It was a cold winter day when I was called out to the scene. I arrived at a high school, there was a dead biology teacher with multiple stab wounds in the neck and chest. In this article “How Safer Streets Can Thwart Terrorists” written by Yonah Freemark, educates us about multiple terrorist attacks that have occurred specifically in the New York area and how the state is working to develop a safer approach. In May of 2017 at Times Square a motorist drove through a large crowd killing one person and injuring many others. Had it not been for a three foot guarding rail, the motorist could have killed many more. Another attack like this happened previously where an average of sixteen pedestrians were killed and since then have doubled. New York is not only the victim of these kind of attacks; famous places like France, Netherlands, and London constantly have attacks like these happen.

Little is known of the northern end of Manhattan, as on a map it appears as more parkland than actual land. On a subway map, it only shows three running lines the A, C, and 1 train with about 4 stops each. Washington Heights is a vibrant neighborhood located in Upper Manhattan, starting from 155th street up to 190th street between Harlem and Inwood. Washington Heights has five main avenues. There is Fort Washington, Broadway, Wadsworth, St. Nicholas, and Amsterdam. As one walks down these avenues, they might notice a difference.

In reading the 2011 New York Times article “At Front of Brooklyn Bus, a Clash of Religious and Women’s Rights”, author Christine Haughney brings to light a situation regarding a Brooklyn bus which is most commonly used to transport Hasidic Jews throughout the city, and while the bus is occasionally patronized by those who aren’t of the Jewish faith, traditional rules involving the separation of men and women are expected to be followed by all riders regardless of religious background. Not surprisingly, this is a complicated situation with concerns of religious and gender discrimination for both Jewish patrons and non-Jewish patrons, along with the responsibility of local government to protect and respect all involved. The city I chose is New York. The one transportation is the Elevated train. The New York have this in 1868. At 1903 the train don’t used manrai it changed to electric power and is is a clean ride. The Elevated train is also known as El rail.

New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low-income neighborhoods that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times Square. As New York City may be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City’s infrastructure funding is limited in lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist’s areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low-income area infrastructure problems that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn, and South Bronx are low-income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads, plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crime and arrests.

The New York City Subway System has an extremely rich and detailed history that dates to the late nineteenth century. Before the system that the public currently takes advantage of when they visit New York City, there were an extensive amount of public transportation options that were available to the general public. For example, horse and carriages, omnibuses, and trolley systems were all used as a means of transportation throughout the nineteenth century. Once the idea for a subway system to be built was introduced, most people did not believe that it was possible. However, they were soon proven wrong after Alfred E. Beach secretly built the first subway system that was used in New York City. Once people saw that subterranean travel was a viable means of transportation, it did not take long until the subway system that is used today to come along. The New York City subway system revolutionized the way the general public traveled throughout the city, and inspired other growing cities to build subterranean travel systems of their own.

Public transportation is serious need of a massive overhaul in this nation. We are in desperate need to catch up to the European standard of public transportation in this country. In Europe, citizens can travel across cities, bodies of water, and even counties with their state of the art public transportation system. Europeans are not nearly as reliant on cars and oil as the United States is because they have the much more practical option of taking the transportation provided to them by the government to where ever they need to go. They have set a model that the United States needs to strive for and meet in the near future.
