During the 1850’s, there were many important events such as the publishing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the gold rush. A key event that occurred in this time frame was the Lincoln-Douglass debates, which occurred during the end of 1858.

During the Lincoln-Douglass debates, the candidates traveled around Illinois debating in each of seven of the nine congressional districts.They traveled from Ottawa to Alton, in a time period of two months. Although the candidates were elected by senators, Lincoln still brought their arguments to the people. Abraham Lincoln ran to occupy for Douglass’ seat in congress.

The main point that was brought up by both candidates was slavery. It would either be extinguished in all, or be spread to each and every state.
