Two Models of Successful Musical Women I love music and it is a big part of my life. After all I’m currently majoring in music with a concentration in vocal performance at the unsinkable Albany State University. Music is a part of everything I do. It helps me do homework, express my feelings, and keep my sanity. I play several instruments such as the piano, trumpet, and mellophonium. I also sing and write songs. Analyzing and dissecting songs and lyrics helps me differentiate mediocre artists from exceptionally great artists. Jill Scott and Jazmine Sullivan are two of my favorite singers, but they have many different qualities. Jill Scott is an extraordinary singer, songwriter, and actress. Jill Scott did not see herself being a successful musician and actress. Jill Scott attended Temple University to study secondary education. Once she became a …show more content…
This helped her students with memorization, but Scott’s professor disapproved her methods of teaching so she quit school. After leaving school she gained a role in a Canadian play entitled, “Rent”. While participating in the play, Scott started performing spoken word pieces that she had written which allowed her to get discovered. Jill had an encounter with Jeffrey A. Townes and Ahmir- Khalib who helped her develop her career in the music industry. Jill Scott used her ability to write the hit single entitled, “You Got Me”, which was performed by Erykah Badu and a hip hop group called “The Roots”. This was the first of many songs that Jill Scott would get nominated and received a Grammy or other awards for. During the Grammy’s in 2002, Jill Scott was nominated for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance” for her song entitled, “A Long Walk”. In this song, it discusses the pleasure of developing a healthy relationship. She gives ideas of things she will do with the man that she will be trying to get to know. Ms. Scott also discusses how she will enjoy their time together. Ms.
Music plays a big role in my life. I listen to it everyday. Music helps me process what emotions I am feeling that day. Emotions such as anger, happiness, depression and anxiety. For example in 2011 my commanding officer for young marines died. Then three month later my grandfather passed away. Everything felt hopeless, I was depressed and
I myself am very dedicated to music and I love to play the piano and learn and play all types of music. I remember when I was a little girl I would sneak out of classes and go to the music room where there was a piano and just play all of her music. For me, it was a way to get away from everything I was going through. Her music was deep and had meaning to every single word in the lyrics. To me, that was all I needed. I would do research on her and see what she would be doing and her interests and we were just interested in the same kinds of things. She was and always will be my biggest idols. When I was younger, I always longed to go to her concert and sit in the audience and just feel her music in me. By freshman year, I finally got tickets to see her and it was the most amazing experience ever. It meant so much to me that I was actually in tears while she was singing live and it felt so perfect. A few years later, my senior year, I went to go see her again. And this time it was an even better feeling. Her drive and determination to help anyone in her path is what touches me and makes me want to do the same things for my community and everyone around me.
Holiday’s interest in a musical career began when she was around fifteen years old. She had a rough childhood and turning to music was a good thing for her. She began singing in local clubs around New York. By the age of eighteen, she was discovered by producer John Hammond, while performing in a Harlem jazz club. He worked with up-and-coming clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman and worked towards getting Benny and Billie to do some work together. Together the pair wrote a 1934 top ten hit; Riffin the Scotch and the song Your Mother’s Son-in-law. The following year, Holiday went on record with jazz pianist Teddy Wilson and a few others. Soon after Billie Holiday came out with a few singles including What a Little Moonlight can do and Miss Brown to You. That same year, Holiday appeared in the musical short, Symphony in Black along with Duke Ellington. In her young career, Holiday came out
She began singing solo’s at New Bethel Church. At the age of fourteen Aretha’s talent for singing was recognized by her father, and he started managing her shortly after, so he could get her a recording deal. She started off by going on the road with her father and singing at various churches while he preached. This resulted in Aretha Franklin getting signed to her first record deal with J.V.B. Records Label. Her first studio album was titled “Songs Of Faith”. Although this did not put her on the map as the Queen of Soul. Aretha decided at the age of 18 that she wanted to go in the direction of Sam Cooke and sing Pop music. It was not until she signed with the Columbia Records in 1960, that she had her first single chart the Billboard on the Hot 100 with her song “Won’t Be Long” off her first pop studio album Aretha: With the Ray Bryant Combo. With her talent Franklin was able to record in diverse genres such as vocal jazz, blues, standards, rhythm and blues and doo-wop. In 1962, she released two more studio albums: ‘The Electrifying Aretha Franklin’ and ‘The Tender,The Moving,Swinging Aretha Franklin’. Her number-one R&B singles are “Respect” in 1967, “Chain Of Fools” in 1967, “Think” in 1967, and “Share Your Love With Me” also in 1967. In 1968 Aretha performed at Dr. Martin Luther King’s Funeral. She also performed at the presidential inauguration of Jimmy Carter. Doing her music is the reason why Franklin is where she is now and why she is known as the queen of
When one hears the word “feminist”, many different things may come to mind. One may think of the “bra burning” feminists of the 1960s or the “riot grrrl” feminists of the 1990s. It can bring to mind issues such as abortion, birth control, and unfair wages. There are many different aspects of feminism, some of which are understood only by those involved in the movement. But like most things people are passionate about, feminism has held a strong place in music since its very beginning, and can be seen in its festivals, its politics, and in the average American’s everyday life.
Florence Mills was a outstanding singer and dancer because of the way she carried herself through her dances. And she was a leading performer in every dance that she danced in or presented of herself, and she also had a amazingly hauntingly voice which gave her acceptance to be a TV show entertainer. She caught success in only two TV shows. Even though, she was born into poverty that didn't stop her from being a unique performer. She always made her through jazz and dancing into more advanced things which gave her major but little popularity in both worlds.
Little did her former-friend know, was that this betrayal would influence her songs and lead to other top-charted

From wearing cupcake bra outfits to performing in a lavish swimsuit, Katy Perry has demonstrated how women in the music industry use sex appeal to captivate their audience. In today’s society, it isn’t uncommon to see female artists in revealing, flashy outfits surrounded by flashing lights and steam. Artists such as Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj have certainly made news headlines for their audacious performances. In many cases, artists are presenting false images to their fans as an investment for future sales. Female artists continue to be sexually objectified by their audience, which increase their viewership, which leads to record labels pressuring artists to keep a sexy image.
Music is apart of everyone’s life. We listen to it daily on the radio. We hum melodies when we have the song stuck in our head. Music is a huge part of my life and it has helped me tremendously. I think every genre is good and has its ups and downs. I don’t enjoy maybe 3 or 4 genres but I will listen to the rest of them, from classic rock to rap.
Nothing is more enjoyable than listening to your favorite song. All over the world, people listen to music on a daily basis. Music plays a major part in a tremendous number of people’s lives. While they are enjoying the music, they do not think about how the song came about. Music is not just the sound you hear or the voices in the background. People do not think about what is behind the scenes of where music comes from. Before the song is completed, someone has to make it happen. In music, there are different careers which are the song writer, the manager, the marketing executive, and the produced. Each of these careers play a huge role in how music is brought to the public.
Every day millions of Americans turn on their radios, IPods, or some other device which allows them to listen to their favorite musicians and have no idea that there is a union standing guard to ensure the rights of those very musicians. The average American may think their favorite musicians are rolling “dough” and not realize that for the past hundred and fourteen years the American Federation of Musicians, aka AFM, has worked to improve the professional lives of musicians across North America. (American Federation of Musicians, 2010) AFM attracts its members with a mission to unite professional musicians which states, “We can live and work in dignity; Our work will be fulfilling and compensated fairly; We will have a meaningful voice
People say that music has the ability to heal a person mentally and spiritually. But to me, music is much more than just healing. It is a way for me to escape this world called reality and enter a world with in my imagination through the different beats, harmony, and chorus. Only when listening to music, I can truly feel all my emotions with each song having the power to make me remember, from painful to happy memories. As I grew up to be the person I am today, my music journey also grows with me. Looking back at it now, I would never want to change a single thing.
