The difference between transcendental meditation and other types of meditation in default mode network like Focused attention lead to in the deactivation of DMN because this kind of meditation procedures involve goal-oriented attentional control. On the other hand, during transcendental meditation, the default mode network remains as it is.
To sum up, Transcendental Meditation uses a natural tendency of the brain to transcend which means that there is no need to try to manipulate the thought, it will become finer and finer by itself. Transcendentalism is to understand who oneself is by having confidence, free thought, and self-reliance. It is to isolate themselves from society and find themselves through nature, to find what they want and who they are. They must have self-reliance and leave the people they know, and isolate themselves from society, so they will not be told who they are or who they should be. Going into nature without the luxuries and only the essentials, confidence is imperative. They have to be confident in themselves to know they can survive on their own. Free thought is also crucial because they need to be able to live a simple life and explore new ways to live, while enjoying every second of it and making everything they do meaningful to them. Transcendentalism, like its name states, believed that the ultimate truth lies beyond and can be obtained through sense. It focused more on individual and self rather than authoritative religious practice to reach these truths. It brought a logical thinking pattern into religion and lifestyles of an American. People now believe that everyone has a potential in reaching the ultimate truth by good conduct. People now have a closer control of balancing emotion and spirit with reasonings and calculations.
Transcendentalism is a movement that started in the 19th century that pushed back on organized religion and made a lasting impact on the world of literature. This impact would trigger many different authors to write different literature about transcendentalism. Some of these works include Song of Myself by Whitman and Nature by Emerson, both of these works suggest on how a person can transcend, but in different ways. Emerson suggests that it is possible to transcend by shedding your physical body while Whitman suggests the human race can transcend while keeping their physical body.

With the fact that remained in history, the primary conception of transcendentalism was led by the unitarianism, the reaction to the strict Calvinism, which supported that people should live the spiritual life in terms of a continuing effort to cultivate one’s own spiritual resources. David Robinson explicated it in his article “Transcendentalism”:
According to Dictionary.com Transcendentalism is, “any philosophy based upon the doctrine that the principles of reality are to be discovered by the study of the processes of thought, or a philosophy emphasizing the intuitive and spiritual above the empirical”, but that’s only part of what Transcendentalism is. Transcendentalism is standing for One of the first people to write about Transcendentalism were Henry David Thoreau writer of “Resistance to Civil Government” and Ralph Waldo Emerson writer of “Nature” and “Self-Reliance”. Transcendentalism is defined as any philosophy based on the principles of reality being discovered by the study of the thought process. It is an ideal literary and philosophical movement during the middle of the 19th century. Transcendentalism in America was a very important movement philosophically and in terms of literature as it flourished during this time. This idea was based on monism which is believing that there is one God.
Meditation means to concentrate and connect with ones’ own mind, to explore identity and emotions in order to be aware of conscious, sub-conscious and unconscious thoughts. Meditation originates and has been has been practiced in Asia for thousands of years for different reasons such as increasing concentration abilities, religious purposes and also to train the mind. This essay will focus on how meditation affects brain plasticity (ability to change), emotionally and intellectually, leading to better performance and coping abilities in stressful situations. Things like attention span, memory functions and complexity of emotions will be further explored and may interest the reader since meditation can answer many questions on improving mental health that affects almost everyone. I will make the claim that meditation practice needs to be introduced early into educational institutions such as schools. Because evidence suggests that that meditation increases the volume of the cortex in the brain, leading to a higher and more powerful emotional intellect and cognition that improves things like memory, attention and emotional control. It is logical to assume that in order to alter thickness of cortex, mental thought functions and emotional strength, meditation should be introduced to children early in school for greater performance.
To understand the effects of mindfulness meditation we first must understand how it is practiced and what the purpose of this practice is. Throughout my research I have found many definitions of mindfulness meditation. Three of which I found to be helpful when understanding the research conducted on the psychological effects of mindfulness meditation. One article described it as “Generally defined to include focusing one’s attention in a nonjudgmental or accepting way on the experience occurring in the present moment”. (BELLIN, ZVI J 221) Another article described the practice as “A process that leads to a mental state characterized
Meditation is very difficult to describe and can only truly be explained once experienced. It is the practice of mental concentration leading ultimately through a sequence of stages to the final goal of spiritual freedom, nirvana. The purpose of Buddhist meditation is to free ourselves from the delusion and thereby put an end to both ignorance and craving. The Buddhists describe the culminating trance-like state as transient; final Nirvana requires the insight of wisdom. The exercises that are meant to develop wisdom involve meditation on the true nature of reality or the conditioned and unconditioned elements that make up all phenomena. The goal of meditation is to develop a concept in the mind.
