Total governmental control is what countries have been seeking since the beginning of civilization. With the complete control over governmental affairs a totalitarian government can function to an exemplary degree of efficiency. The people are left out of the decisions and they are not to be worried about worldly affairs because the government makes all the decisions and gets objectives completed quickly and without hesitation. In George Orwell’s “1984” the dangers of a corrupted totalitarian government are illustrated through the plot of Winston Smith, the main character whom decides to challenge The Party’s power and authority after he commits a thoughtcrime. With the control of the past The Party is able to control the future by manipulating the past to encourage the governments’ goals. Therefore the government makes history correlate to justify the actions that The Party wishes to fulfill. “Who controls the past', ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past”(Orwell 37). In this quote the philosophies and motives of The Party are clearly realized and even stated by The Party themselves. As described in the slogan the government is in control now and has complete control over the past of the nation. “The perfection of the system would either be spoiled, or it would have to be enforced upon the deviant citizens” (Whittall 59). This quote explains that in this system the system both becomes corrupted and fails to uphold its duties as a governing body or it has to be enforced regardless if the people rebel against it. Unfortunately, in this novel Orwell depicts a scenario where the government is corrupted and has been enforced upon the population. With that power the government eradicates the history that points to The Party as having seized control and makes it seem as though they saved the nation from dark and horrifying times so that the people cooperate and even support the actions of government.
