Loyalty means sacrificing something of yours; whether it be your life, your job, or anything of importance to you, in order to stay true to an idea or person. The Encyclopedia of Power mentions two types of loyalty, blind faith and moral obligation. Blind faith is when someone follows a leader and remains loyal no matter his wrongdoings. Being loyal to one’s morals means following a person because you believe he is just and righteous, and if he were to do something immoral, you would retract your loyalty (Encyclopedia of Power). These two types of loyalties can coexist, but can also conflict with each other and within each other. What is important to understand is the root of these two loyalties and where they originate from.
Blind faith can be originated from love and fear. The play Antigone serves as a great source in order to truly comprehend the different types of loyalties. In Antigone, Ismene has blind faith to the crown which is rooted in fear. She tells her sister, after being asked to disregard the king's law not to bury her brother, “We’ll perish terribly if we violate law and try to cross the royal vote and power” (Lines 59-60). She fears her death and does not want to perish, and for that she remains loyal to the crown and will not cross the the royal vote and power. By remaining loyal she had to sacrifice something important to her, burying her own brother. That is blind faith because even if the king’s decree is immoral she still must remain loyal out of
For most people family is the most important thing in their life. But what if you had to choose between honoring your family and obeying the law? What would you do? In the play Antigone by Sophocles, a woman named Antigone is faced with a very difficult decision. If she decides to honor her dead brother she may be persecuted and put to death but if she leaves her brother’s body to decay without performing a ritual he will have a terrible afterlife. Antigone decides that family always comes first and perform the forbidden ritual on her brother. She is eventually prosecuted for her actions and later on kills herself. Personally, I agree with Antigone. To a certain extent, family should come first. In my opinion, family is almost always more important than authority. But, according to the play, it depends. Based on the results of everyone's actions I think that the play believes family is more important than authority. Creon punishes Antigone for choosing family over authority and as a result the members of his family all die.
Intro: There are a wide variety of themes present throughout the Odyssey, written by Homer. Be it hospitality, perseverance, vengeance or power of the Gods, loyalty is truly the theme that brings the whole book together. Being 10 years after the Trojan War, many have forgotten about Odysseus and his men as they constantly brave what the gods throw their way. This essay will be talking about Odysseus and Penelope’s mutual loyalty to one another, the loyal relationships between Gods and men and finally, the loyalty Odysseus’ men show for him until death. This essay with prove to us that without loyalty, Odysseus’ legendary journey would have been put to an end near where they started. The general theme of loyalty is what kept Odysseus
Loyalty is a concept, which can be seen in many point of views. Some people relate loyalty to love, friendships and family. Loyalty isn’t just loving someone, being kind and helpful, it’s being devoted to someone, when times get hard, appreciating them for what they’ve done for you, putting them before you; and no matter what you will always be there for them even at the hardest of times. For some people being loyal is harder at the hard times, some people let inhumanity take over man itself or people betray and sometimes for many different reasons like rumors going around school but sometimes for reasons you feel at first to be a good reason but in the end you just feel guilty like in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel; like the son of the Rabbi
When a person is loyal, they show allegiance to someone or an idea. An excellent example of a loyal character can be found in, “The King of Mazy May.” Walt Masters shows loyalty by protecting his neighbor’s land, even when it meant risking his own life. “Walt lay in the snow, thinking rapidly. He was only a boy, but in the face of the threatened injustice against old lame Loren Hall he felt that he must do something. He waited and watched, with his mind made up, till he saw the men began to square up new stakes. Then he crawled away till out of hearing, and broke into a run for the camp of the stampeders.” Walt shows his allegiance to his neighbor even in dangerous circumstances which is the definition of loyalty.
Loyalty is heroic. Loyalty is defined as faithfulness or devotion to a person, cause, obligations, or duties. In Homer's Odyssey one can see loyalty in many forms. Odysseus is loyal to the gods whom he realized held his life in their hands. Penelope was loyal to Odysseus, while trying not to offend the rude suitors. Telemachus was loyal to a father whom he only knew from the stories he had been told. Time and time again we see loyalty in the strongest sense, complete fidelity in time of uncertainty.
Loyalty to another person or to a cause may be an admirable trait, but it
Loyalty is defined in Merriam Webster dictionary as “faithful in allegiance to one's lawful sovereign or government”. Also known as comitatus, Beowulf declares
The main characters in Sophocles’ drama, Antigone, are Antigone herself, the play’s tragic heroine and Antigone’s uncle and King of Thebes, Creon. Both characters are ruled by powerful motivations and beliefs; however, they differ from one character to the next.
I define loyalty as the willingness of a person to sacrifice at their own personal expense in order to protect, uphold, defend and edify those persons, ideals and/or things which they cherish most. The amount of loyalty a person feels towards someone or something determines how much they are willing to sacrifice for them. As a soldier, we are called upon to sacrifice every aspect of our lives - the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual - in order to protect, uphold, defend and edify the U.S. constitution, the Army, our fellow soldiers and the nation and heritage
Per Dictionary.com Loyalty is defined as, “Characterized by or showing faithfulness to commitments, vows, allegiance, obligations, etc.” (“Loyalty", 2012, p. 01-01). When one initially joins the military, takes an oath and swears in; you state that you will bear true faith and allegiance to your country, the President of the United States,
The dictionary defines the word loyalty as a strong feeling of support or allegiance. Schools across the nation stand every morning, put their hands on their hearts and pledge their loyalty to their country. The novel Ship Breaker is about a young boy named Nailer who works to break ships apart in a futuristic society. His mom died and his father, Richard, became an addict leaving them very poor and reliant on Nailer’s income. One day, Nailer is walking the beach with his friend Pima recovering supplies after a hurricane, there they find a massive clipper ship with one survivor inside. The girl inside, Nita, was fleeing capture from her family’s enemies and shipwrecked. Soon after, Richard Lopez and his crew found Nailer, Nita, and Pima and captured them, planning to sell Nita to her enemies. With a stroke of luck, the three manage to escape from Richard. Nailer and Nita fled to New Orleans with an unfaithful member of Lopez’s crew. While in Orleans, the trio finds work, allies, and an escape from Nita’s enemies. Then, Nita is captured by the enemy who has allied with Richard Lopez. In response, Nailer set out on the clipper ship of his dreams to find her, and unknowingly, to find himself. True loyalty doesn't come with any ties, it is unconditional and without hesitation. In Paolo Baciagalupi’s Science Fiction book Ship Breaker, use of symbolism and conflict tell the story of Nailer Lopez and his journey to find that loyalty doesn't just lie in family, it's who has your
In the play Antigone, the Greek tragedy, Antigone is caught for burying her brother against the king's will. You probably thinking, well nothing like this would happen. But this moment to many of us is very relatable in the sense of how we stand out. Thank goodness for America and it’s freedom, because in some places it’s against the country's law to have a different religion, gender or ethnicity. If you were to live in one of these countries would you still be bold enough to stand out because of what you believe? Would you be willing to sacrifice everything for your standards even if this means not being a good citizen? You might be surprised what people sacrifice for. In this essay you will hear more about my personal thoughts about what
She does not merely contradict the law, but also refuses to fulfill her duties to her societally recognized family, out of her devotion to her original household, which consists of her biological family members. Antigone responds to Creon’s edict with disgust by replying, “Then what are waiting for? More talk? / Your words disgust me, I hope they always will” (Ant. 499-500). This contempt accentuates her disloyalty to Creon especially since a woman should never speak to a king in this manner.
In the play Antigone, written by Greek playwright Sophocles, loyalty to family seems to be a recurring theme. We first see it when Antigone defies King Creon's order to keep her brother, Polynices, unburied as a punishment for his betrayal of their country Thebes. We also see how Antigone's sister, Ismene, accepts partial blame for the burial (even though she refused to actually do it) in an affectionate, loyal act. Creon is also family (their father's brother), but he, however, betrays this family trust and loyalty when he sentences Antigone to death for disobeying his law. There are, however, repercussions for this death sentence, that prove that there are two central tragic heroes in this play. She is
L-Loyalty is my commitment I will always have for my country, other service members and my superiors. loyalty is important because if I did not care for my country I would have no motivation to serve and protect my fellow servicemen and the citizens of my country. Loyalty also means that I will not betray my country, or fellow service members in any way and I will always stay true to my country. Being a person that other people can count on is being Loyal.
