War - a multifaceted mechanism by which power changes hands, territorial boundaries are revised, and generations are lost – has been hypothesized to commence approximately 40,000-60,000 years ago, when Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens met in Africa and in the Middle East. Henceforth, warfare has surrounded human conflict- imparting benefits to the victors and treachery to the defeated. From the initial meeting in the Arabian Peninsula (Levant region) and Eastern Africa up to the First World War, warfare constantly adapted to meet the needs of its participants, each cohort edging to outreach the other in terms of technological advancements. Alongside the increased potency of warfare, militaristic strategy has coevolved to consider the technological character of rival states.
The war began with a grand wedding between Peleus, the son of Aeacus, and Thetis, the sea-goddess. Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited to the wedding. Enraged at this, she stormed into the wedding and threw a golden apple of discord on a table. The apple had the inscription “For the fairest” a quarrel soon arose between three powerful goddesses. The three goddesses; Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena all wanted the title of fairest. They wanted to Zeus to be the judge of this contest. Not wanting to be involved in the quarrel, Zeus sent Hermes to get Paris, the Trojan prince, so that he could judge the three ("History of the Trojan War").
The Greek forces won the Trojan War. The story of the war is a cornerstone of Greek legend, and pervaded Greek literature and culture. Though the evidence for the Trojan War as historical fact is scarce, it was a formative event in Greek cultural memory, producing some of the classical world’s most famous heroes and narratives. The War was won, Helen was retrieved from Paris, whose violation of ξενία was redressed, the heroes attained the κλέος that many of them fought for – and yet the positive outcomes of the Trojan War are difficult to grasp. For the victims of the Trojan War, the tragedy is obvious; the War ended in genocide and total cultural destruction. But such a war, burnt into legend, should have left the victors far better off; and yet, the Greek heroes only suffer because of it. They die tragic, dishonourable deaths; their households are left in ruin; their families are torn apart. From both modern and classical perspectives, the Trojan War is a tragedy, a “harrowing destruction of life” (Euripides, Andromache, 291). The victory is pyrrhic, the loss of life is horrific, the reparations non-existent.
Warfare and violence has been a part of human life since before history was recorded. As time goes, and war still is a part of life, there is an ongoing debate on whether war and violence are inevitable. War is clearly evitable with the way humans were in the past, as well as how their closest known biological relatives act. By examining history, as well as the looking at the behavioural evidence of other primates, it is clear that warfare and violence is not inevitable.
The Trojan War was commenced around 3000 BCE marking most memorable period in Greek Mythology. These events were presented in Homer’s lliad through poetry. The war began during the Bronze Age with Greeks and the defenders of the city of Troy fighting in Anatolia. Troy, today known as modern Turkey was in Anatolia i.e. at the eastern Shores of Aegean Sea. The city of Troy was colonized by 5000-10000 Trojans and was attacked many times by 5000 Mycenaeans who had crossed the Aegean Sea in hundred ships. Around 1200 BCE the city was destroyed by Mycenaean Greeks. The war was sophisticated to higher level by tactics and Magnificent Armors. Mycenaean Greece came under attack by both land and sea around 1200 BCE. (Dutton Marchand Harkness 27)
With the state tournament less than one week away the Trojans 12 year old team was being told that they can’t win. But they knew they could and the coaches believed that to. But it would take hard work and determination. That is exactly what the Trojans have.
It seems as if humans do not have respect for each other. People in different societies start wars in order to gain power or eliminate a potential threat. These wars were made possible because of technology and transporting. As technology and transport began to develop, the wars have started to become more of a bloodbath. According to the author of Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond, it is believed that, “Technology, in the form of weapons and transport, provides the direct means by which certain people have expanded their realms and conquered other peoples”(Diamond 241). Technology is the source of many weapons that were ever used for war. Even the nuclear weapons the America uses now. In order for the military or even regular civilians
During the Trojan War, the gods were viewed as powerful but they were also divided and limited. While the gods were viewed as powerful during the Trojan War , they were also divided amongst which god was on the side of the Trojans or the Greeks. Before the war started, three goddesses have been trying to decide who was the most beautiful. The choices were Aphrodite, Hera, or Athena, they asked Zeus and he told them about Paris considering that he is a great judge of beauty. Once the goddesses found Paris, each were trying to bribe him with the best thing the goddess could provide.
In “The Trojan Women,” there are four enduring women who dominate the play and only two men who say anything at all. Moving us with their rants and dramatic reactions, these women engulf the audience in overwhelming grief and irresistible pride. Euripides emphasizes these four women to help us understand one of his main themes. Hecuba with her pride, Cassandra with her virginity and uncanny wisdom, Andromache with her misery and heartache, and Helen with her powerful, seductive reasoning all represent superior illustrations of feminism throughout the play.
The Trojan War started at the wedding of King Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons and the sea nymph named Thetis. When Eris, the daughter of Zeus wasn’t invited to the wedding, she was angered and discord the banquet hall in the formed a golden apple, inscribed with the words “for the fairest”, then throw it among the guests. The goddesses argue over who deserves the apple. Goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite each thought that she was the fairest out of all. They asked Zeus to decide who is the fairest. Zeus didn’t want to get involved, so he sent a prince named Paris, the son of King Priam of Troy in Anatolia to be the judge because he was the most honest person on earth (or he was too stupid to know the dispute between the goddess). The goddesses
The Trojan War is described as one of histories most legendary battles. This battle is told to have lasted ten years, resulting in the eventual collapse of Troy, under the siege of Greek forces. Modern knowledge of the Trojan War has survived mainly through the account given in Homer’s Illiad, and while having proved to be a rich source of inspiration for other writers, artists, and even filmmakers in recent history, much speculation still exists surrounding his account. I will analyze modern interpretations of the Trojan War and examine both speculation and support for Homer’s account. Concluding with sufficient evidence that has been collected surrounding this epic battle, proving Homer’s account of a massive battle between these two powerful city states to not be just a tale of myth and legend, but actual history.
William Shakespeare's Macbeth is the original Game of Thrones – a dark epic tale of ambition, betrayal and murder set in the wilds of the Scottish highlands. A crucial scene occurs towards the end of the play, were Macbeth is finally brought up to the correct punishment for his crimes. In this day and age, however, his actions would have branded him a psychotic serial killer, leaving him to wrestle with the monumental consequences that are established for him from a proceeding legal war. So today, I will present the case that follows the beheading of King Macbeth, where I, the prosecuting lawyer, put forward the case that justifies the murder of Macbeth, and charges him as a guilty tyrant.
Over the past years a lot of archaeological and literary evidence has helped us gain a better understanding of the history of Troy. Much hard work has gone into the excavations there by many archaeologists, and many interesting artefacts have been found. The story of the Ancient City of Troy is a great one, however many people believed it didn’t exist and that Homers Iliad, the story of the Trojan War was just some story. This has since been proved untrue as the city of Troy was discovered, and the pieces of this amazing puzzle have fallen together. Homer described Troy as an exceptionally large city with large high powerful walls, wide streets, twisting paths and large houses. Some of the archaeologists that have contributed to the
With these words he put heart and soul into them all. And now the Trojans would have been routed and driven back into Ilius, had not Priam's son Helenus, wisest of augurs, said to Hector and Aeneas, "Hector and Aeneas, you two are the mainstays of the Trojans and Lycians, for you are foremost at all times, alike in fight and counsel; hold your ground here, and go about among the host to rally them in front of the gates, or they will fling themselves into the arms of their wives, to the great joy of our foes. Then, when you have put heart into all our companies, we will stand firm here and fight the Danaans however hard they press us, for there is nothing else to be done. Meanwhile do you, Hector, go to the city and tell our mother what is happening.
I found the article to be very informative and fascinating in its exploration of human warfare. Archeological evidence suggests that human warfare was nonexistent prior to 10,000 ago. Culturally, we are all taught that humans are violent and that they have always been warring since their existence. The article brings the evidence that is not so. Humans started warfare after their socio-economic systems became more complex and they were shortages for resources. It’s counter-intuitive but it turns out that humans started warfare after the introduction of agriculture in societies. Wealthier the societies got, more they fought instead of less. I think it is a riveting example of human psychology. When we have more resources to go around and more
