My father was born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico. When I was a kid, he would always tell me many stories about it and explain how beautiful and amazing it was. My dad would always describe it with such a delicate touch that urged me to want to visit it so bad. However, my actual trip to Mexico was something far different from what I imagined. Although my family always described the perfect perspectives of the Mexico my dad grew up in with the best views and the best people, it was not the same Mexico that I went to go visit this summer.
I always imagined the warmth of a town, like feeling at ease and at home. With humble people who take care of their belongings and are generous to those around them. I pictured the kindest people who never thought

Personally, I live in a state that has little wilderness, mountaintown's, forest, etc., therefore, it has been a lifelong dream of mine to have the availability to not only visit the three states that I have chosen but to also take my children to experience this with me. Due to having family who lives in Wyoming and Montana luckily they are so kind to share photos of both states with my children and me. However, I do not have family living in New Mexico, although I was lucky enough in high school to have a friend move from New Mexico and allowed me to see many pictures, nonetheless, this has been a dream of mine to someday make it to New Mexico.
Waving goodbye from the backseat of the car, as we pull out of my parent’s driveway. Looking out the window at the oddly, white shaped clouds. Thinking, I had never been away from my parents and my younger sister for so long, even though it was only for two weeks. I was excited and scared all at once, but I wasn’t too thrilled about the whole 29-hour drive there. Hoping that the trip would go well and nothing bad will happen to us.
Every year I go to Mexico, during spring break and summer. It's always relaxing laying on the beach or going on a nice refreshing swim in the 70 degree water. It was an average day down in mexico during the summer of 2017; I remember my family and I relaxing at home after a long day on the boat. I was feeding the street dog because I could tell she was either having puppies, or already had puppies. She was starving to death, her ribs were showing, I knew I had to help her. I started feeding her three times a day so she could start producing milk if she’s already had the puppies; or so she could keep the puppies healthy while she was still pregnant. A few days later I walked outside to feed her, and I hear whimpering like the sound newborn puppies
In today’s society Dieting and Exercise are very important in obtaining good health. Regular exercise has been long associated with fewer visits to the doctor, hospitalization and medication. Stomach cells regulate several functions such as sensation, motility, secretion, absorption, local immune defense and also your food intake. Many physicians today use dieting as an intervention to overcome health disorders and diseases such as crohns disease. Crohns disease is a chronic disorder that is associated with inflammation of the digestive tract. Over half a million Americans men and women have been diagnosed with crohns disease. Crohns disease is the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorder, with a prevalence of 5% to 11%, and is associated with high cost of health care and reduced quality of life (Ligaarden & Farup 2011). Some environmental factors such as dietary factors and psychological stress can play a huge role on the clinical course of crohns Disease. More than two thirds of subjects with CD relate their symptoms to the intake of food, leading most patients to modify their diets ( Ligaarden & Farup 2011). Psychological stress has played a role in causing
Commuting to Tamazula, Mexico to convert the urban decay and decrepit slums into regenerated habitable communities, taught me a cosmopolitan comprehension of the meaning of community. While visiting my grandmother in Tamazula, I became aware of a substantial community who continually lost their homes to the failed war on drugs. Prodded by my mother, I traveled multiple times a year at a young age to work the sugar cane plantations which lay in the underbelly of Mexico's crime ridden ghost towns in order to make enough money to transform the village into one that parallels the proverbial "city upon a hill". What started as an act of charity induced by a sense of duty, developed into an all consuming and burning desire to participate in every
The City of God is based on actual events that occurred in Rio de Janeiro during the 1960's and 1970's. The movie is about the rise and fall of a fearsome sociopath gang leader Li'l Ze, who reigned as king of the drug lords during the 70's. The first part of the movie illustrates some of the forces that mold Li'l Ze into the man he becomes, while the second half shows his ruthless leap to power, followed by the war he wages against opposing gang leaders Carrot and Knockout Ned. The film is narrated by Rocket, a photographer who exists on the outskirts of Li'l Ze's circle of dominance and control. In the film the city is filled with ruthless acts of
During the summer my family and me went on vacation to mexico to see my grandma at her house it took us 2 days to get to her town is mexico when we got there is was 11 at night my uncle opened the garage door to let us in when we got off the car my grandma opened the door to let us in her house she gave everyone a hug the her and my mom started to cook food for everyone. After everyone got their suitcases out of the car and took them to there room my mom and dad slept in one room, my sister and her daughter slept in another room and my nephew and me slept in the living room. The next day my dad showed me around the town he grew up in where his other family members who lived there, and his aunt who owns a store on the corner of the street. When
Someone once told me “Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.” I guess it wasn’t important to me at the time and therefore I chose to ignore it, little I knew the wisdom these words carried.
In the first place, 1930 was hard for most people even though I hadn’t experienced it but my family and I were one of the survivors that lived thanks to my father. My Father died during the dust bowl due to pneumonia. Since my father died my mom is a single parent so I have to go to school. I go to school with a trash bag and out of nowhere people start calling me names like mentally retarded, but I don't care because they are the rich kids here. A few have passed and I started to do things like work go to school and other stuff people do. During the time of school I had better grades than all the students in my class, but one thing that was hard and distracting was my teacher. Sometimes she’d get mad at other students then she would get mad
Growing up in an area with a large Mexican community I never really understood how much my culture means to me. I grew up with the stories my dad and grandfather would tell me about my ancestors. My people were the raiders from the hills of Mexico City and that we were a family of warriors. I never held much weight to the warrior part of my grandfather’s stories but I did know that my great grandfather was a fighter. He left Mexico and rode the train up to Denton Texas and sold tamales on the square his entire life. He fought to give my grandfather a better life here. I don’t talk about my dad’s side of the family much, in this day in age being seen as white has more advantages than being seen as Mexican. This thought changed as I came to
Mexico represent a lot to me. My family moved to Mexico when I was only 6 years old, I went to school there and spent most of my childhood and teenage years in this remarkable and beautiful country. For those and many other reasons I still have lots of good friends and family who live there. The connections are inevitable. I feel culturally connected and one of the things I miss the most is walking around the narrow streets of the towns I grew up and talking to the most friendly people around the neighborhoods buying and trying all sorts of street foods or little cravings (antojitos) as they called them in Mexico. The warm climate and going to the beach almost every week was always a plus and something to remember, since I lived near the ocean.
“Come on guys, going to be late”, my brothers told me and my sister as well as my sister in law. Running down our long stairs in Mexico. Wishing I could live there, but things aren’t as they were before. Wearing long brown boots and all dressed up to go watch the bulls. Walking for about 10 minutes to get there, stopped by my cousin’s store get get some drinks. Finally got there with my family. Trying to get a spot to sit at for a nice view.
Before I came to Oaxaca, I had no idea what to expect. I knew very little about Mexico besides the typical stereotypes and some vague ideas about immigration, drug cartels, and Aztec pyramids. So my stay here in Oaxaca has most definitely been an eye-opening experience. Not only has Expediciones Sierra Norte allowed me to gain some much-needed experience in the field that I hope to work in some day, but I have also learned a lot about community structures and lifestyles that are alternative to the individualist, capitalist model that predominates in western industrialized society. More than anything, I’ve learned that Mexico is not a homogenous culture but an amalgamation of opposite ideas: old and new, tradition and modernity, indigenous
“Wow, you are so rich”, these words have been repeated many times by close friends and relatives. I am perceived as a rich and spoiled girl who sleeps on top of a pile of money and lives in a mansion in the United States. As much as I would like to live up to that assumption, in reality, I am just a middle class citizen that lives in a small town. Yes, we have cars and a big house, but we are not loaded with money. In the country of Mexico I have had numerous occurrences where its citizens have seen me differently, not a Mexican, but as an American.
