In April 1861, war broke out across the United States, and it would become known as the Civil War. During the Civil War many individuals stepped up to the plate, one of these individuals was Hiram Ulysses Grant. Hiram Ulysses Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Pleasant Point, Ohio. His parents, Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Grant, quickly moved his family to Georgetown, Ohio ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). Jesse Root Grant, his father, worked as a tanner and businessman. During his childhood, Grant was very timid, but he managed to keep average grades in school ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). Grant was stationed right outside St. Louis, Missouri and assigned to the Fourth Infantry Regiment ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). While serving in the Fourth Infantry Regiment in Jefferson Barracks, Ulysses became close with his roommate, Frederick Dent, and his family ("Ulysses S. Grant's," n.d.). Many times he went with Frederick to visit his family in St. Louis ("Ulysses S. Grant's," n.d.). In St. Louis, Grant met the future love of his life, Julia Dent. As the two grew close, a relationship started to develop. Ulysses and Julia spent a lot of time together, and when he went to visit her, he returned to his post late. Because Ulysses reached his post late, he had to pay a fine to the presiding officer, Captain Robert Buchanan ("Ulysses S. Grant's," n.d.). After four times of having to pay the fine, Grant refused to pay the fine, a bottle of wine. ("Ulysses S. Grant's," n.d.). This action caused a lifelong feud between Buchanan and Ulysses. Though he got in trouble for it, the two continued their relationship. Grant proposed to Julia in 1844, and the two were to wed soon. The couple got married on August 22, 1848 and went on a honeymoon soon after ("Ulysses S. Grant's," n.d.). In the early years of the marriage, Ulysses and Julia had four children: Frederick Dent Grant, Jesse Root Grant, Nellie Grant, and Ulysses S. Grant Jr. ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). Grant was assigned to a post called Fort Vancouver, Washington in 1852 ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). Grant became involved with multiple businesses in attempt to move his family closer to the coast ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). Since these businesses started to fail, Ulysses once again turned to drinking thus beginning a reputation that would haunt him through his entire career ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). The next year, 1853, Grant was relocated to Fort Humboldt, North Carolina and given the title of captain ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). At Fort Humboldt, Ulysses ran into a familiar face, commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Robert Buchanan. Quickly, within the next year, Grant retired from the military with heavy allegations of drinking ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). After leaving the military, Grant moved his family back to Missouri and started work as a farmer ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.). Soon this line of work proved unsuccessful and Ulysses moved on to pursue a new career. He failed to find success in real estate, engineer, and clerk ("Ulysses S. Grant," n.d.).
