As a kinesthetic learner, thinking of a leader who effectively portrays leadership through television or film was a process. Therefore, the character I chose as a popular leader in a television series is Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan from Blue Bloods. I believe his position is anything short of boring and challenges people to think on and off set. Mezirow (1991) avowed, “The domain of instrumental learning centrally involves determining cause-effect relationships and learning through task-oriented problem solving” (p. 73). Blue Bloods is an American police drama series on CBS. The series is usually located in New York City with occasional references to nearby suburbs. From the review of a critic, outside of the repeated narratives that reinforces the beliefs for viewers who see America in a certain way, specifically with how white people are a force of civilization among a barbaric mix of minorities, and that police are noble and infallible and criticisms directed their way are universally the tactic of an anti-police agenda, (Keely, 2015). Northouse (2016) wrote, “Being a leader with human skills means being sensitive to the needs and motivations of others and taking into account others’ needs in one’s decision making” (p. 44). While Frank Reagan makes the decisions for the NYC Police, his decisions also affect his family members. His family consists of an assisted district attorney, NYPD detective and police officer, and his father who is a former beat cop who rose through the ranks to Police Commissioner. The attributes that are fitting thought the show is Reagan having a son die in the line of duty and holding traditional Sunday dinner exhibits. I believe the norm of sitting down for a family dinner is something left out of today’s society, so that aspect just enhances the skills and lessons of relinquishes personal agendas to have family
Most qualities revered in people are subjective, and leadership is one of these traits. However, does not have to be a symptom of anything negative and in fact, allows for an every human being to revere a unique person if they so wanted. A few specific people have garnered much attention in the recent centuries for their works and endeavor, among them a man who is commonly said to be one of the forefathers of science fiction television. Rod Serling, the creator of the Twilight Zone, was a visionary man who turned hardships into stories that would influence those before and after death. While not the typical leader, due to him not being a political figure or leader of a country his impact on culture, specifically pop culture, cannot be brushed
There are a variety of ways to define both leader and leadership. There is not, however, a clear definition of how to become one. There is no set list of mandatory traits, either innate or learned, that a person must embody to be considered successful or proved a failure. What I feel it takes is the right mix of strengths and weaknesses in a given situation to demonstrate effectiveness. No one person has abilities without accompanying deficiencies. It’s all in the way they are balanced. The balance in the way one uses his or hers’ abilities will ultimately determine the type of leadership one has throughout time. To support these claims I will examine a well-known leader throughout the military, General James “Mad Dog” Mattis. This essay
In the book Contents of the Dead Man’s Pockets, Tom Benecke is shown to be a dynamic character. How it is shown is through his actions and feelings. Some traits that show he is a dynamic character is that he is ambitious, resourceful, remorseful, and determined. Tom is ambitious because he acted “on a sudden impulse.”(page 148) when the yellow paper flew out the window. Tom followed his instinct and did not think it through to go out on the ledge. Secondly, Tom is a resourceful character because when he was out on the ledge he used every single thing in his jacket to bring attention to himself. He shouted help, then he lights the letters on fire with the matches, after he drops coins down to see if they would land on a pedestrian. Thirdly,
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” John C. Maxwell
Mr. Reagan leadership technic was to “let people do what they do best” (Kim, 2011). He was able to identify the qualities of the persons
Leaders are look upon as role models as they guide us with their motivating, influence to accomplish tasks. There are a lot of leadership styles; when leading, it is based on the situation. When I was in the military, I encountered with many different styles of leadership. A leadership that I considered meaningful is a Transformational Leader. The transformational Leader in the military with their inspiring charisma of motivating, influence creates a visualized path that produces energetic characteristics that inhere to new changes, developments, and possibilities.; by demonstrating authority, the Transformational Leader in the military utilizes their power to inspire and motivate people into trusting and following their example; this as
Over the course of several decades, the depiction of leadership has changed. What was thought to be innovative and participative or transformational tactic to leadership has replaced the classical and autocratic or authoritarian approach. The step forward that not everything old is bad and not everything new is good was made somewhere along the way. It was determined that different leadership styles suited different situations, and it is the responsibility of each leader to figure out when to make use of an individual leadership approach or style. The two leaders selected for this assignment are Martha Stewart representing an authoritarian leadership style and William Shatner’s television character, James Tiberius Kirk from the starship Enterprise representing a transformational leadership style.
My father once told me that, “everything we do— be it in academia, at work, social or family life—we are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life.” I believe that every leader, to a certain extent, is shaped through her individual personal experience. Although in some cases, we may not realize to what extent our personal assumptions and beliefs shape our ability to lead or be led.
Edgar Allan Poe had lived a life of turmoil and tragedy, these melancholy events in his life where the biggest influences of all his works. While at a young age Poe had lost his mother and his father had left very early on, which lead to him living with John and Frances Allan in Virginia. He had a strong passion for writing, poetry more specific, but when it was time to go to college Poe was swamped with debt for his difference of what Allan paid which had made him resort to gambling. Around that time he had came home to find out that his neighbour who was also his fiancee was engaged to someone else leading Poe to leave and go off to the army which wasn't he particularly wanted to do. He soon after realised that writing was his passion and
“Leadership is more ability than job. Moreover, it is all about determination, ability to solve problems, set direction for followers, gather them for common purpose and motivating people to achieve tasks. Furthermore, it is a charisma and the ability to reacting at the right time for a particular competitive situation” (L.Mullins, 2010, P372).
In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell, Orwell shares his opinions on totalitarianism and human nature, and proves that dictatorships do not end well. In the book, Orwell introduces three pigs name Napoleon, Snowball, and Squealer. The three pigs each represent a historical figure. Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin, who was a dictator that once held power. Snowball represents a dictator that once held power named Leon Trotsky.
A study by Lechtenberg et al. (2015) points at another significant gendered difference: the components of therapy they found to be most helpful. According to Lechtenberg et al. (2015, p.98), while men and women both appreciate the use of male and female co-therapists and an emphasis on safety throughout the process, women were much more likely than men to value single-gender meetings before and after the conjoint sessions. While this may not have monumental implications, it does allow therapists to tailor their treatment, at least somewhat, around the particular aspects individuals find helpful. Men, who in general do not find these sessions particularly helpful, can be given alternative treatment.
Denis Waitley (1995) in his book, Empire of the Mind, encourages the reader to explore his/her beliefs on leadership. He asks the reader to be cognizant of how these beliefs manifest themselves in our lives, by stating, "What the mind harbors, the body manifests in some way" (p. 119). My beliefs about leadership are shaped by my experiences with my father. I have compiled a list of good leadership qualities from watching him interact with others over the years.
There are many kinds of leaders; some lead through position and authority, while others lead through inspiration and vision. Some people are simply natural born leaders. However, whether one was born a leader or has to become a leader, all great leaders spend time developing their traits. Similarly, when you train for a sport, you first learn to develop the fundamentals, and then you work to master and apply them. I’ve been told I am a born leader, but have always sought to improve my leadership abilities through experience. Maxwell states, “The learned leader; has seen leadership modeled most of life, has learned leadership through training, and has self-discipline to become a great leader” (Maxwell, 93). This statement is reflective of my experience during my military tenure, and what it means to me is; leadership must be developed in practice, as well as in theory.
"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it." Dwight D. Eisenhower This quote from Eisenhower rings true on many levels. During my career in the military and the private sector, I have been subjected to many different styles of leadership, good or bad. In my leadership roles I have attained, I tried to model leadership abilities by taking bits and pieces of previous leader’s styles and forming them into my own model. This has proven to work well as dealing with people from all different walks of life there is no one size fits all approach. In writing this paper, I will detail my own leadership platform drawing from the course material and various other sources. The goal of this paper is to show a solid understanding of the course teachings and perhaps give the reader a new found perspective on leadership.
