Nathan Drake, the main character of the modern video game, Uncharted 4: A Theif's End, is known as a treasure hunter. In the fourth edition of the Uncharted series Nathan misses his old life, which now is 15 years in the past, and wants to get back in the swing of things. In this game he is searching for a pirate's, Henery Avery's, treasure. Throughout the game he comes into encounters and circumstances where he is trying to save people or save himself. Two big enemies are Nadine Ross and Rafe Adler, both working for the enemy team looking for this treasure called Shoreline. Nathan dislikes these characters because they are only trying to get the items for the money. In Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, the creators created Nathan Drake to very similarly …show more content…
Nathan grows up in an orphanage where he is known as a trouble maker and gets into a lot of fights. Nathan's brother, Sam, adds to his bad nature when he sneaks him out of the orphanage and attempts to steal their mother's artifacts that were taken from them. This clearly does not spark a start with Nathan's run against the law when he says, "I don't think the cops will think similarly."(level 1) This shows how Nathan would break the rules put up by authority to get his way. In one story believed by many, Hercules frees Prometheus from the rock he is bound up against. Prometheus was confined to the rock because he stole fire and gave the fire to the humans (CrashCourse 2017). This makes a similar comparison to Nathan Drake because Hercules saved Prometheus who was bound to a rock because he broke rules Zeus made. Another example can be the early horrors of life in both stories. Nathan Drake was an orphan which is very difficult and the only person he had, Sam his brother, drove away for work. Hercules was born from an affair between Zeus and Alcmene. Hera, Zeus' wife, became very angry because of the affair and the baby that she wanted revenge on Zeus. She made sure to make Hercules' life as miserable as she could for the rest of his life. This sparked Hera trying to kill Hercules as a baby and many other horrible things. Nathan Drake, in the video game, is very talented with a rope and jumps and climbs up many things. If he did not have this much athleticism then he most likely would not be able to be a treasure hunter. Hercules power was the power of strength. He used this power to stay alive when he was a baby when Hera was trying to kill him. An example of Hercules using his powers for good can be when he is little and he is tending the flock of sheep. In the end of the story Hercules defeats a lion that has been terrorizing the flock for a long time. Both Hercules and Nathan Drake also do things for rewards. In the video game, Uncharted 4, Nathan does very athletic things to get the treasure before the enemies in the game. One of Hercules' greatest stories is the Twelve Labors of Hercules (CrashCourse 2017). Basically, Hercules does twelve different jobs so that he can gain immortality. Both of these circumstances show how the heroes in the stories may exploit their abilities to gain something. Although their middle years were action packed, all things must have an
Hercules learns his lesson of not being selfish and to have an open heart when he finishes his labors and becomes a god Zeus says this ““A true hero isn't measured by the size of his strength, but by the size of his
This is because this search is the very thing which landed the Price family in the middle of the Congo and slowly tore them apart. In the beginning the family is somewhat close, but as the novel progresses the search slowly pulls them apart. This is because of Nathan’s quest for justice is self driven and causes him to lose focus on his family. Another reason this search for justice is significant is because it illustrates Nathan Price as a symbol for the western countries that exploit and attempt to colonize the Congo. Nathan’s feelings of superiority over the Congolese in The Poisonwood Bible captures the symbolism of Nathan and the western countries.
Who is the best example of a hero? Hercules. He is the mortal son of zeus. Hercules is the strongest hero of all time. Not only does he have incredible strength, but he is very caring of his family and mortals. Hercules is not just one of those basic, amatuer heros, he has so much experience since he had performed 12 labours. These are some of the reasons why Hercules is known as the greatest hero of all time.
As Nathan was treated poorly throughout the story I really saw him forgive his wife time and time again throughout the book. After the death of Nathan and Ruth’s daughter Ariel their relationship was tested to the max. Ruth would isolate herself from her husband and she almost despised him for not being upset with the Lord. Ruth could not accept how Nathan turned to God because she blamed God for all of this. While Nathan was being ignored, looked as bad, or just despised by his wife, he did not fold in and say whatever I give up. Nathan had an understanding and forgiving mindset he understood why his wife felt like this. Nathan forgave his wife while she was in the progress of despises him. Nathan never acted this way towards her, he simply turned the other cheek. Nathan showed a great will power by being able to forgive his wife so easily. This spoke volumes because he simply lived his life in a forgiving manner. As Nathan showed his faith and forgiveness through the story I saw a true man of God. Nathan lived in such a way where he could forgive people for the things they did and this was because of how strong he was in his faith. Living a life like Nathan means to live a life for God. A true man of God allowed for Nathan to live a very purposeful life.
Nathan Price struggles with survivor's guilt from WWII. This grief weighs him down, and it not only causes him to be hard on himself personally, it causes him to be hard on his wife and four daughters. He sees himself as a coward, however, in order to hide how he truly views himself, he shows himself off as brave and strong. In reality, Nathan is a coward for hiding himself behind God, and a selfish man for not letting himself commiserate with others. Along with trying to make himself seem like something he is not, he convinces himself that he is going to save the souls of the Congolese people using God’s power. In reality, he is just trying to save his spot in Heaven since he is so guilty about not dying in WWII. Nathan Price has a certain moral code and if anyone, including his family, disobeys it, he believes they should then be punished by God. He also thinks that God will frown upon any actions that are not centered on God. For example, Nathan does not even take the time to love his own wife and daughters. "Father would sooner watch us all perish one by one than listening to anybody but himself"
Every time Nathan was present in the story I was immediately displeased and wanted him gone. His vulgar comments and actions anger the reader so much, and Kingsolver wanted that image to stay. She wanted the readers to hate him so they can sympathize with Orleanna and her daughters. If she included his narrations in the book, the reader could possibly see his “soft side,” and his anger. His frustration has to have a root somewhere (his horrific experience in the war), and with the exposure of his own thoughts and feelings, the reader would be able to witness them and have a new opinion of him. For the purpose of The Poisonwood Bible though, Nathan had to remain the antagonist and stay the “bad
The reason why Nathan and Leah have this conflict is because of Nathan’s narrow-mindedness and lack of self awareness. The main purpose of The Poisonwood Bible is to show how different people deal with guilt. Nathan however has no guilt, and this is the source of many conflicts with Leah. Nathan has no self-awareness. When he does something he never thinks of his family, he only thinks
Nathan Price was the sole survivor in his battalion in the Bataan Death March and received a Purple Heart for his bravery. However these horrific events have shaped Nathan as the man he is today. His life 's purpose since has been to save all souls that he encounters. In Nathan 's mind the way to do this is through his God. Nathan 's past also means that he is relentless in the thought that he will never shy away from a
Waters. Here, Nathan abandoned the feeling of having more academic promise than his brothers and instead, traded in better education for acceptance. This is the beginning of Nathan’s downfall.
In 1949, Joseph Campbell, a writer and mythologist, published a book titled The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In it, Campbell proposed his theory that hundreds of hero stories can be summed up in a twelve-step pattern. Half of the cycle takes place in the hero’s regular world. The other half takes place in a special, unknown world. The cycle doesn’t only apply to ancient heroes; many modern heroes, such as Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games series, and Harry Potter of the Harry Potter series, fit in this sequence. Evidently, modern hero characters can be traced back to this simple pattern. One such hero that has been introduced in recent decades is Hercules, from the 1997 Disney movie Hercules. Hercules, like countless other heroes, fits
Hercules dreams of becoming a god in the movie, and he does everything in his power to achieve that. He knows that he has to become a hero first, so he searches for Philoctetes most commonly referred to as Phil, a trainer. Hercules trained and worked nonstop to become a hero, so he could become a god. With his hard work ethic and perseverance, he made his dream of becoming a god reality. Phil also promoted working to accomplish dreams and goals. He wanted to be the trainer that created the best hero. When Hercules first came to him, Phil was reluctant to help him and had nearly given up on his dream. Eventually, Herc convinced him; Phil was then focussed and gave his best effort to train Hercules to become the hero he strived to be. By the end of the movie, Phil was famous for being the trainer of Hercules, the renowned hero. Although he almost gave up on ever achieving his dream, Phil stuck through it and at last he had become famous for training the best hero. Oppositely from the movie, Phil was not a character in the myth. American culture changed the myth to invigorate strong work ethic and
Upon reading the stories, I noticed that they all have many similarities and differences. Uncle Nathan is similar to the narrators of “A Secret Lost in the Water” and “To Everything There is a Season” because they are unable to let go of the past. He continues to lament whether the choice he made of saving Delia instead of Eunice was right as he says “I wonder if I would have felt any better about it if I’d got Eunice instead of Delia” (Summers 200). Another thing he has in common with the other characters is that he lives in a secluded community since they mention that there are farmers in the area and farmers usually live in rural areas. But one thing that distinguishes him from the other protagonists is that he reacts to his situation differently,
Along with giving purpose, the myth of Hercules gave the Greeks a sense of self identity. Hercules went on a journey and grew mentally and physically in the process. It shows that by obeying and trusting the gods leads to happiness and the reverse as contrast. Hercules had to prove himself a hero and a son of Zeus just like the Greeks had to prove themselves a citizen and a part of their
