The beginning of the movie Troy, starts off with the Greek army, led by King Agamemnon, ready for battle against the troops of Triopas. The kings agree to have a battle of their greatest warriors. Triopas summons Boagrius, a very large soldier that would set fear to any other hero. Agamemnon summons Achilles, who isn't present at the time. He arrives shortly after and without hesitation, he defeats Boagrius single-handedly. Many great heros would fear Boagrius because of his great size and strength, but not Achilles. He was considered the greatest warrior ever born and on Agamemnon’s side. He is very hesitant to fight for a king and has no interest to fight for a king. Achilles goes from wanting to be remembered as the greatest warrior with no ruling and not caring, to a warrior that cares for a woman named Briseis.
There is a gathering with the people of Troy and the people of Greece that hold a toast to being allies with no intention of war of any sort. But when Paris expresses his love for Helen, the wife of Menelaus, she sails off with the Trojan army is secret. Hector is oblivious to wrongdoing of his brother Paris. He knows that with that incident, the Greek army will go into battle with the mighty Troy. Before the Trojans can return Helen to Menelaus, Greece has already set their mind on war. That being said, this will be the greatest war ever fought. The Trojan war.
Greece knows that the only way that they will win The Trojan War is the help of Achilles. They know
Furthermore, Achilles attacked multiple cities in order to take from them because after multiple years of being in a war, the Greeks were gradually losing supplies. After attacking cities, he would try
The Trojan War started when a dispute happened between the goddess Hera, Athena and Aphrodite over an apple. They then asked Zeus to judge and he wouldn’t choose. Paris the prince of troy was then asked to judge Athena offered him ambition, fame, success in war. Hera offered Paris power, riches and king of Europe and Asia and Aphrodite offered Paris the love of the most beautiful women in the world. Paris chooses Aphrodite. The most beautiful women happened to be Helena who was married already. The Trojan War started when Paris visits Helen and Menelaus and kidnaps Helen with him back to Troy who is married to Menelaus who was a Spartan king. Helen’s father, Tyndareus promises to protect her and support her husband whatever choice she makes Menelaus finds out his wife is missing and goes after her. When he arrives Paris then offers a solution to keep his brother hector from fighting his battle. He challenges Menelaus to a one on one duel and the winner takes Helen. Menelaus accepts the challenge and they began fighting, Paris starts losing and his leg gets cut, he then crawls to Hectors feet. Menelaus threatens hector that he will kill Paris at his feet and as he raises his sword Hector stabs him, killing him and Agamemnon declares war. Later on, Hector ends up confusing Achilles’s cousin with Achilles because he was wearing his armor. Achilles then gets mad at him and him and Hector fight Achilles wins and drags his body back to his town. Hectors dad goes there to get back his daughter and hectors body. Later on, Greeks thought of an idea to get inside of Troy by building a giant wooden horse, also known as the Trojan horse and they had men hide inside of the horse. The Greeks made them think they left by sailing away and gave them the horse. The Trojans thought of it as a victory trophy or reward. But Paris thought it was a trick and didn’t want the horse brought inside and many others agree that they should burn
In the Trojan War, pride and glory are qualities that are very crucial to soldiers. Soldiers perform well in the war to get recognized by their nation and retrieve honorable titles. However, in the midst of war, soldiers tend to make irrational decisions for the sake of their pride. Throughout The Iliad, Achilles makes many decisions that are irrational, but in his defense, he believes that his actions will help uphold his self-image. For instance, Achilles refuses to engage in combat after Agamemnon takes away his female companion Briseis from him. Resultantly, Achilles’ refusal to engage in combat impedes on the progress of the Greeks in the Trojan War, which indicates that Achilles’s decisions were irrational and immature. In The Iliad,
Barry Strauss organizes his summary of the Trojan War by referencing Homer 's the Iliad and the Odyssey and compares it to the historical contexts of what he thinks happened. Most scholars agree that the Trojan War dates back around 1200 B.C. during the Bronze Age. The most popular tale of how the Trojan War starts is when Paris, Prince of Troy, goes to visit Sparta to mend relations. In Sparta, Paris is welcomed by Menelaus, King of Sparta and his beautiful wife Helen. According to ancient sources, Menelaus went to Crete for business and foolishly left Helen all alone with Paris (Strauss, 15). Afterward, Helen is seduced by Paris and flees Sparta to accompany him back to Troy, along with bountiful treasures.
The Greeks show us some of their culture through their will to fight and how important it is to beat the Trojans. They show how important military and war are to the Greek culture in many ways. They first way they show it is by having every Greek army join Menelaus to go to Troy to get Helen back. They all decided to join him since it’s the right thing to do and they know that they are a stronger army with more men. They had tens of thousands of men willing to fight the Trojans to help Menelaus get his wife back from Paris and the Trojans. Another way they show how important it is to them is by deciding to continue that they want to fight without Achilles and his army. Achilles was a Greek hero the best warrior, and had the best army,
In Homer’s work, the Trojan War is fought not for conquest or wealth but for the honor of the Spartan king Menelaus after he had his wife taken by Paris of Troy. In the eyes of the Greeks, this was a slight on his honor worthy of war. Early on in the work, Helen despairs at being the cause of the war. She laments
Paris catches his eye on King Menelaus wife, Helen. They both really love each other and they don’t want to leave each other so Helen goes to Troy with Paris. Paris tells his brother and Hector thinks that he has ruined the peace between Troy and Sparta. As King Menelaus finds out that Helen has left him he immediately gets his army ready to go over to Troy and fight to get back Helen. Achilles is very eager to fight to get Helen back to Sparta. He is internally…..
“This will be the greatest war the world has ever seen. We need the greatest warrior.” Nestor informs King Agamemnon of this during preparations for war in the movie adaptation of the famous Trojan War. Trojan princes, Paris and Hector, arrive in Sparta to begin peace talks, yet the young prince Paris falls in love with the beautiful Queen of Sparta. Helen reveals her disdain for the King and agrees to flee with Paris to Troy, despite the war such an action would bring. Once her disappearance is discovered by King Menelaus, of Sparta, he goes to his brother to request aid in destroying Troy. At this request, King Agamemnon is overjoyed with the chance to finally destroy Troy and calls for all the leaders of Greece along with the greatest warrior,
The Trojan War was a ten year long war that brought out heroes and villains alike. Paris caused the Trojan War by seducing Helen away from her husband. A villain is selfish and just wants what is best for himself, and that is exactly how Paris is. Through Homer’s epic telling of the story, readers are shown that Paris’ actions are nowhere near heroic, so therefore it thus proves he is a villain.
The Iliad: Book I, is about the conflict between Achilles and Agamemnon in the beginning of the Trojan War. It shows how vigorous Achilles’ rage was and that he is no one to mess with. The book states “Peleus’ son Achilles, murderous, doomed”. This shows his fury in just a few words. Achilles was a Greek hero who was the son of a Goddess named Thetis. He was an incredible solder; brave, violent and godlike. However, Agamemnon was the commander of the Achaean Army. He was greedy, aggressive and selfish. He was described as “the most grasping man alive”. He absolutely hated Achilles. I feel that he was jealous of how respected Achilles was among the ranks in the army because of his superior skills in the field of battle. Agamemnon claimed Chryseis as his prize, after sacking a Trojan town. Chryseis was a daughter of a Priest of Apollo, Chryses. He offered an enormous ransom to get his daughter back. At first Agamemnon didn’t want it but the people round him persuaded him that it would be best to let her go so they could be released from the plague that Apollo put on them. Agamemnon then poised to Achilles that he is going to steal Achilles prize, Briseis. This is when Achilles’ rage shows at its best. He nearly draws his sword to kill Agamemnon but he is stopped by the goddess, Athena.
As Homer depicts a most interesting tale that starts at the end of the Trojan War, the Iliad begins with a quarrel between Agamemnon, fearless leader of the Achaeans, and Achilles, a fierce and deadly soldier. Unfortunately, when Achilles takes part in a battle that is not his to fight in the first place, Achilles and Agamemnon grow quite angry with each other. When Agamemnon is forced to give up his war prize because he insulted the priest of Apollo, he becomes jealous of the great success of Achilles in comparison to his own success. Agamemnon realizes that Achilles will now have more honor than him, so in turn Agamemnon demands Achilles war prize. Thus, while Homer appears to be portraying the fight between these two men as one over armies and authority, this argument is truly

When it comes to fighting, Achilles is the best. No man can best him, and any army with him in their ranks has very good odds of winning. On the other hand, his sense of duty is overshadowed by his arrogance. He fights for the Greeks, but doesn’t obey King Agamemnon as a subject. When Agamemnon steals his prize, Briseis, he gets upset and doesn’t fight, causing a loss in the Greek army. Achilles declares, “What a worthless, burnt-out coward I'd be called if I would submit to you and all your orders, whatever you blurt out. Fling them at others, don’t give me commands!” (Homer, 104) Though Achilles is the mightiest warrior alive, he is unreliable, compulsive to every whim and feeling of discontent. Hector, on the contrary, is
The Trojan men’s kelios (honor and reputation) would be highly boosted if they were the one to slay great Achilles, dear to Zeus. Despite knowing that the armor would put a bullseye on his head, Patroclus implores Achilles to give Achilles’ fine armor as Patroclus cares more about the greater picture of the war rather than his own selfish desires. Welding Achilles’ armor, Patroclus successfully repels the wave of Trojan warriors back to the trenches of Troy.
She talks Achilles into using his words to fight Agamemnon instead of his sword. To obey the gods Achilles verbally lashes him calling him a drunkard and a coward who stays behind the fight letting other men die while he reaps the glory because he feared death even though he will take the prize of any man that disagrees with him. He will not fight any more and that Agamemnon has brought the destruction of the Greek army on himself for failing to honor the best of the Greek warriors. He would give up Briseis because it was Agamemnon that gave her to him but if he touched anything else of his he would kill him. Achilles gave up Briseis to Agamemnon’s men telling them that one day they would need his help for their leader didn’t know how to see how his actions affected everyone. In the movie of Troy after taking the beach outside of the city of Troy Achilles is given Briseis as his prize of honor the leaders met together giving gifts to Agamemnon. Achilles spoke to the king telling him that he had won a victory that day. Agamemnon told him that he had won the beach of Troy from Prium that morning, that history remembers kings not warriors and even though he was there to fight for the continuation of his name his wouldn’t be the one who was remembered. Achilles tells him to be careful because he needs to win the war first. Agamemnon recounts that Achilles men had taken the temple of Apollo. Achilles tells him that he can take all of the gold for
