Critical Response: Tough Love
Parenting styles have always been a hot topic and every couple has different ideas on how they should raise their children. Studies have been done to see which style works the best and has the greatest outcome on the child. Of the four styles that were tested, Tough Love, Laissez faire, Authoritarian, and Disengaged, Tough Love came out on top and Laissez faire came in second. Of the outcomes of the children and judging by their level of success in jobs and happiness. 26% of the children raised by tough love standards came out of the top 20% of children’s outcomes. The reason for this would be that the tough love style of parenting offers the best combinations of love and authority while still allowing the children
A parent’s parenting styles are as diverse as the world we live in today. Nowadays, parents only want what is best for their children and their parenting styles plays a crucial role in the development of children which will in the long run, not only effect the child’s childhood years, but later prolong into their adult life as well.
The authoritative parenting style is the “In between,” of both the authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, and has a “Give and take approach.” Authoritative parents are very involved in their children’s lives: children help around the home and in decision-making processes, and homework is supervised. This approach to parenting raises children who are responsible, well behaved in school, have a high self-esteem, and good problem solving skills along with decision making skills. The authoritative approach to parenting has very positive effects on children’s lives presently, and in the future. (Marsiglia, C.,Walczyk, J., Buboltz, W., Ross, D. 2007).
Edgar Allen Poe and Charlotte Perkins Gilman depict a digression of humanity and sanity. Poe presents the downfall of Fortunato in “A Cask of Amontillado, and Gilman presents the same of John in “A yellow Wallpaper”, yet it is out of out of their own undoing. Each of their downfall is at the expense of themselves, yet it is at the hands of another. Neither character realizes the everlasting consequences of their own actions. Fortunato is arrogant and belittles those around him while John fails to understand or even listen to his own wife. They each regard their positions in the highest esteem, and neither John nor Fortunato ever give heeding to anyone they consider below them. This is their gravest mistake and the cause of their destruction. Both stories create a sense of duality, for within their actions, those around them are shaped in similar fashion. Jane and Montresor become mirror images of them. Poe and Gilman illustrate the grave consequences of one’s own action and its effect upon others which is exhibited through Fortunato’s and John’s position and interactions with others, Jane and Montresor’s reactions, and the consequences upon both pairs of characters.
There are many different parenting styles that help children develop healthy lifestyles. Dr. Levine focuses this chapter on the authoritarian, permissive and authoritative parents. The authoritarian parent, or the “do as your told” parent as stated in the book, focuses on strict rules for their children. These parents carry a strong “because I said so” ideology and end up hurting their kids more than they help. These kids end up with low self-esteem and high rates of depression. The permissive parent, or the “do your own thing” parent, focus more on a friendship with their child other than a respectful parent-child relationship. These parents have trouble disciplining their child and don’t teach their children correct skills to take responsibility for their actions. The last parenting style, the authoritative parent, are accepting of their child, but also have clear rules and expectations. These parents have appropriate discipline while also focusing on how to better their child. The children of these types of parents have better grades, better social skills and are all around happier. In this chapter, Dr. Levine also focuses on correct ways to be accepting and invested in your child and how important it is to praise effort instead of
According to Arnett’s book on human development, the four basic types of parenting styles that exist are categorized as neglectful, permissive, authoritative, and authoritarian. Ideally, according to Arnett’s findings, most parents should aim to be authoritative parents, meaning they should aim to posses essential qualities in order to ensure successful communication with their child. Authoritative parents are described as flexible with their children, supportive, and democratic. However, they should also be assertive, set boundaries, and have high standards for their children as well. Even though being an authoritative parent best possible way to raise a child, according to Arnett’s articles, many parents are still permissive and
Authoritarian is only one of three parenting styles that Baumrind details. The other two styles include authoritative and permissive. These two variations in parenting styles were seen in the way my relatives and friends’ parents approached parenting. I observed how the parents of my close friend handled parenting. They maintained control over aspects in my friend’s life like school and chores but allowed the freedom to make decisions in areas of social activities. The most striking difference between my parents and my friend’s is the use of reasoning and the expression of warmth. Her parents provided justification behind their commands and or punishments while maintaining a sense of love and affection. The bond and love that is evident between my friend and her parents is not as strong in the relationship between my parents and me. The style that her parents exhibit is known as authoritative because of their focus on some parental control, use of reasoning and warmth. While on the other hand, my cousins raised their children in a completely different manor using a permissive parenting style. While they provide obvious love and affection towards their children, they fail to exert control and regulations. They did not have any real sense of rules in their household. Their children tend to act and do whatever they wanted with little to no repercussions.
With over three hundred million Americans and over six billion people worldwide parenting skills are essential to maintain a healthy society. Parenting involves many aspects and requires many skills. It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct to develop fundamental skills children will need to be mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. There are four commonly identified parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Of the four parenting styles, two remain on opposite ends of the parenting spectrum. These two styles; authoritarian, and permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious behavior. As well
•After being away from Egypt for 40 years, Moses came back, because god freed us, Israelites, using Moses. Now that we are free, we are praising God. Oh No! Someone just looked behind us and saw Pharaoh’s army pursuing us, trying to take us captive again! What is Moses doing? He prayed and God spoke to him and told him what to do. Moses just lifted his staff over the Red Sea and the water is parting - now there is a path with no mud puddles. The path is completely dry. Quickly, all of us Israelites crossed the sea. After we crossed the sea, the Egyptians followed us. When all of the Egyptians were on the path in the sea, Moses, who was directed by, God, lifted his staff over the sea again and the water came crashing down on top of
In my recent psychology class we studied parenting styles. They are grouped into three different categories; authoritarian, authoritative, and overly permissive. This gave me insight into a couple of different programs I’ve watched on television.Authoritarian parents are parents that set strict rules to keep order and they usually do this without much expression of warmth and affection. “They demand obedience to authority.” (Coon & Mitterer, 2010, p. 91) When the child questions the parent, "Because I said so," is often the response. Parents tend to focus on bad behavior, and not positive behavior, and children are scolded or punished for not after the rules. Authoritative parents help their children learn to be responsible for
Perceptions may very substantially between a parent and their children regarding parenting styles. Parents want the best for their children and often go to great lengths to support their children’s success and overall well-being. Children may however perceive tough love or authoritative parenting as negative. Factor in a multitude of other variables such as culture, socio-economics and the gap increases between what the parent and their children perceive in regards to effective parenting styles.
Thesis: The authoritative parenting style is the most effective style for producing children that have desirable traits, such as good morals, obedience, compassion and responsibility.
Psychologists have always debated the role of parenting styles and their influence on the development of children. Parenting styles can be defined as the psychological construct representing the basic strategies that parent use in raising their child (Matsumoto, Juang 2013 p.69). Parenting styles encompass two major aspects of parting those being parental responsiveness and paternal demanding. Paternal responsiveness is essentially the extent at which a parent fosters individuality, self-regulation, and self-assertion. While paternal demanding is the measure of which the parent makes the child
Supportive parenting is a term used to describe parents whose authoritative parenting style is firm, with clear and consistent limits, but with warmth, proactive teaching, interest and involvement in their child’s peer activities, as well as calm discussions while disciplining. Authoritative parents tend to be firm and set clear and consistent limits. Although strict, they are loving and supportive, and communicate to the child the rationale for their punishment, along with an explanation for why they should behave a certain way. This encourages independence in the child (Feldman, 2014).
Parenting styles in the onset of any child’s life is a huge determinate of what their future will turn out to be. Parenting styles are the normative prototypes that parents utilize to socialize and manage their children. Different parents employ different styles of discipline to ensure that their children develop to be all-rounded adults. Children who have been nurtured well by their parents turn up as self-regulated with disciplined behavior. Child discipline is thus a key parenting skill, and the choice of discipline style chosen varies from one parent to another. However, the different parenting styles produce different results and hence, some are either effective whereas some are not. This paper explores the effectiveness or lack of it, in reinforcement and punishment, corporal punishment, inductive reasoning, power assertion and withdrawal of love.
According to Alison Gopnik of the Washington Post, “to be a parent, is to be in a loving and nurturing relationship with a young child, not unlike a gardener who tends the soil in which a variety of seedlings are given the ingredients to thrive”(qtd. in ). But traditionally, when children misbehave parents often subject them to punishment. Why do parents behave in this manner when raising children? One answer is that unlike most institutions of society, the parent-child relationship seems to have remained unchanged. Today, parents still rely on methods employed their own parents, by their parents’ parents, by their grandparents’ parents. This form of parenting is called authoritarian parenting in which parents are strict implementing rigid boundaries, showing little warmth, and expecting high control (Licht, Hull & Ballantyne, 374). This restrictive form of parenting has been shown to have negative effects on the child provoking rebelliousness or antisocial aggression (Baumrind, 897). With that said, the majority of parents aren’t prepared to raise children, thus the solution to this problem is parenting training. The reason for this is that majority of the training that parents receive comes from their childhood. If one thinks about any profession, one must first undergo training to even be considered qualified. Even for the mundane task of driving a car, one requires training. In addition to learning the theory, in some states to be given a license one has to complete
