When I enrolled at Truman State University, I did not realize how my race impacted me on both a personal and global level. I believed we lived in a post-racial society where race and ethnicity did not matter. However, on Monday, November 24th, 2014, when officer Darren Wilson was not indicted for the killing of Michael Brown, I experienced an epiphany. Race matters. Whether an individual believes that race did or did not play a role in Michael Brown's death, race was reignited as a prominent topic in America due to the Black Lives Matter movement. Roland Martin, the host of News One Now, stated in an interview that “The reason Black Lives Matter has been so successful is because they have forced the most rigorous discussion on police brutality …show more content…
Klyukovski, I pondered how my institution dealt with diversity. He proposed examining Truman’s vision statement to understand what the institution will do when issues of diversity arise. After conducting some preliminary research on vision statements and generic criticism, I knew this is what I wanted to study. I was ecstatic that I was able to add to the scholarly conversation centered on vision statements within higher education. It was incredible learning how such a short statement served as a reminder of where an organization wants to go. During the McNair program, I discovered a part of me that I never knew existed, a researcher. I never thought of myself as that because I believed researchers were naturally smart, which I was not. However, intelligence is not determined by grades or GPA. It is about grit, which I gained by never being the victim of my circumstances. As mentioned earlier, coming to terms with my racial identity definitely impacted my academics. While I was enraged by Truman’s aura, I realized I could not let that take away from my mental energy anymore. With the arrival of my senior year, I channeled all that frustration in graduate applications and studies because unless I did well in those two avenues, I would not be leaving Truman anytime soon. Now, I have been accepted into five different Master Programs (as of 3/18) at the University of Texas-San Antonio, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Colorado Denver and Colorado Springs and Saint Louis
On the afternoon of August 9, 2014 an African-American male by the name Michael Brown was fatally shot to death by a Caucasian male police officer named Darren Wilson in Ferguson, MO. An investigation was immediately launched through the collection of evidence from the crime scene, multiple autopsies of Michael Brown’s corpse, and interviews with witnesses. For several months following the shooting, investigation, and Grand Jury decision, there was immense public speculation and scrutiny. The country was divided on the controversial matter and intensely debated if Officer Wilson justifiably discharged his sidearm in self-defense or in racially motivated cold blooded murder. This event produced protests, riots, political movements, and national
In 1974, the civil rights movement had been over for about 6 years, a gallon of gas cost about 55 cents, and the host of the late night TV show “The Tonight Show” Jimmy Fallon was born. However, those were of little importance compared to the historic case of Tennessee v. Garner. This is a case reminiscent of the recent shootings that have induced the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Although the black lives matter movement was not created until 2013, the public outrage at the Tennessee v. Garner case was similar to the anger shown in protests and online in the past few years. However, there was more to the case than just the shooting of an unarmed black man that made it so controversial.
In 1987 Truman W. Smith had a vision. Truman’s vision was to build a long term nursing care facility for children. Truman fought, parlayed, and lobbied in the legislature to build his unique facility. In 1989, his vision became reality, and the Truman W. Smith Children’s Care Center was completed. The TWSCCC was the first facility of its kind in the state of Texas, to this day it remains the only facility in a five state area to provide long term care for critically ill children.
President Harry S. Truman established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal forces from the axis powers. The Truman Doctrine completely altered U.S. foreign policy, away from its usual stance of withdrawal from regional conflicts not directly involving the United States, to one of possible intervention in far away conflicts. The Truman Doctrine was based from a speech delivered by President Truman on March 12, 1947. The immediate cause for the speech was a recent announcement by the British Government that, as of March 31, it would no longer provide military and economic assistance to the Greek Government in its civil war against the
I likes the story “Truth About Truman”. I like the story because I like the message it gives out to the readers. I like the message it gives because it shows that bullying online and in person can be a horrible thing and that it can lead to dangerous things. I also like the story because it shows that you can't always trust people that you haven't known for a long time. It shows that because it gives an example of when Hayley and Brianna make a we hate Lily website even though they were supposedly good friends and turned out to be fake friends.
After the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed, 18 year old black man by a police officer of Ferguson Missouri, the community took to the streets in a movement to protest a pervasive racial tension that some believe may have caused the shooting. Amidst riots, marches and other public demonstrations, Ferguson mayor James Knowles has given statements and interviews to the press to address both the tragedy and the allegations of racial conflict and profiling in Ferguson being at the root of the tragedy. Among these press appearances was an interview on the Steve Malzberg Show, four days after the shooting, wherein Mayor Knowles’ efforts to perform PR damage control give insight into how he views the town, and how some authority figures
Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was shot and killed on Aug. 9, 2014, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer, in Ferguson. “Three minutes - that is how long it took from the time Officer Darren Wilson confronted teenager Michael Brown at 12:01, and 12:04 when other officers arrived on the scene to find Brown dead. Those three minutes, and the fallout that followed, have been the source of protests, headlines and general unrest in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri” (P 2). But what exactly happened in that time is still a source of confusion. Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson were leaving Ferguson Market and Liquor. Surveillance videos show Mr. Brown stealing some cigarillos. While they walk along West Florissant Avenue in
Although Truman was not able to create a universal health care system for America’s citizens during his presidency, his efforts did help to expand health care quality and access throughout the country (Schimmel, 5) and paved the way for the creation of Medicaid and Medicare during the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a loosely‐coordinated, nationwide movement dedicated to ending police brutality that rose to prominence in late 2014. It takes its name from a hashtag started by three Black feminist activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi but the movement and the hashtag are not identical (Freelon, McIlwain, & Clark, 2016). BLM has achieved national reputation through their online and offline organizing, obtaining extensive news media coverage and glowing references in music and entertainment television. Based on a horrendous incident that sparked a concern for a lot of Black people across the world, the sudden need for a social movement was born called BLM. Black Lives Matter is a national organization working for the validity of Black life and also working to rebuild the Black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter broadens the conversation and highlight the incidents around state violence to include the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. This referring to the ways in which Black lives are deprived of basic human rights and dignity. According to the article The Murder of Walter Scott, which talks about race and class, “African Americans are less than 13% of the U.S. population yet they are nearly 50% of those killed by the police. North Charleston has a population of 104,000, 47% Black and the police force is 80% white (Miah, 2015)”.
President Harry S. Truman had a major ethical and moral dilemma in choosing whether or not to use the atomic bomb as a resolution to the war. This came with many advantages and disadvantages. We must consider several facts. President Truman was almost thrown upon the presidential role upon Roosevelt’s death. He was a reliable party man who was well liked by professional politicians. His inexperience and desire to please the American people while keeping our country safe must be considered. Utilitarianism can be defined as a commitment to the search for the common good. In which the use of the atomic bomb would be bring. Of course the obvious disadvantages to using the atomic bomb would be there many deaths and possible retaliation from Japan. We will examine all of these in the following paper.
In the past year, the whole world has had its attention drawn to domestic conflicts between white police officers and black civilians. Since the invention of the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag in 2013, there have been over 50 million posts on Twitter alone under the hashtag. The recent incidents, largely prompted by the shootings of Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, and the murder of Eric Garner by white officers, has brought both the topics of racism and the militarization of the police into public discourse. Arguably, however, it is the treatment of these cases in court, and the non-indictments of Darren Wilson and Daniel Pantaleo in their respective grand jury proceedings, that have ignited protests and riots from many across the nation who insist
On August 9, 2015, a Ferguson Police officer shot and killed unarmed young man, Michael Brown. This set off a chain of events that catapulted the #BlackLivesMatter Movement into national media attention. Since the unnecessary death of Michael Brown,
Originating in 2012, the political movement known under the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter has exploded in size and renown. This movement, which was initially inspired after a police officer was acquitted of all charges after fatally shooting an African American individual, seeks to diminish police brutality against African American individuals and systemic racism particularly in the United States. Sweeping the nation, Black Lives Matter has become an international movement and its influence has only increased with time. On the movement’s official website, the following was written regarding the history of the hashtag-inspired entourage, “#BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was posthumously placed on trial for his own murder. Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our dehumanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes.” (http://blacklivesmatter.com/about/). The #BlackLivesMatter movement asserts that racism is still prevalent in modern society and exists not only in passive forms. Instead, racism apparently can be both overt and implicit.
The year was 2012, a year where in which the Black Community was filled with hatred as news spread around the country of the death of a young Black child to the hands of an adult male. The story interrupted every scheduled program on each news station as breaking news and was a news headliner for almost a week. According to the defendant, the young man and himself got into an altercation in which resulted in the defendant retrieving a weapon from his waistband and shooting the young man to his death. From here, the US took a turn for the worse. Multiple police brutality and death cases rose against the Black population. It was becoming a domino effect. But this was not the issue. The real issue lye within each of the cases, the victims were
Subsequently to the end of the World War II, and for almost forty years, the so called 'Cold War' crossed different phases. In fact, the political relationship between USA and URSS was constituted by periods of high tension and periods of relaxation. In fact, the most tragical period of the Cold War was recorded between the 1947 and the 1953, period in which the American President H. Truman gave way at the development of the so-called "Truman Doctrine", expressing the need for a containment of the USSR and communism. Subsequently, with the election of the American president Eisenhower and the appointment of Khrushchev as Secretary of the CPSU, the two superpowers experienced a new phase of "peaceful coexistence". In fact, on February 1956,
