters were women, while 73.1% were male whites.

The United States of America is a perfect example of cultural diversity. Starting with the Mayflower landing in Massachusetts Bay in 1620, to the Great Migration from 1915 to 1930, to the continual immigration into our country today this country has seen its culture grow and reshape itself over the years. The culture of the United States is diverse but understanding and appreciating various cultures does not always exist within today’s classroom or in today’s society. Understanding or even defining cultural diversity , identifying the challenges cultural diversity brings, or how to face cultural diversity are all issues educators face in today’s classroom.

According to Wood (2004), diversity is America's newest cultural ideal. Furthermore, the author argued that diversity sprawls across politics, law, education, business, entertainment, personal aspiration, religion, and the arts, as an encompassing claim about human identity. Under these conditions, 21st Century organizations are shifting their recruitment and hiring policy to create a diverse workforce. Likewise, universities are instituting new admissions rules to establish a diverse student body. The importance of diversity has many roles and effects. For example, diversity can improve productivity, create innovation, enhance robustness, produce collective knowledge, and perhaps most important, sustain further diversity (Page, 2011,

Something that I learned in this course that I saw in the video is that these people are mentally strong in the face of adversity in America. For example, although the man named Joseph, who has been laid out from work several times, his kitchen was set on fire, stabbed, and hit by a car, his response was surprisingly dull. I think it's important to understand the diverse in America. I think it's important because we have to understand what all these other people go through.We have to understand their different culture. We can't just discriminate them just because they don't look like you or like thing like you everyone is equal. Yes we might be different color but we are still humans which makes us the same. We might all dress differently or belief in different religion but i think we are all the same and we have to understand each other. There will be people discriminating you but that's how life is

The America I believe in is one of complete diversity. The citizens of America provide diversity of ethnics, cultures, and religious backgrounds, all of which create the complex image of what it means to be an American. Often characterized as a nation of immigrants, it’s rich heritage is in part due to consecutive waves of immigrants from all around the world. The United States has taken in more immigrants than any other country, today welcoming around 700,000 a year. Before these cultures came together, many questioned if a nation made up of varied backgrounds could succeed. As America has shown, yes a nation of varied backgrounds can succeed.

It is important to understand our diverse America because we need to understand different types of cultures that were not use to. For example Marq the person I read about he wasn’t really into knowing his culture, I wonder why. Understanding the diverse of a American means a lot in different ways. For me the word American means many people coming from around the world and meeting each other. Being different from others is not really weird because you get to show other people your life and learn from them too. In Marq life he would show a little of himself by going to korean restaurant for his birthday and show to his friends what food is actually good. Being one of kind doesn’t really matter in America.

The United States for years has been a country full of opportunities. As of the freedoms, the United States is a country full of many different types of people with their own cultures and different views of life. A reason for this is that, the United States is promoted as an interwoven country. The United States is the land of opportunities, but it can also be abundant in diversity and exclude others because of their culture or just the fact that people are not the same skin color. The color of one’s skin can also predict what opportunities people have in life. The United States may have a pluralistic society, but it can also be the greatest diverse country. Everyone in the United States no matter which race wants to achieve the American Dream
