Trebonianus Gallus: Third Century Roman Emperor
Trebonianus Gallus was appointed as the emperor after the previous emperor Decius was killed by the Goths. Gallus was made emperor by his soldiers and his first act as emperor he made a truce with the Goths letting them return home with their plunder and prisoners, agreeing to pay them if they did not attack them again. Gallus then quickly marched back to Rome, hoping to secure his position as emperor by assuring good relations with the senate. After Gallus returned to Rome he appointed Decius’ younger son Hostilianus as Augustus to stand alongside Gallus as his imperial colleague. In order not to aggravate Decius’ widow, Gallus did not elevate his wife, Baebiana, to the rank of Augusta. Gallus’
The goldenrod gall fly (or Eurosta solidaginis) is a parasite whose life depends upon and revolves around the goldenrod plant. After mating, the female gall fly uses its ovipositor (structure used to inject eggs into a plant) to insert its eggs into the stem of a goldenrod plant. After about ten days, the fly larvae hatch and begin to eat the inside of the plant. The saliva of the larva contains a chemical that causes the plant to swell, creating what is known as a gall; this serves as a food source and a protective shell for the growing larva. When fall approaches, the larva digs an escape tunnel by which it will later exit the gall as an adult; however, the larva does not complete the tunnel, instead it leaves a thin membrane of plant material for protection (Abrahamson & Heinrich, n.d.). E. solidaginis larvae then pupate in late winter or early spring, and leave the gall as adults soon afterwards (Abrahamson, Sattler, McCrea, & Weis, 1989). Once freed from the gall,
Marcus Ulpius Trajanus, better known as Trajan, was a Roman emperor from 98 AD until his death on August 9, 117 AD. He was born on September 18, 53 AD in Italica Spain, where he lived with his mother, Marcia and his father, also named Marcus Ulpius Trajanus. In fact, this bat has two large glands on each side of the muzzle. Their body length can range from 90-115 mm, and their wingspan ranging from 297-329 mm in length. The typical weight of this bat is 5-13 g. The Corynorhinus Townsendii has brown and/or gray hairs and ears that can grow 25+ mm in length.
Cyriacus Pizzecolli was a true Renaissance man. At age 30 he felt the calling preserve the history around him that he saw being ruined right before his eyes. As an international trader and traveler he knew first hand why the ancient remains were being destroyed, wether it be from poor construction and improper maintenance to people stealing the items. He had a passion for preserving ancient history few others shared, and he knew that if he didn't do something to preserve it, no one would. When Cyriacus “noticed” the “Arch of Trajan” in his hometown he began to wonder what possible secrets it could hold to the birth and history of his city, Ancona. The discovery of what kind of history his own town might have lead him on a life-long journey to learn the history of other cities and the stories they are able to tell.
International trade has been known as the backbone of of the evolving world. As commercialization begins to form, nations need a way to form relationships between companies and manufactures. Individual countries trade with one another in order to meet the needs of its population. If the country’s needs are not met within the country’s border, that country can then seek assistance from other countries. Through the production of surplus resources, a country can acquire the resources needed to keep moving forward. The micronation of Tyrus is built upon a five acres lot. Within the five acres lot there are very little foliage and space for agriculture or manufacturing. Tyrus can use international trade as a method of accumulating needed resources
In the marine lab, there is a Texas Cichlid named Kevin or Texas Toast. It is also known as “Herichthys cyanoguttatu” (Sharpe, William). It was brought to Europe in 1912 and it’s the only cichlid that is found in the United States (Sharpe, William). The Texas cichlid is now in the northern part of Texas to Florida mostly due to people getting rid of the fish because they don’t want to take care of it anymore (Sharpe, William). It is a favorite fish to catch (Sharpe, William). The Texas cichlid is normally in the lower portion of the Rio Grande Drainage (Berg, William).
The Trobriands consist of four main islands located off the coast of Eastern New Guinea. The most populated of the four islands is Kiriwina that has 60 villages that house 1200 individuals (Peters-Golden, 2009). The Trobianders are a horticultural society that focuses on the production of yams. This essay focuses yams being a symbol of relationships, power, and wealth for the Trobianders over the past century.
The anteaters are animals that fed on insects, specifically termites, insects that fed on the wood of trees. The reasons on how both creatures came to be and why the termites are preyed upon the anteaters originate from the actions of Queen Termes and her city of Termitaria.
Hemigrapsus sanguineus, commonly known as the Asian Shore Crab, has been a major player in the evolution of certain defenses of New England bivalve molluscs. Mytilus edulis, the New England blue mussel, has been directly impacted by the predation of the Asian Shore Crab. H. sanguineus is an invasive species to the Atlantic coast of the United States. It first appeared in the southern New England area in 1988, presumably by trade ships from the Western Pacific. It has since spread to the south Atlantic and is still expanding slowly northward as well (Stokstad, 2006). Introductions to new areas by humans allow for species who would never cross evolutionary paths to do just that. These new interactions provide a new framework and environment for novel selection pressures to present themselves. These strong selection pressures are a piece of the puzzle for the evolutionary change of heritable traits to occur (Freeman and Byers 2006).
A member of Roman political elite born in Gallia, Gnaeus Julius Agricola pursued several positions and a political career in Rome and other provinces of the country. He held a high office and had a lengthy public service, but he is mostly known because of his son-in-law, Tacitus writings, who wrote about his great leadership on every front.
Considering I did not visit my spot at all over Winter Break, this had been the longest period of time I had been away from the area. This was good as it lent itself well to some new insights. After colder nights and more snow, the area looked a lot more broken down than it had in the past. The Birdsfoot Trefoil was the most broken down and dry I have seen it since I began photographing the spot. There also appeared to be less debris, in the form of dead grasses and leaves, surrounding the area. The grass and surrounding area appeared more worn down and I wonder if this is from increased human activity around the area. I found this interesting, as I believe it speaks to the natural resources, natural capital, and natural income of the area.
In 28AD, when Julia was 13 years old, she was betrothed to Domitius Ahenobarbus and later married him. In 39AD, Julia, Livilla, and their cousin were involved in a plot to murder Caligula and make Lepidus, Drusilla's widower, the new Emperor but the there plot did not work resulting in failure. Caligula had Lepidus executed as he did not want him as a threat and later made sure that Julia and Livilla were exiled to Pandateria which is now a part of the Pontine Islands. In 41AD,

The saltwater crocodile is huge even exceeding the Komodo Dragon size but to be exact the females attain lengths of 3 metres (10 ft) and males 3-6m (10-19.5 ft) but there have been are specimens of 10.6m (27 ft). With there big appearance the Crocodylus Porosus has large heads, a pair of ridges run from the eyes to the centre of the snout, eyes ears and nostrils located on the top of the head allowing it to see hear and smell normally.
Although animals have adapted to many different environments, there is one that trumps them all: the tardigrade. Commonly called water bears and sometimes moss piglets, tardigrades are able to endure many environmental stresses, such as dehydration and extreme temperature changes (Herkewitz). They can even survive in space (Herkewitz)! This essay will prove that the tardigrade is the most resilient animal on earth and give a glimpse into the everyday life of a tardigrade.
