Two Models of Successful Musical Women I love music and it is a big part of my life. After all I’m currently majoring in music with a concentration in vocal performance at the unsinkable Albany State University. Music is a part of everything I do. It helps me do homework, express my feelings, and keep my sanity. I play several instruments such as the piano, trumpet, and mellophonium. I also sing and write songs. Analyzing and dissecting songs and lyrics helps me differentiate mediocre artists from exceptionally great artists. Jill Scott and Jazmine Sullivan are two of my favorite singers, but they have many different qualities. Jill Scott is an extraordinary singer, songwriter, and actress. This helped her students with memorization, but Scott’s professor disapproved her methods of teaching so she quit school. After leaving school she gained a role in a Canadian play entitled, “Rent”. While participating in the play, Scott started performing spoken word pieces that she had written which allowed her to get discovered. Jill had an encounter with Jeffrey A. Townes and Ahmir- Khalib who helped her develop her career in the music industry. Jill Scott used her ability to write the hit single entitled, “You Got Me”, which was performed by Erykah Badu and a hip hop group called “The Roots”. This was the first of many songs that Jill Scott would get nominated and received a Grammy or other awards for. During the Grammy’s in 2002, Jill Scott was nominated for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance” for her song entitled, “A Long Walk”. In this song, it discusses the pleasure of developing a healthy relationship. She gives ideas of things she will do with the man that she will be trying to get to know. Ms. Scott also discusses how she will enjoy their time together. Ms.
