The phenomenally popular vampire novel, Twilight has intrigued millions of young adult readers internationally since its release in 2005. What comes from this tremendous success is the admiration over the main character Edward Cullen, he is seen as the ultimate ideal of a boyfriend. Readers rave over the relationship between Edward and Bella, however, their relationship is built upon violence due to Edward’s violent and abusive nature.There are multiple instances during the novel that are shockingly seen as “romantic” to some. In the vampire novel Twilight written by Stephenie Meyer’s, gender violence is conveyed through the actions and portrayal of Edward Cullen.

Bella’s introduction to Edward is unnerving. “He was glaring down at me again, his black eyes full of revulsion. As I flinched away from him, shrinking against my chair, the phrase if looks could kill suddenly ran through my mind. (Meyer pp. 23–24).” It is clear that Edward frightens Bella from the beginning, and later into that day he still seems to be stalking her. In spite of his jealousy, he even follows her home that day and watches her enter into her home and watch where she keeps the house key. During their relationship, he attempts to isolate her from others and is quick to get her away from others. He is continually shielding her from people outside, and forbids her from seeing Jacob even messing with her car so she can't escape. Not only does he shield her from her friends, but even from her own father and family. He does this all in the name of her safety and well being, which is viewed as “heroic”. His purpose and reason for things are not considered as an annoyance or strange, but rather charming, which benefits
