Preamble: It is at this point in American History that the new generations are growing and having their eyes pried open to the strict chains of the world around them. They are realizing how few opportunities the are given to express themselves, having been bound by social constructs and rigid expectations created by society at large. It is crucial that the children of the future can safely be themselves without the ridiculous “guidelines” that cage us in; we calls these gender normalities.
Philosophical Foundation: One may wonder why such an absurd declaration should be allowed, let alone exist. It is not at all affected by the idea that “boys like sports and cars” and “girls like dresses and dolls”. That is perfectly fine and not at all the issue at hand. Rather, it is the idea that it is equally accepted for girls to like sports and cars and for boys to like dresses and dolls as well. Children, adults, all people alike should be promised the ability to wear what they want, act how they are, and have interests pertaining to whatever they desire - without ridicule. It is this essential part of life, of figuring out who one is as they mature, this individuality, that that gives we the people the right to abandon gender norms and strive for a country where they can be who they want to be.

Our work to make everybody comfortable in their own skin has been nearly overshadowed by the set of unspoken lives that dictate what makes a girl a girl and a boy a boy, laws that dictate who is a girl, who is a boy, and laws that tells us that those are the only two
The 1920’s was a great and important decade for the United States. After World War I, the United States went through events and changes that, overall, made the United States a much better place to live. New advances in technology and industry improved American life in more ways than just one. Americans had better wages during this time, more leisure time, and overall, had a better life than ever before. In addition, the 1920’s advocated social and cultural change as well. During this time period, the United States did not return to Normalcy, and instead developed attitudes that changed the life of the people of the United States forever thanks to social changes, cultural changes and changes in technology.
Some believe parents need to be more accepting of what gender their child chooses to be. In Linda DiProperzio’s article, she quoted an associate professor of Women 's Studies at the University of California named Jane Ward, who stated, “Raising a child under these strict gender guidelines is denying them an entire world of colors--they become tracked into the characteristics of their biological sex.” (Par. 7) Moreover, it is stated that limiting the views of a child can, and will, drastically change them and their future self. Not allowing children to be creative in what they choose limits their mindset. It is even worse that these narrow-minded ideas are thought up and enforced by the
During the 1920’s the KKK displayed a strong power of continuity over the power of aberration. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Black Exclusion Act of 1849 began the use of prejudice and intolerances within the Pacific Northwest. The KKK used those Acts as a step and sustained the route. Throughout time the KKK definitely exemplified the use of exclusion, nativism, xenophobia, racism, and colonization. The list of people and or traits one had often exceeded what was viewed as wholesome. The pre-existing Act’s provided an area for the KKK to flourish along with the common white mans participation in the government and guidelines. In Oregon we have quite the diverse community, however, there is a lack of cultural diversity here compared
Our society’s gender roles are constantly evolving and changing, all in the name of “progressive thinking”, though not all for the good. With a new “social norm” appearing every few years or so, it comes as a surprise that it
Sectionalism of the 1850’s was due to the dissimilarities between the North and South that caused drastic tension. The clash was not due to any one single issue, but to the general incompatibility itself. The primary reason that the United States was faced with disunity was because these disparate regions faced a rivalry about slavery. This was the foundation that effected the controversial cultural, economic, and political views and policies of the regions. It brought these groups to a rivalry with one another.
This book explores the reader to rethink their opinions on social and physical normality. The title suggests that normality shouldn’t be defined so critically and that those of diversity and marginalization should be included. In this instance, the focus is upon the normalcy of those who are transgender. “One image of us that went viral showed us standing in our bathing suits with the caption: ”Does this couple look normal? Because they are.” The intention of the caption may have been good, but what did it even mean by normal? That we passed as cisgender? Were heterosexual?? White? Able-bodied? Attractive? If one of us hadn’t been any of those things, would they still have called us normal?” pg
The 1920’s was a time for advancement, full of many influences that have effected times today including the development of the organization the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or, NAACP. In the August of 1908 in the city of Springfield, Illinois a two day riot of several thousand white citizens ensued due to the rising of racial equality (“Springfield Race Riot”). This riot resulted in the death of two elderly African Americans by lynching along with innocent people being shot, stores being looted and, homes being burned (“Springfield Race Riot”). The creators of the NAACP took this event along with our nation's history as a cry for help and need for racial justice. The beginning of the 20th century was full of new idea’s but the NAACP organizers knew that it was lacking racial justice.
Renowned op-ed writer Claire Cain Miller in one of her articles, "Boys and Girls, Constrained by Toys and Costumes" brings our attention to the distinction between boys and girls for choices, this difference leads to the long-term notion of gender roles in the minds of the children. Claire's article is trying to sensitize the general public against gender difference. She tries to be sentimental by pointing out that the gender war started long before we were born, thus having the presence of a gaunt definition of what is for girls and what is for boys.
I think Porter should inform the president and work together to resolve the issues within the Slade Plating Department. They need to ensure equity among the employees, good morale and ethics, employee satisfaction, and the unification of the company. I would advise Porter to have the supervisor, Otto Schell stay later to make sure that dishonesty is not present. Not only would he help establish equity within the company, in which everyone is paid for the hours worked, but he would also be able to watch his brother Herman, and make sure he is not slacking off. However, if Otto is too busy, then I would suggest Porter to assign Sarto the job to stay and punch everyone’s cards. Because Sarto is known for his leadership skills and is highly respected,
Just as time passes by, the world has progressed in extraordinary ways through disobedience. It may seem as a bad action, but when there is inequality or immoral regulations that put certain people in danger one action is necessary, disobedience. Would our Nation be in its current state if it weren’t for our forefathers who obtain independence from Britain, woman who fought for the right to vote, and individuals like Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi who defied the authority in order to obtain change for freedom and equality?
The 1920’s was a decade that was different from all the others. People and companies moved away from large cities to smaller towns because of the automobile. The economy was booming and American’s bought things like crazy. There was an increase in productivity because of electricity and things like cars, radios, phones, and washing machines were introduced. Movies became the most popular pastime during this decade. Prohibition did not work in this decade and crime went unnoticed. This decade showed a mass amount of political and social change which caused it to be much different than any other.
The motto of the United States of America is "E Pluribus Unum" meaning Out of one, many'. It neatly recognises that although America may be a single nation, it is also one originally made up of immigrants who arrived not only from Europe and Asia, but forcibly as slaves from Africa and of Native Americans. It's population is the most racially and culturally diverse in the world and for that reason is often referred to as a "Melting Pot".
Beginning with Burts' piece On Growing up between Genders, I felt very saddened by the immediate wanting of approval they seemed to crave so desperately from the world. This feeling of so badly wanting to be accepted by others is something very familiar to myself, and a topic that is so current in our world today, as I can speak for
From the beginning of life, we are coached to believe that by being a female, there are certain rules we must follow. As infants it begins with the color of our clothing, pinks for girls. We are pretty in pink and as we grow we are given toys that reinforce how we develop. From kitchen sets to baby dolls, we are shaped into society’s view of womanhood.
Did you know that kids every year are sent home from school because they were wearing “the wrong type of clothing,” for example a boy wearing pink boots or a girl wearing a football jersey? You could be curious why, or just concerned about how stupid this sounds. This is an example of gender roles and how they need to be loosened to protect our freedom of expression and our choice of how we lead our lives. The gender roles that are considered normal today could be represented as two parallel pink and blue lines, not ever coming together to form a different color. The purpose of this paper is about how gender roles have been enforced throughout time, but this enforcement has begun to become unhealthy for men and women of all ages. I
