Toni Morrison’s Beloved memory is such a strong influence on the characters’ lives, it becomes a character itself. Beloved is a spirit created by the characters to help them deal with and overcome the past. Beloved has a crippling power over the character Sethe, her mother. Sethe is in a self-imposed prison of memories. Sethe’s traumatic past and memories have a lasting effect on herself and her daughter Denver. In this novel, Beloved brings back traumatic memories that affect Sethe and Denver, but ultimately Beloved allows Sethe to deal with her traumatic past and move forward to have a future. When describing Beloved parasite nature Morrison states, “She took the best of everything and the more she took, the more Sethe began to talk, explain, describe, how much she had suffered, been through, for her children, waving away flies in grape arbors, crawling on her knees…” (Morrison 284). This shows the pain that Sethe had been through and how beloved brings back the burden of her past. Sethe’s daughter Denver was also burdened by her mother’s past. Because Beloved allowed Denver to understand her mother’s past, “Denver knew it was on her. She would have to leave the yard; step of the edge of the world, leave the two behind and go ask somebody for help”(Morrison 286). Denver begins to understand that her mother needs to be saved from Beloved which is a major step in helping her mom move forward from her past. Morrison describes Sethe and Denvers break with the past when she describes, “Standing alone on the porch, Beloved is smiling. But now, her hand is empty. Sethe is running away from her and she feels the emptiness in the hand seethe had been holding. She is running into the faces of the people out there, and leaving Beloved behind. Then Denver, running too (Morrison 309). As Sethe unshackles herself from the past she has taken ownership of herself. Beloved has ultimately helped her become free.
Memory and trauma have a huge impact on Sethe and Denver in this novel. Sethe’s traumatic past and the memories it brings create a difficult life for not only herself but Denver too. Beloved brings back those awful memories for Sethe but ultimately allows for her to face her past and move on in the end.
