The debates between Republican, Abraham Lincoln and Democrat, Stephen Douglas, were known as the Great Debates. There were three important parts that is worthy of taking note about these debates, these debates include the cause, the content, and the conclusion.

During the 1850s and 1860s, American was going through a dramatic change. It was the era of the Civil War, or also known as “The War Between The States.” It was fought between the United States and the Confederate States of America. Frederick Douglas, a black american, fought and spoke out about slavery and civil rights issues by using the U.S. Constitution trying to prove that the Constitution itself didn't support slavery like many southerners believed it did. The Lincoln Douglas debates became noted as significant in the anti-slavery movement. In Lincoln’s defeat, his status changed to of national prominence. Where he was then elected as President, leading him to be known as the one who abolished slavery.

In the 1850s the most controversial topics was slavery. Slavery opened up many debates, discussions and arguments. This decade is known as the turbulent decade because of all the events that led America downhill. It divided the nation into two, the North and South or the Union and Confederacy. Unconstitutional, immoral, inhuman and plain out wrong was how the Union described slavery. On the other side the south viewed slavery as the right thing to do because blacks were lesser human begins which made slavery justified. Also in the 1850s new territories in the nation were being added so the question of allowing slavery or not arose there. This quote shows the major conflict of this time period. Tensions between The North and The South had escalated due to a big issue, slavery. This conflict will lead to America`s bloodiest conflict, the Civil War. Slavery became the issue that spilt the United States, causing secession and the Civil War because of the admission of new states, legislation such as the Kansas- Nebraska Act, the nomination and debates of Abraham Lincoln, and the Election of 1860.

The Lincoln and Douglas debates started when Abraham Lincoln ran for Stephen A. Douglas’s seat on the United States Senate. Douglas and Lincoln were on opposing sides of the slavery issue. They differed in the ways that each man wanted to use in order to stop the spread of slavery to the territories. Douglas wanted to use the principle of popular sovereignty and Lincoln wanted to simply forbid slavery in the territories by federal authority.The debates were not all about ending slavery, they were about whether to prevent slavery from spreading to new states and new territories. Usually when Douglas scheduled a speaking engagement, often times Lincoln was present and offered a rebuttal speech. There were 7 total debates between the two men.

The debates were in contest for the United States Senate seat in Illinois. The main topic involved in the debates was based around slavery and the separation of the union because of it. The gold rush was a very dark period in American history and it shouldn’t be celebrated; the Native American’s were slaughtered in American thirst for gold Explosions of violence from both natives and settlers were common in this environment of prejudice and greed. Between 1850 and 1890 eighty percent of the total number of Native Americans in California died due to murder and massacre, disease, starvation, and forced migration from their native lands. The destruction of the culture and lives of the people native to California and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Greed changed the morals and values of the miners and Americans alike in the Gold Rush. The gold rush brought riches and highlighted racism of white Americans, while systematically destroying Native Americans in that region.
