Turtle's Change In The Westing Game By Ellen Raskin

Someone once said, “You can’t change people, either accept who they are or start living life without them.” This relates to the Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, because in the book, one of the main characters, Turtle, changed throughout the story. At the beginning of the story, she was rude, but at the end she was kind and trustworthy and this showed through her choices, actions, and dialogue. What I have learned is that change is possible if you try. According to the chapters in the beginning of the book, The Westing Game, Turtle is rude; and this rudeness is demonstrated through Turtle’s actions as well as her dialogue. One of Turtle’s pieces of dialogue is that she takes the spotlight off of her sister when she is getting fitted for her wedding dress. On page 12, the text explicitly states, “‘Mrs. Baumbach, could you hem my witches costume? I need it for tonight.’ Mrs. Wexler answered. ‘Can’t you see …show more content…

A piece of dialogue that shows that Turtle Wexler is trustworthy is, on page 67, it states, “‘My lips are sealed.’” This dialogue shows that Turtle can keep a secret. A choice that Turtle made that shows she is trustworthy is when she figures out who the bomber is, but doesn’t say it because she doesn’t want the bomber to get in trouble. To support this, on page 155, the author states, “She was protecting someone. She had set off the fireworks in the elevator to divert suspicion from the real bomber.” This evidence shows that Turtle was trustworthy because she kept the secret of her not being the real bomber. The last choice that Turtle made that showed that she is trustworthy was when she figured out that Sandy McSouthers, Julian Eastman, Barney Northrup, and Sam Westing were all the same person; and she didn’t tell anyone else because Sandy/Julian/Barney/Sam didn’t want her to.
