What do you think about Ulysses? Is he a hero or a zero? I think Ulysses is a hero because he risked his life to fight and he wanted to get home to his wife the whole time he was away. One rationale why Ulysses is a hero is that he fought bravely in the Trojan War, helping to win the war for the Greeks. He also persisted in his journey to get home to rule his people in Ithaca, despite many roadblocks and dangers. He fiercely defended himself and his crew against enemies, both human and supernatural. Other people say “He is very self-centered and very obnoxious to his men”. Ulysses doesn't know his own faults, while he recognizes other people's flaws and reacts harshly to his crew member's flaws. I can see that Ulysses is truly loyal to Penelope because he leaves Ogygia as soon as possible, puts all of his effort into making it home to his wife, and even flirts with Princess Nausicaa to get him home. He was constantly longing for her. He always brought up his wife in situations with other women. He begged both Circe and Calypso at different times to go back home to the island of Ithaca, his wife Penelope, and his son Telemachus. Ulysses said, “I am quite aware that my wife Penelope is nothing like as tall or as beautiful as yourself. She is only a woman, whereas you are immortal. Nevertheless, I want to get home, and can think of nothing else.” Ulysses said this to Calypso, proving that he wants more than anything to return home to her. Odysseus has the same affectionate and loyal personality, and he exhibits it when he finally embraces Penelope after 20 long years of separation. In “Fagles” on page 388, the author states, “The more she spoke, the more a deep desire for tears welled up inside his breast, he wept as he held the wife he loved, the soul of loyalty, in his arms at last.” This shows that Ulysses was truly compassionate when meeting his wife again after two decades. There is a good amount of faithfulness shown by several characters. Faithfulness is shown through Ulysses with his crew and family, Athena, and Penelope herself.
