In early 2014, Russia made the decision to conduct an illegal military intervention into Ukraine. It all began when there was a dispute over whether Ukraine should accept financial help from Russia or Europe, which then ascended into the ousting of the Ukrainian president and then invasion of Ukraine. More specifically, Russia began to taking over the Ukraine territory of the Crimean Peninsula through illegal use of force (Global Security, 2016). During that time, the Russian government voted to place Crimean’s into the Russian Federation, which had been rapidly accepted by the President of Russia himself, Vladimir Putin. Most of the Crimean population is ethnic Russians, although there are also the pro-Ukraine Tatar minorities that make …show more content…
The United Nations “could deploy observers into Crimea and other parts of Ukraine to report on the situation…the UN isn’t completely sidelined yet” (Brown, 2014). For NATO, this is the exact type of crisis they were formed for. However, the former Ukraine President rejected a NATO plan that could be integrated into the defense pact, making a military response from NATO unlikely.
In the Ukrainian crisis with Russia, there have been many non-state actors involved since the beginning of the invasion of Crimea. “From the Russian diaspora, non-governmental organizations, paramilitary groups and volunteer militias, there are a diverse range of non-state actors involved in the crisis” (German and Karagiannis, 2016). There has been a large impact in regards to religious groups with the Ukrainian conflict, such as the Russian Orthodox Church being able to rationalize why there was a need to invade Crimea. In Ukraine, a subset church of the Russian Orthodox Church broke off from the Russian Church to play a proactive role in assisting the pro-Ukrainian militias during the conflict. Organized crime and rise of militias have caused uncertainty for the country of Ukraine as the country lacks the ability to stabilize its regions against the crisis from the militias to Russia’s invasion.
The invasion of Ukraine caused the interest of non-state actors, key individuals, international governmental organizations,
Narrow hallways walled by human heads and limbs crowding every space between metal bars surrounded me. Children starved on unpaved streets with only rags that wrapped their bodies. I ended my high school career by serving a foreign community. In Chinandega, Nicaragua I had the opportunity to befriend and support the sick, the imprisoned, the orphaned and impoverished. This experience among others shaped me to appreciate the value of philanthropy and social justice.
In “The Cask of Amontillado” is about a man names Montresor who wants to get revenge with impunity. He wants to get away with what he is doing so he tricks the man to come with him and even though the reader thinks they know what will happen Fortunato, the man who is going to be killed, does not. Poe puts multiple insightful parts to create a creepy feeling to the story and to give the reader hints as to what is going to happen without saying it. In “The Cask of Amontillado” Edger Allan Poe makes the mood foreboding by using dialogue and sensory details.
The two countries, Russia and Ukraine, had different reactions towards the armed violence and impeachment of the Ukrainian president. Although the majority of the Ukrainians opposed Viktor’s decision to procrastinate the signing the EU-Ukraine integration agreement, all the ex-presidents accused for its interference with the affairs of Crimean. The former presidents of Ukraine, including Leonid Kravchuk and Leonid Kuchma described the present crisis as Russia’s political interventions designed to interfere with the internal affairs of Ukraine and its relationship with the European Union (Hanschke 1). The people of Crimea have not been seeking for secession from Ukraine, but their interest is to have extended autonomy and rights to govern the Crimean affairs with minimum involvement of the government of Ukraine. Russia, on the other hand, have dismissed the accusation and stated that it is pursuing the interest of the people of Crimea to join the Federation of Russia. Russia holds that the people of Crimea have the power to decide the future of their territory and Russia will be ready to respect their decision. Study shows that about 90
The conflict between the Ukraine and Russia is the Ukraine's most long-standing and deadly crisis; since its post-Soviet independence began as a protest against the government dropping plans to forge closer trade ties with the European Union. The conflict between Russia and the Ukraine stems from more than twenty years of weak governance, the government’s inability to promote a coherent executive branch policy, an economy dominated by oligarchs and rife with corruption, heavy reliance on Russia, and distinct differences between Ukraine's population from both Eastern and Western regions in terms of linguistics, religion and ethnicity (Lucas 2009).
In March, Russia annexed Crimea by a referendum with an unrealistic 97% in favor, claiming that they were protecting ethnic Russians. This Russian move was criticized by the international community since Russia was violating its promise. In foreign policy, countries priorities are in order from security, economy, autonomy, environment, identity and then prestige. Russia knew by annexing Crimea, it would ensure the safety of Crimea’s ethnic Russians. However, Russia needs Crimea for potential long term economic gains and better security in the Black Sea. Russia is also being suspected of supplying weapons to separatist held territories through dubious aid trucks. Again, Russia is supplying so called aid in the name of protecting ethnic Russians, though it is clear he has other economic and security reasons in
I am aware that on February 27, armed men from Russia seized your government buildings and Russian military men put Russian flags everywhere on barricades while disrupting innocent people’s homes. Crimeans protested these acts and shouted, “Ukraine is not Russia”, even though you are no longer part of Ukraine. Russia is trying to take over Ukraine by gaining
According to an issue of the Wall Street Journal dated 27/March-2014, Russia is still massing troops near the Russian/Ukraine border; the question is “Will Russia/Putin’s uses this buildup as a staging platform for another attack on Ukraine?” These actions by Russia are occurring despite President Putnuns assurances that he has no intentions of violating Ukraine territorial integrity. In addition Putin’s actions runs contra to a an agreement called “The Budapest Memorandum” of 1994, where Russia along with the US pledge to uphold that same integrity- Crimea would seem to make that Russian so much hot air.
The easiest solution, when discussing the Eastern Ukrainian conflict, would be to say the country is split between two sides. This split is normally presented right down the middle with a western and central, pro-European side and an Eastern and Southern, pro-Russian side. However, that is not necessarily the most rational conclusion to make. Ukraine is a country that has had its share of invaders and has often been forced to make choices for the greater good of the ethnic populations. The country’s borders have been rewritten throughout wars, rises and falls of empires, and when claiming independence. Countries have tried to absorb Ukraine and transform the populations, in order, to make them more dependent on the Mother country. Russia
With these major threats against the people of the Ukraine, the russians have been compromising the borders. In 1994, Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons in exchange for guaranteed security from threats and or uses against territorial integrity and political independence by signing the Memorandum. Russia’s illegal actions towards Crimea has increased major and aggressive military posture all around the world has diminished the rights to a secure border to the Ukraine, even though the treaty still stands with the Ukraine. With the unsecure borders, Russia invaded the Ukraine in 2014, and since then ten thousand people have been killed and 1.4 million internally displaced. People have been killed, tortured, and arrested because they posses something remotely Ukrainian, as in symbols and many other ways of expressing. The people of the Ukraine have been constantly terrorized since then and the numbers are building up.
The controversial Russian military intervention in Ukraine in 2014 depicts lawless arrogant image of Putin. Putin was responsible for invading Ukraine by deploying more than ten thousands armies in eastern Ukraine for more than a year. The civil war broke in Ukraine. The article, “The World May See An Even Darker Side Of Putin” depicted devastated consequences of war:
Russia has found itself naked after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Russia has always relied on ukraine as a natural gas highway and major agricultural producer. Russia has been living with its own puppet in Kiev. But with Yankovich ousted from office, Russia has no other choice but to take Ukraine back. Ukraine on the other hand has always felt the need to grow on its own, not to mention Ukraine has already been hurt many a time by Russia’s aggressive and heartless actions. The main purpose of this conflict is the
The citizens of Crimea have done nothing to deserve this treatment and need someone there to protect them in their time of vulnerability. This article is incredibly news worthy as something needs to be done about it. The only way that people can help this to be stopped is in others know about it and are aware of what is happening in other parts of the world like this. The vulnerability of the citizens of Crimea at this time is uncanny and is taken advantage of by Russia’s occupation of their home. Although the occupation may not be stopped the violations of human rights most certainly can and should be stopped.
NATO and Russian military exercises have erupted in Europe since January when Russia started forcing Ukraine to follow its role in world affairs. The United States, Europe and NATO have stated Russia is protecting rebels many among terrorist organizations who hold all types of Russian weaponry specifically the Russian made Kalashnikov or AK-forty sevens. Ninety five percent of Islamic terrorists in the middle east use the AK forty seven. German and American officials have stated Russia is interfering in Ukraine’s affairs. Russian officials say Ukraine stopping payment to rebels could turn into a mess.
Russia’s action in Crimea was a response to the threat of NATO’s further expansion along Russia’s western border. Russia seized Crimea to prevent a new government from joining NATO and that Kiev might evict Russia’s Black Sea Fleet from its long-standing base in Sevastopol. Russia wanted to recapture Crimea for the former territories of the Soviet Union. The government never accepted the loss of Crimea so they were determined to restore it in part by expanding Russia’s borders. The government improvised broader designs and presented the response to the unforeseen of Crimea, and this was an impulsive decision on Russia’s part rather than the careful move of a strategist with geopolitical ambitions.
Throughout the years, it has been observed that conflicts are not being objectively covered by the media worldwide and the 2013 Ukrainian Revolution could not be an exception. For that reason, several articles and essays have been published from various writers during the years, identifying a different scope on the matter each.
