In the book, Touching Spirit Bear, written by Ben Mikaelsen, the protagonist Cole has decided to carve a totem pole after being sentenced on the island for a second time. While Cole was on the island he had been confronted by several animals, including the one that would forever change his life. This totem pole represents healing for Cole as he was learning to heal others. For this assignment the four animals that I choose to represent were an otter, spider, swan, and Bear. The first animal that corresponds to my life is an otter. The reason an otter is my first choice is because an otter is a usually playful and easygoing animal. When I was younger I use to be the same. To me, as a younger child, life was all fun and games, but since I have now matured in age I understand that not everything is always a game . Otters also have the tendency to be solitary and protective. Even though for me life was fun and games I used to like being by myself at times. I would also be very protective when it came to my friends, family, and my possessions. Now that I have grown older I now know that it is okay to be protective, but not overly protective.. …show more content…
The reason why a spider represents me is because a spider is a very artistic, independent, intuitive animal. I tend to be a very independent person, but sometimes I have to learn to accept help from other people. I also love art, another form of art I enjoy is music. Art is a huge part of my life that I really enjoy. Spiders are also very bold, I try to show boldness when it comes to whatever I have to do. Everything that I am given I always incorporate a bit of boldness to show
Section 1: An animal I think represents me, is the spider. The spider symbolizes wisdom and a hardworking nature. First, I think I am hard working because I always try to do my best at whatever I do, even if I am bad at it. Also, I work as hard as possible, and I never go for minimum. In my picture, the spider is working hard to make a web. Second, I think I am wise because I think hard about my decisions before finalizing them to avoid making irrational decisions. I also consider myself fairly intelligent, which is a major part of being wise. I showed this in my picture through the color of the spider. I made it green, which represents wisdom.
I disagree with my review because of the following reasons. When I tested I was given the animal the otter, Otters have a personality to be excitable energetic and the cheerleading type, this is not me. However, I was also given the animal the beaver and I also disagree with this because beavers are said to be organized perfectionist kind of people and this is far from who I am. Beavers are very detail-oriented, orderly and enjoy thoroughness I am more of the go with the flow type person and am far from organized. I would agree more with the idea of me being a golden retriever, golden retrievers are very team oriented, easy going and quit calm type of people. And I feel like these are some of the traits that fit me best. I tend to be very
In Chaim Potok’s novel The Chosen, specifically chapter 9, Potok was able to symbolically delineate Reuven and Danny’s lives with a reference to a spider entrapping a fly. To start off, Potok introduced the spider in the allegory as Reb Saunders. When Reuven noticed what was going on near him, he recalled seeing the spider and saying, “A spider had spun a web across the corner of the upper rail, and there was a housefly trapped in it now… the spider, a small, gray, furry-looking spider, with long, wispy legs and black eyes, move across the web toward the fly” (Potok 173-174). Reb Saunders can be seen as the spider from mainly the physical characteristics of it as well as the actions. For example, when Reuven describes the spider having “black eyes” and “gray, furry-looking”, Reb Saunders falls under all of those features.
I like to think of myself as a turtle. Turtles are able to concentrate what's happening going around you even when chaos is happening. Like when you start to daydream, I don't do that often. The turtles have emotional strength and wisdom. They have determined and persistence, just like I have the determination
“Suddenly, in that moment, Cole made a simple decision. He wanted to live.” This is one of the many effects Cole made to chance the terrible person he was. This is a quote from a book by Ben Mikaelsen called Touching Spirit Bear. At the start of this story, Cole was a mean and violent person that only cared about himself. But when he beats a kid named Peter instead of going to prison or jail, he does something done by a tribe called Tlingit. It is called Circle Justice and it is someone heals instead of being punished. When he went to the island for the first time, he burns all his resources and tries to escape, but in the end, he gets attacked by the Spirit Bear. After getting saved he had a second chance to go back and with that second chance
Animals have always been my best friends. They were there to dry my tears with their fur and give me
I’m currently a seagull, since I’m lazy, creative, and loud. I’m lazy because almost every weekend I barely move and I sleep almost the whole weekend. Not to mention I’m a pro at procrastinating, and waiting until the last second to do homework and projects. I’m creative because if you didn’t know I really like to draw and I have to be creative to do that. Lastly, I’m loud because when I’m around my friends I’m very, very loud. (teachers you wouldn’t know this.).
To fully understand spiderman as an archetype in our culture we must first understand peter parker. Peter grew up with a loving family and spent most of his time with them when they weren't on business trips. Until one day Peter's parents left him with his aunt May and uncle Ben and hurried away. Soon after Peter answers the door to man who tells him his parents have died in a terrible plane crash. Several years later Peter is still living with his Aunt and Uncle and going to highschool.
Dogs have always been a big part of my life since I've had two my grandmas has 2 and my uncles had one. My last dog Ziggy was a big part of my life, she was the sweetest dog ever and I feel she represents the love aspect of my family. Yes my family has its ups and downs, most families do, but we have such a strong love and bind that I feel was what Ziggy represented to me. So when thinking what animal to pick I knew a dog was the perfect choice and also a good way to remember Ziggy.
In world mythology, trickster, faithful companion, and animals have become frequent archetypes. When you think trickster, you think of someone who is full of mystery, they’re secretive and always playing jokes. The trickster character archetypes comes up in almost every culture. When you think of a faithful companion you think of someone that’s loyal, or that’s always there for you. The faithful companion is a character archetype that pops up in some cultures. Last but not least animals is a symbolic archetype. Animals are everywhere and in everyday life.
Another writing Assignment for the same English class was to view life as an animal. My assigned creature was a bear. I had to describe my thoughts, surroundings, and view on life. While unlike Yukinori Yanagi I did not draw an animal’s view I did write about an animal’s life.
Cole Matthews is not an uncommon young man that one would find in today’s society. Cole has not had a life I would call “easy” or “fair.” He had parents that as Cole stated, “all my parents do is drink.” (p27) His father beat him profusely. This is evidenced in the Circle Justice meetings when Cole said, “Or you’ll what?” “Beat me?” …..” “You’re still lying!” he shouted. “You’re usually too drunk to know your own name!” Cole knew these words guaranteed him a terrible beating next time he was alone…(p47-48) Cole didn’t feel he had any other emotions other than anger and fear. Many of us have had the same feelings as Cole, “He didn’t trust anyone who wasn’t afraid of him.” (p4) This is an
A meaningful life lesson in Touching Spirit Bear is that animals can teach people more about themselves. This is presented in the text on Cole’s second trip to the island when he dances around the fire. Every time he dances it is supposed to represent an animal such as a beaver or a wolf and at the end, he learns about the qualities of the animals that help them survive. For example, from the beaver, he learns that it has patience and ingenuity (Mikaelsen,222) and from the wolf; he learns that he needs to accept help and help other people (Mikaelsen,221). From this, it is clear that the animals can help people become more humane.
If I could be any animal, I would be a swan. Swans are simple, elegant creatures, but can have a powerful "punch" if messed with. Swans are great swimmers, but they also live and eat on land. During the summer, I live in the pool, but I come to eat and sleep.
The descent into the most challenging times of my life began when I was in fourth grade. Not a lot of people can say they have hit rock bottom at age nine, but I did and did not go upward for just over three years. During those years I took every chance I got to escape a house that caused me so much pain; my favorite escape was to play with an animal, whether it be one of my neighbors' or best friends'. I was able to cope during these years because interacting with animals could always lift my spirits. Years went by, things got better, and my love for animals grew. When I was fourteen I persuaded my parents to let me get a bearded dragon, who I named Sammy.
