How Did the Treaty of Versailles Help Cause World War II? The Treaty of Versailles was a treaty signed by the allied nations of Great Britain, France, and the United States. It placed all blame from World War I onto Germany. The Treaty of Versailles placed many restrictions, punishments, and reparations on Germany. These conditions were unfair to Germany, and they lit a burning fire of anger in the Germans. This anger and desperate wish for rebellion against the Treaty of Versailles caused World War II. After World War I, Germany experienced lots of territorial losses due to the Treaty of Versailles. “Germany lost the entirety of Alsace and Lorraine to the treaty, having to give them over to Belgium and France.” (Document A) The loss of land, …show more content…

Germany had lots of reparations to pay back after World War I. It caused Germany to fall into deep debt. In article 232 of the Treaty of Versailles, it states that “Germany will make compensation for all the damage done to the civilian population and the property of the Allied and Associated Powers.” (Document C) This ‘compensation’ was to have Germany pay a total of three-hundred and sixty-seven billion dollars in reparations. After World War I, all blame was placed onto Germany, and they were given a “war guilt clause.” In article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles, it states that Germany “accepts the responsibility for causing all the loss and damage to the Allied and Associated Governments of WW.” (Document D) Many Germans, including Hitler, saw this ‘clause’ as an atrocious injustice and an evil thing, insinuating many riots.
